Player Notes
August 19, 2008
A.J. Burnett allowed a first-inning run to the Yankees on Tuesday and then proceeded to shut the door. He worked eight innings and surrendered just five hits and one run. Burnett also struck out a season-high 13 batters.

Our View:Burnett is now 3-0 against the Yankees this season. Do you think this potential free agent was wondering if Brian Cashman was watching? A.J. was rough over three August starts before this, but we guess the Yankees bring out the best in him.

The Blue Jays aren't counting on A.J. Burnett being part of their team in 2009. "It certainly looks like A.J. won’t be here," manager Cito Gaston tells the Toronto Star. "I don’t know, but we might have a few guys who can pick that slack up." Burnett says he hasn't made up his mind about opting out of the final two years of his contract. He can earn $24 million over 2009 and 2010.

Our View:Given the funny money we've seen thrown at free agent pitchers in recent years, it makes financial sense for Burnett to hit the open market. He'd really need to love Toronto to stick around.
August 12, 2008
Toronto ace A.J. Burnett is starting to look like the hot hand in Canada, getting his 15th win of the season this evening as the Blue Jays found the 6-4 win versus Detroit. Burnett pitched six innings, allowing four runs (all earned) on eight hits with one walk and six strikeouts.

Our View:Burnett allowed three homers in the game but overcame the misgivings to get the win. He now carries five consecutive wins, with seven wins over his last eight starts, or nine wins over his last eleven.
August 2, 2008
A.J. Burnett allowed four earned runs on six hits over 5.2 innings in Saturday's 6-4 win over Texas, with two walks and four strikeouts.

Our View:Burnett has extended his winning streak to three games, and has 13 for the season.
July 28, 2008
A.J. Burnett responded to his GM's confidence in him by allowing just one unearned run and six hits in seven innings. He walked four and struck out 10. The win gives him 12 on the season and matches his career high. It was the 20th time Burnett has struck out 10 or more in a game, and the fourth time this season. Asked before the game whether the Blue Jays would deal Burnett by Thursday’s trade deadline, general manager J.P. Ricciardi was emphatic. “He’s not going anywhere,” Ricciardi said.

Our View:Hopefully with all the trade talk behind him, Burnett will turn around a very average season. He now has 149 strikeouts in 146 innings and remains a good play from here out.
