Gary Matthews received most of his at-bats in the 4th and 5th slots last year, but manager Mike Scioscia plans to use the outfielder at the top of the lineup in 2008, either batting leadoff or second, according to the LA Daily News. "Obviously, Vlad will be the keystone," Scioscia said. "It will be a question of whether we are setting the table enough. Whether teams are pitching to Vlad or not, you have to create (run-scoring) opportunities. The whole lineup is contingent on how the pieces fit and whether we're setting the table enough for Vlad or we need to adjust." With the acquisition of Torii Hunter this offseason, Matthews will rotate the corner outfield positions next year.

With the acquisition of Torii Hunter, Gary Matthews will rotate the corner outfield positions in 2008 with Hunter handling the duties in center, according to the LA Times. Manager Mike Scioscia said Vladimir Guerrero and Garret Anderson will rotate through the designated hitter spot, leaving Juan Rivera and Reggie Willits without places to play.

Gary Matthews will meet with officials from Major League Baseball on Wednesday to discuss allegations that he received human growth hormone, according to the LA Times. It was reported in February that Matthews received a shipment of HGH in 2004, but he denied it. Selig has not ruled out punishments for players who used performance-enhancing substances, even though their use was not banned at the time, but we'll have to wait and see if anything comes of this.
October 2, 2007
Gary Matthews (patellar tendinitis in his left knee) has been left off the Angels roster for the ALDS. Reggie Willits is expected to be a regular for the series with Boston.
September 30, 2007
The Angels are hopeful that Gary Matthews will be healthy to play in the ALDS opener Wednesday. Matthews is dealing with a knee injury. "He's missed a lot of time the last three weeks," manager Mike Scioscia said in the AP. "We're still hopeful. There are still things he has to get out and do before he can play. He's made some progress and we'll continue to monitor it."
September 29, 2007
It does not appear that Gary Matthews will play again during the regular season. He's considered to be highly doubtful to take part in either of the final two games this weekend, according to the LA Times. The Angels want him to concentrate on getting his sore knee ready for the postseason, though his status for playoff games is uncertain at this time.
September 28, 2007
Gary Matthews, who is sidelined with a sprained right ankle, is considered questionable for the weekend, according to the LA Times. If he's not ready this weekend, the Angels are still hopeful he'll be ready by the time the playoffs begin, but there's really no telling what his status will be at that time.
September 21, 2007
Gary Matthews, out with a sprained right ankle, ran at about 95 percent on Thursday, according to the LA Times. "He feels really good," manager Mike Scioscia said. "He's close." The hope is that Matthews will be able to return to action this weekend.
September 19, 2007
Angels outfielder Gary Matthews missed his eighth straight game Wednesday because of a sprained right ankle. "Matthews is probably approaching day-to-day status," Mike Scioscia told the AP. "I don't think it's going to happen here in the next day or two, but he's certainly moved far enough along this week where you see some light at the end of the tunnel."
September 16, 2007
The swelling in Gary Matthews sprained right ankle has subsided significantly, according to the LA Times. "It's getting significantly better," he said. "Walking around in regular shoes is something I took for granted -- it's a great thing. There's a little swelling, but it's gone down a lot." There's still no timetable for his return, but he should be able to return before the end of the regular season.

Gary Matthews, who is dealing with a sprained right ankle, was initially concerned that the injury might keep him out of the playoffs, according to the LA Times. He was more optimistic on Thursday, however. "It was pretty amazing because it looked like there was a tennis ball on top of my ankle," Matthews said. "But it's gone down significantly. I'm encouraged now." Although there is no return date set, Matthews may be sidelined for the next weeks, which would mean he would have only a few games to get ready for the playoffs.
September 11, 2007
Gary Matthews left Tuesday's game with a sprained right ankle and is expected to miss at least five games. With Matthews out, it's likely Reggie Willits will go back to regular duty (both Matthews and Willits were originally in Tuesday's lineup).
August 30, 2007
Gary Matthews batted in the leadoff spot on Wednesday, according to the LA Times. He has spent most of his time this year in the middle of the order. Manager Mike Scioscia said Matthews' stay in the leadoff spot would likely be a short-term thing. However, he did note that if Kendry Morales continues to hit and force Reggie Willits to the bench, Matthews could see more time in the leadoff spot.

