The Boston Herald confirms that the Red Sox have signed free agent pitcher Brad Penny to a one-year deal worth $5 million. The report says that there are numerous performance bonuses included in the contract.

Our View:Penny had a good five straight seasons prior to 2008 when injuries held him to just 94.2 inings. He had a 6.27 ERA and a 6-9 record last season with the Dodgers. A healthy season in Boston would make him a nice addition to round out your fantasy rotations.

Fox Sports reports that the Red Sox and free agent Brad Penny are nearing a one-year deal. The deal would likely allow Boston to keep Justin Masterson in the bullpen and be patient with Clay Bucholz's development.

Our View:Penny had a good five straight seasons prior to 2008 when injuries held him to just 94.2 inings. He had a 6.27 ERA and a 6-9 record last season with the Dodgers. A healthy season in Boston would make him a nice addition to round out your fantasy rotations.

Free-agent pitcher Brad Penny is getting close to making a decision on where he will pitch next season, and the Red Sox and Cardinals are two of his potential landing spots, reports Buster Olney of ESPN.com.

Our View:Penny battled through injures last season and was wholly ineffective, but he can be an asset when healthy. Think of him as a legitimate fantasy option when drafts roll around if it is determined he has his health.
December 11, 2008
The Rockies have decided not to pursue Brad Penny, according to the Denver Post.

Our View:The club was trying to add starter Tim Redding, but concerns regarding Willy Taverez's leg threw a wrench into the deal. Penny also has injury concerns, and the Rockies do not want to take a gamble on him.
November 14, 2008
Brad Penny is reportedly on the Jays' radar in case they cannot bring back AJ Burnett, according to the Globe and Mail.

Our View:The health of Penny's shoulder remains a concern for the Dodgers, which is why they declined his 2009 option. Toronto could be looking to sign him at a value price if their bid to keep Burnett is unsuccessful.
