Player Notes
December 11, 2008
Felipe Lopez has signed a one-year deal with the Diamondbacks worth $3.5 million, according to Sports Illustrated.

Our View:This is a solid signing to shore up Arizona's middle infield, but it remains to be seen if he is viewed as the replacement for Orlando Hudson at second base.
December 10, 2008
The Diamondbacks have made a one-year offer to Felipe Lopez, according to the Arizona Republic.

Our View:Lopez, 28, had a down-and-up 2008 season in which he was released by the Washington Nationals on July 31 yet caught on and flourished with the St. Louis Cardinals in the final two months of the season. He ended up hitting a combined .283 with a .343 on-base. He is likely seeking a longer deal than this.
December 8, 2008
It will be difficult for the Cardinals to re-sign infielder Felipe Lopez because the team has not had luck trading second baseman Adam Kennedy, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Our View:Kennedy has been asking for a trade, but the team has been unable to find any takers.
November 14, 2008
The Cardinals have made an offer to retain second baseman Felipe Lopez, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Our View:Lopez hit .384 over two months with the Cardinals last season, and could be a favorable fantasy option for 2009 if he re-signs with St. Louis and roams second base full time.
October 7, 2008
The St. Louis Cardinals are said to be interested in bringing back Felipe Lopez to be their full-time second baseman next year, according to StLCardinals.com.

Our View:Lopez was fantastic for the Cardinals after being picked up from Washington. He hit .385 in 43 games and drove home 22 runs. He won't hit at that rate for a full season, but if he can perform to a level a few notches below that and steal a few bases, he will certainly be fantasy-worthy next season.
September 28, 2008
Felipe Lopez ended his impressive stint with the Cardinals by going 4-for-5 with four RBI and three runs scored in Sunday's 11-4 victory over the Reds. He will be a free agent this offseason and has rejuvenated his career while with the Redbirds.

Our View:In 43 games with St. Louis, Lopez hit .385 with 22 RBI and 31 runs scored. Lopez, who historically has struck out at a very high rate, whiffed only 81 times in 476 at bats in 2008.
September 23, 2008
Felipe Lopez had three hits for the second straight game Tuesday. He drove in a run and scored twice in the Cards' win over Arizona.

Our View:Lopez is batting .366 in 38 games with St. Louis, as he makes a case to be brought back as a starter next season.
September 22, 2008
Felipe Lopez knocked three base hits on Monday night in five trips to the plate to lift his overall average to .268.

Our View:While that sounds rather unimpressive it should be noted that after hitting .234 in Washington, Lopez is hitting .354 in 130 AB since joining the Cardinals. After 3-straight 20-SB seasons Lopez has fallen to just seven this year, but for those who remained patient with him he has provided a nice boost in the batting average category.
September 18, 2008
In the ever-changing Cardinals lineup Felipe Lopez finds himself batting in the cleanup spot, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Hitting behind Albert Pujols, Lopez should have some RBI opportunities.

Our View:Lopez has gotten extended playing time for the Cardinals over the past few weeks at numerous positions. He has played every spot on the infield except first and has also had time in the outfield. Even with the versatility that Lopez can offer your roster he doesn't have much fantasy value.
September 11, 2008
Manager Tony LaRussa stated that Felipe Lopez is likely to cover third base while Troy Glaus recovers from his right shoulder ailment, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Olympian Brian Barden is also a candidate for the job. Brendan Ryan, Cesar Izturis and Aaron Miles have all also served time at third base before.

Our View:Lopez is riding a four-game hitting streak and his numbers have improved since leaving the Nationals. He is worth consideration in NL-only leagues if he gets the nod at third.
September 6, 2008
Felipe Lopez accounted for two RBI against the Marlins Satuurday night.

Our View:Lopez has been a different player in St. Louis. He is hitting .371 in 22 games with his new team after hitting .241 over the past two seasons with the Nationals. It seems like he is due for a slump and we would be surprised to see him finish his Cardinals' season hitting over .350.
September 4, 2008
Felipe Lopez now has an 11-game hitting streak after collecting two singles in the Cardinals loss to the Diamondbacks on Wednesday, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Our View:Lopez is hitting .377 in his time with the Cardinals, and looks like an entirely different player since leaving Washington. He could help fantasy owners down the stretch, as he also has two home runs and three stolen bases in that same period.
August 17, 2008
Felipe Lopez started for the fifth time in six games for the Cardinals on Saturday, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. He has stated at second base, left field, and shortstop.

