The Cardinals confirmed that Rick Ankiel would not appear in a Grapefruit League game and is all but certain to open the season on the disabled list due to a strained patellar tendon suffered late last month, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. "The prognosis about when he could play without rupturing it is really uncertain," said Tony La Russa. "We don't want to push him where he ruptures it. If he has surgery, he's out for the year. He's in really a tough spot. He can't jump and he can't run." Once Ankiel is ready to come off the DL, he must stay on the big-league roster or else pass through waivers before he can be moved to the minors.

Rick Ankiel will miss 10-14 days of spring training after injuring his left knee, according to the AP. He suffered the injury during an intrasquad game on Monday. "Yesterday he felt a little twinge in his knee," assistant team physician Robert Shivley said. "It was pretty well localized to the bottom end of his kneecap, in the patellar tendon. We're going to reevaluate him in 10 days, two weeks, and hopefully he'll be ready to go by then."
