Brad Penny won't pitch again this year, Grady Little told the AP Thursday. Penny finished the year 16-4 with a 3.03 ERA over a career-high 208 innings. Mark Hendrickson, Eric Stults and B.J. Houlton are considered options to start Sunday, though all three of them have worked in relief the last two days.

While that could limit him defensively, he's expected to take the mound and start Tuesday's game against the Giants.

The Dodgers aren't sure if Brad Penny will be able to make his next start. More should be known after he tosses a bullpen session on Sunday, according to the LA Times. Although Penny self-diagnosed himself with an abdominal cramp when he left Thursday's start early, trainer Stan Conte said Penny has been dealing with a strain in that area for a couple of starts. We'll have to wait and see how his Sunday session goes before considering his status for next week.

Brad Penny was forced to exit Thursday's start in the sixth inning due to an abdominal cramp. The problem came on when he ran out a single, according to the AP. There was no immediate word on the severity of the injury or how long he might be sidelined. More should be known once he's examined further on Friday.

Brad Penny, who posted a 6.25 ERA in the second half last year, admitted that a bulging disk in his back was the cause of his struggles. "I won 16 games last year, a career high," Penny told the LA Times, "but when I was struggling, people said I was overthrowing, trying to throw everything 100 miles an hour. The truth is, I was suffering from a bulging disk. I had trouble bending over, but it was easier for people to say I was overthrowing." So far this season, Penny holds a 2.33 ERA. It's still likely that we'll see him fade somewhat, but perhaps, now that he's healthy, he'll be able to avoid last season's collapse.

Brad Penny shouldn't be limited by his blistered finger in the All-Star game. Trainer Stan Conte said the index finger "looked excellent" on Sunday, according to the LA Times. At this point, it appears to be a minor ailment, so he should be ready for the second half of the season.

Brad Penny developed a water blister during Thursday's outing. It's possible he could be held out of the All-Star game as a result, according to the LA Times. "I would think he would be able to [pitch], but at the same time it's something that we'll have to monitor," Dodgers pitching coach Rick Honeycutt said. "It's a tough call because it's a great honor to make the All-Star game. I know he wants to pitch in that. But at the same time we want him to be smart and not do something that would delay him in the second half." Expect Penny and the Dodgers to make sure he's ready to go after the break, which could mean resting his finger on Tuesday.

The Dodgers got Brad Penny back in the mix for Monday's exhibition contest. It was his first game action since missing his last start due to a stiff shoulder. "It's a relief. After throwing and feeling (pain) and going out there and not feeling one thing, that's huge for me right now, especially going into the season," he told the AP. Although he felt healthy, Penny allowed three runs on four hits and five walks in four innings of work.

Brad Penny had an impressive bullpen session Friday and is on track to start Monday, according to the Dodgers official site. Penny missed his scheduled start Wednesday with discomfort near the A/C joint where the collarbone meets the shoulder.

March 22, 2007
Brad Penny missed Wednesday's game due to a stiff shoulder, according to the LA Times. He felt a twinge in the joint on Monday, but an MRI revealed no structural damage. "We're probably being overcautious, but we can afford that with the time we have," manager Grady Little said. "If it doesn't bother him in his last two starts, he should be good to go for the regular season."