Our View:Lopez entered Saturday hitting .360 (10-for-28) with seven runs and two stolen bases as a starter with St. Louis. He is hitting better with more motivation now while playing for a contender, and could be a sleeper in NL-only leagues down the stretch.
August 15, 2008
Felipe Lopez tripled and singled and scored two runs in the Cards' 5-3 win over Cincinnati Friday. He is batting .357 (10-for-28) since joining St. Louis.

Our View:Lopez has been playing pretty much every day and could be a sneaky MI play over the final six weeks.
August 6, 2008
The newly signed Felipe Lopez is starting in left field tonight for the Cardinals. He's hitting seventh in the batting order.

Our View:The fact that Lopez is playing the outfield in his first start seems to be proof that he'll be used a utility role and not as a starting option at shortstop or second. However, if he turns it around at the plate, that could change.
August 6, 2008
Former Nationals' infielder Felipe Lopez has been signed by the Cardinals, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. He replaces Brendan Ryan on the roster, who has been sent down to Triple-A Memphis.

Our View:Lopez is a switch-hitter and will hold some value to the Cardinals as a bench performer, but does not merit fantasy attention in mixed leagues.
August 1, 2008
Felipe Lopez was released by the the Washington Nationals after yesterday's game, according to the Washington Post.

Our View:Lopez was making $4.9 million this season, and he was hitting just .234 with a .305 OBP and .314 slugging percentage. Lopez never came close to repeating his breakout 2005 season, and at age 28, it's hard to envision him doing so now.
July 20, 2008
With more than a few of the hitters for Washington finding their names and faces on our list of headlines for today, second baseman Felipe Lopez is also deserving of credit in the Nats' 15-6 win over Atlanta. Lopez went 3-for-4 with his 18th double of the season, totaling three RBIs and three runs scored on the day.

Our View:This was Lopez's first multi-hit game since July 6th, also posting his first RBIs since July 1st. Clearly there is no need to rush him to the fantasy lineup, hitting just .238 through July.
July 4, 2008
Nationals infielder Felipe Lopez is available for trade, according to Nationals.com "We are open to any trade that will make us better long-term," general manager Jim Bowden said.

Our View:Lopez was once a highly touted prospect who many thought would turn out to be great. And for one season in 2005, he was. He stole a few bases in past years, making him a tolerable fantasy player, but this year he has been terrible, and a change of scenery isn 't likely to change that.
June 27, 2008
The Orioles are said to be interested in the Nats' Felipe Lopez, according to MLB.com.

Our View:Washington is believed to be looking for the best deal for Lopez, who has been on the bench for the previous three games. The team believes he hasn't played up to his capabilities and his future in Washington beyond this season is in doubt.
June 5, 2008
The Nationals selected right-handed pitcher Aaron Crow with the ninth overall pick in today's draft, according to We'veGotHeart.com.

Our View:He was viewed as the number two pitching prospect, and is believed to have the best fastball, which reaches 96-97 mph. He went 13-0 with a 2.35 ERA in 15 starts this season at the University of Missouri, and is a potential "ace" for the Nationals.
June 5, 2008
Felipe Lopez went 1-for-2 and generated the Nationals' only RBI in Thursday's 4-1 loss to the Cardinals.

Our View:That was only his 17th RBI of the season, and only his second over his last 18 games.
May 15, 2008
Felipe Lopez went 0-for-2 but was awarded the game's only RBI on a sacrifice in Thursday's 1-0 win over the Mets.

Our View:Lopez has now collected an RBI in three of his last four games. He has two multi-hit games over that span as well.
May 14, 2008
The Washington Nationals made the best of their six hits to pull a 5-3 win over the New York Mets. The charge was started by leadoff man 2B Felipe Lopez , going 2-for-2 with two walks, hitting his fifth double of the season to garner one RBI and one run scored.

Our View:Lopez is enjoying good returns in May, going 14-for 48, though he has yet to steal a base after swiping four in April.
April 30, 2008
Felipe Lopez, batting leadoff for the Nationals, went 2-for-5 with two RBI and a SB on Wednesday.

Our View:Lopez started at second base and he is quickly rendering Ronnie Belliard as irrelevant. Lopez may not return to his previous levels of glory, but with continued playing time he should be able to score enough runs and steal enough bases to be a very valuable player in NL Only leagues.
April 24, 2008
Felipe Lopez had two hits on Thursday including a grand slam which led to a career-high tying six RBI for the Nationals.

Our View:You would have to think he would have to go about 0-for-15 to work his way out of the starting lineup with the way he has hit of late. Ronnie Belliard owners should be very nervous and looking for other options.
April 23, 2008
Manager Manny Acta has commented that Felipe Lopez has overtaken Ronnie Belliard for the starting spot at second base for the Nationals, according to the Washington Post. Acta added, "Lopez is going to pretty much have to take himself out of it. He played himself into it with the lack of offense that we had, and he's been making things happen for us, getting on base over the last four games." Belliard was demoted due to a .214 batting average.