After being limited to DH duty for two days before taking Sunday off, Gary Matthews hopes to return to action on Tuesday. "We could limp through this, but it's going to affect his ability to play center field," manager Mike Scioscia told the LA Times. "We need him to play at a high level, so we're going to give him two days off and see how he feels Tuesday." Matthews is dealing with inflammation in the patella tendon in his left knee. Hopefully, the added rest will get him back on the field quickly.
August 12, 2007
Gary Matthews was limited to DH duty for the second straight night Saturday because of inflammation in the patella tendon in his left knee, the AP reports. The injury happened Wednesday, the result of a collision at first base with Boston's Kevin Youkilis. Matthews feels pain when he breaks out of the batter's box and when he tries to slow down. "I don't want to injure myself further, so we just want to do whatever it takes to get it under control right now and get it right so it doesn't become a lingering issue and it won't be affecting me and the team down the stretch," he said.
June 26, 2007
Gary Matthews expects to sit out the series against the Royals and hopes to return Friday in Baltimore. Matthews is dealing with a mild left hamstring strain that he suffered Saturday night, according to the LA Times. "It's a little tight," said Matthews, who was injured legging out an infield single against Pittsburgh. "We want to be careful so it's only four or five days [that I'm out] instead of four or five weeks."
June 26, 2007
Gary Matthews did not start for the second straight game on Monday because of a tight left hamstring, according to the AP. Manager Mike Scioscia said Matthews most likely will sit out Tuesday night as well.
June 23, 2007
Gary Matthews suffered an apparent hamstring injury during Saturday’s game with the Pirates. While the injury didn’t appear serious, hamstrings are a tricky beast. Fantasy owners should be prepared to not have him available next week, just in case.
June 6, 2007
Switch-hitting Gary Matthews is batting .213 right-handed and .321 left-handed, the AP reports. Last season he hit .313 against righties and .314 against lefties. "I take the same amount of swings from each side every day and continue to work hard on that (right) side," Matthews said. "It's just a matter of getting reps and seeing more lefties. I just don't see a lot of them, and sometimes your average suffers because of it."
May 6, 2007
Angels manager Mike Scioscia plans to give Gary Matthews a routine day off Sunday, according to the LA Times. He's played every inning thus far, so a little rest should help him over the long haul.

March 14, 2007
Under pressure from Angels owner Arte Moreno to speak out about recent steroid allegations, Gary Matthews has denied ever using HGH, according to Sports Network. "I have never taken HGH -- during the 2004 season or any other time," said Matthews. "Nobody has accused me of doing so, and no law enforcement authority has said I am a target of any investigation for doing so." Matthews could face a 60-80 game suspension even without a failed drug test for "possession or use of any prohibited substance."
March 7, 2007
Even without failing a drug test, Gary Matthews could face a 60-80 game suspension, according to the LA Times. That's the penalty Major League Baseball's drug policy hands down following a first conviction for "possession or use of any prohibited substance." If he ends up charged and convicted for possession or use of HGH, he could face such a penalty, though it appears the clause wouldn't be triggered if he were to receive immunity for testifying in a possible trial.
March 6, 2007
Lawyers advising the Angels have indicated that the team probably would not have grounds to void Gary Matthews' contract even if prosecutors can prove he received an illegal shipment of human growth hormone, according to the LA Times. Investigators recently found documents linking Matthews to a 2004 shipment of HGH.
February 28, 2007
Gary Matthews' name has been mentioned in an illegal steroid distribution network that led authorities to raid two Orlando pharmacies and arrest four company officials, according to the AP. Albany County (N.Y.) District Attorney P. David Soares didn't identify any steroid recipients, but the Times Union of Albany reported that Matthews was one of the customers. "I do expect it to resolve itself here in the near future. ... Until we get more information, I just can't comment on it," Matthews said.
