Player Notes
March 10, 2010
Brad Penny was nearly perfect against the Nationals on Wednesday, throwing four scoreless innings with just one hit and zero walks.

Our View:Penny also struck out two. He didn't look too great in his first turn last week, so it was nice to see him bounce back right away. At 31, he's probably not quite as old as some might have guessed, and he seems to still have at least another few seasons left in the tank.

Brad Penny got bombed in his first outing of the spring on Friday, allowing six hits and three runs in just two innings of work against the Mets.

Our View:Not a good start for Mr. Penny. After his incredibly mixed 2009, his fantasy value for 2010 remains unclear. Wait-and-see what Dave Duncan can do with him this spring before making a final judgment.

Pending a Tuesday physical, Brad Penny will be a member of the St. Louis Cardinals in 2010, according to Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports.

Our View:He is expected to make a base salary of $7.5 million, and could receive as much as $9 million through incentives. Penny was dreadful as a member of the Red Sox last season, going 7-8 with a 5.61 ERA in 24 starts before turning his season around in San Francisco. After joining the Giants, he went 4-1 with a 2.59 ERA in six starts.

The Cardinals are nearing a deal for Brad Penny, according to the San Jose Mercury News' Andrew Baggarly.

Our View:Penny struggled for much of the season with the Red Sox last year but fared much better once he came back to the National League and pitched for the Giants. The Cardinals' starting rotation is a bit shaky after its two Cy Young contenders Adam Wainwright and Chris Carpenter, especially with Joel Pineiro ready to test the free agency market. Penny would take on a spot as a starter if he's indeed signed by St. Louis.
December 3, 2009
Brad Penny has turned down a one-year contract offer from the San Francisco Giants, according to MLBlogs.com.

Our View:Monetary figures were not made available, but the 31-year-old Penny is surely trying to hold out for a multi-year contract. In 30 combined starts between the Red Sox and Giants last season, he went 11-9 with a 4.88 ERA.