Our View:Lopez is hitting .275 over 51 at-bats with three stolen bases, and should play more while back at second base. His fantasy value has improved following the move.
April 19, 2008
Felipe Lopez had two hits and a run scored on Saturday night giving him five hits and three runs the past two nights.

Our View:Lopez has upped his batting average to .275, and given the fact that Ronnie Belliard is only hitting .212 in the early going, Lopez is making a real push to take over the starting job at second base.
April 19, 2008
Felipe Lopez, who has been in the lineup the past few days, will also be in the lineup again on Sunday as he attempts to recapture a starting role with the Nationals, this according to MLB.com. "It's good to be back in the lineup," Lopez said. "I think I can do a lot of things to help this team -- like I've done in the past."

Our View:Lopez stole 24 bases and scored 70 runs last season, so it's not as if he is devoid of talent. He can be a very useful bench player even in mixed leagues, especially since he has already dressed for seven games in the outfield.
April 18, 2008
Felipe Lopez had three hits, scored two runs, and stole his third base of the season on Friday for the Nationals.

Our View:Lopez will also start on Saturday for the Nats, and if he continues to cause havoc at the plate and on the bases, one would figure that he would continue to find his way into the lineup on a very consistent basis.
April 18, 2008
Felipe Lopez may not be a starter with the Nationals anymore, but he continues to pick up at-bats thanks to a positive attitude and an ability to play multiple positions, this according to MLB.com. "We're struggling offensively and he's one of those guys who could get involved and maybe make things happen for us," manager Manny Acta said.

Our View:Lopez is starting at second base on Friday, and will play shortstop on Saturday. Too bad he is hitting just .194 in the early going, but his versatility still gives him value in NL Only leagues.
April 7, 2008
Felipe Lopez played another game in the outfield on Monday night and he was able to produce two hits, an RBI, a run scored and a SB on the night. That's five games in the outfield and counting. Since most leagues use an in-season count of five or 10 games to be elgible at a new position, Lopez is about to join Mark DeRosa as two of the most valuable players in NL Only leagues because of their versatility.
April 5, 2008
Felipe Lopez appeared in his third straight game in the outfield on Saturday and he went 1-for-3 with a walk at the plate while picking up an assist in the field. Already qualifying as a shortstop and second baseman, Lopez is now charging toward adding outfield to his position tree. Lopez has a lot to prove this season after hitting only .245 last year, but he does provide a lot of speed and would become an excellent NL Only pickup given his position eligibility, that is if he doesn't get traded to the AL.
April 3, 2008
Felipe Lopez is set to make his left field debut against the Phillies on Thursday, according to MLB.com. Lopez is playing in the outfield due to injuries to Elijah Dukes and Wily Mo Pena, and Manager Manny Acta stated, "Lopez is a very good athlete. We have approached him about it. He has a great attitude. He has no problem with it. It will be good for him to get those at-bats."
March 27, 2008
Felipe Lopez hit his second home run of the spring on Thursday. He took a 1-1 Steve Trachsel offering over the right field wall. Lopez is auditioning as the team tries to peddle his services.
March 24, 2008
The Nationals are still trying to trade Felipe Lopez, this according to the Washington Post. Last week it was reported that the team was scouting ex-Royal and ROY winner, Angel Berroa, as his replacement. The Post reports that scouts and executives from other teams appear more interested in Ronnie Belliard, who is cheaper -- $3.5 million for the next two years as opposed to L¿pez's $4.9 million for 2008 -- and performing better. Belliard, who appears to have won the starting second base gig for the Nats, is hitting .383 this spring, López .231. No player is safe in Washington. General manager Jim Bowden made that clear with the outright release of John Patterson last week.
March 21, 2008
The Nationals are trying to deal Felipe Lopez and are scouting the Royals' Angel Berroa as a possible replacement, according to FOX Sports.com. The Orioles are believed to have interest in Lopez, and the Giants, Twins, White Sox and Cardinals could also use him. Lopez isn't good defensively but is a pretty decent offensive player and can run.
February 17, 2008
Felipe Lopez enters camp behind Cristian Guzman and Ronnie Belliard on the depth chart, but he could change that order this spring. "Everybody knows the talent he has, and everybody has seen what he is capable of doing," manager Manny Acta tells the Washington Post. "If Felipe shows that he's back to his old self, I'll make the best decision for our ballclub."
