The Padres have requested waivers on Vinny Castilla with the intention of giving the veteran his unconditional release. Castilla, who was acquired in the offseason from the Nationals, is hitting just .232 on the season. Mark Bellhorn will likely get the majority of playing time at third base now for the Pads. The team recalled Mike Thompson from Triple-A Portland to take Castilla's place on the roster.

Vinny Castilla was out of the lineup for the Padres on Saturday. According to the AP, Castilla began losing his vision on Friday night and then had a migraine so bad that he was taken to the hospital for an MRI. Castilla spoke to reporters before Saturday's game, and his status is day-to-day.
