September 28, 2006 Brad Penny left his start Thursday after one inning due to stiffness in his lower back, according to the AP. Penny was replaced by in pinch hitter in the top of the second inning after allowing the Rockies to bat around in the first when they scored three runs on four hits and two walks. Dodger manager Grady Little said Penny could start Monday if they find themselves in a one-game playoff. Penny first experienced the problem in his start Saturday against the Diamondbacks. |

"His breaking ball has been on and off," manager Grady Little told the LA Times. "His fastball is always there, but the location of his fastball is not as consistent." Little said that Penny had taken the mound in his previous three starts with a stiff lower back and pitched well anyway, but that "he wouldn't pitch a pitcher who says he can't pitch."
