Player Notes
September 5, 2008
Ted Lilly lasted just two innings on Friday night against the Reds. He was tagged for five runs on four hits and three walks.

Our View:It was Lilly's shortest outing of the year and could not have come at a worse time for a Cubs' pitching staff that is dealing with an ailing Carlos Zambrano and Rich Harden.
August 25, 2008
Cubs lefty Ted Lilly led the Cubs to a 12-3 win over Pittsburgh by going seven innings, surrendering three runs on seven hits and striking out seven. The win was his 13th of the year.

Our View:Lilly is 3-1 in August and has struck out 22 batters in his last 20 innings pitched.
August 20, 2008
Ted Lilly threw a strong game, going seven innings and allowing just two earned runs on two base hits while striking out seven, but he picked up his seventh loss of the year in the Cubs 2-1 loss to the Reds.

Our View:Lilly has not given up more than four earned runs in a game since April, and he has pitched very well in August. In his four starts on the month, he has given up two earned runs or less in three of them. He should certainly be a guy to utilize in fantasy leagues.
August 8, 2008
Ted Lilly pitched 7.1 strong innings against the Cardinals on Friday permitting two runs on the afternoon.

Our View:Lilly only struck out four on the day, but that still pushes his total up to 133 which just so happens to be the ninth best total in the National League.
August 2, 2008
Cubs hurler Ted Lilly won his eleventh decision of the season as the Cubs beat the Pirates 5-1. Lilly went 6.1 innings, allowing one run on six hits while striking out five.

Our View:After a great June, Lilly had an average July, but has started out August well. With the amount of wins and strikeouts he has, Lilly can be of some use to fantasy teams.
July 24, 2008
Ted Lilly held the D’backs to three runs over six innings in yet another quality start for the Cubs as he picked up his 10th victory of the season. Lilly lasted six innings and permitted six hits, three walks and struck out six.

Our View:Lilly is one of the better strikeout artists, he has 120 in 128.1 innings, but he still owns a middling 4.49 ERA and 1.34 WHIP which marks him as a useful part of a staff, but not a difference maker.
July 18, 2008
Ted Lilly did not get a decision, but he pitched very well for Chicago in their loss to Houston. Lilly went seven innings, allowing only a solo home run to Carlos Lee and striking out six batters.

Our View:After a horrendous performance his last time out, Lilly re-established himself here. He has nine wins and racks up a good amount of strikeouts, and has gotten better every month of the season, so he is a useful fantasy hurler.
July 10, 2008
Ted Lilly fell to 9-6 on Thursday as he was lit up for six hits, two walks and four runs in just 2.2 innings against the Reds.

Our View:Lilly needed 63 pitches to get all of eight outs on this day. Lilly is a nice source of victories and strikeouts, but his ERA and WHIP will likely settle in at just better than the NL average as last years performance (3.83 ERA, 1.14 WHIP) is likely as good as it's gonna get for this lefty.
July 5, 2008
Ted Lilly picked up a no-decision against the Cards but he still pitched well allowing two runs over six innings. St. Louis managed seven hits and one walk off Lilly, but he also picked up five strikeouts.

Our View:Lilly continue to bring the type of production that he is famous for. His ratios are manageable (4.47 ERA, 1.30 WHIP)is win total solid (nine), and his strikeout totals are formidable (8.39 K/9) giving him solid but unspectacular value.
June 25, 2008
Ted Lilly wasn't at his best on Wednesday but he kept the Cubs in the ballgame and was rewarded with his eighth win of the year. Lilly only allowed seven baserunners in seven innings, but he allowed two home runs which led to four runs scored.

Our View:Lilly has now won three straight games and this was the first time in five appearances that he permitted more than three runners to cross the plate. This is about as good as it gets with Lilly, but he is still a solid option in a rotation.
June 20, 2008
Ted Lilly hurled a "quality start" on Friday in a no-decision against the White Sox. Lilly lasted 6.2 innings during which time he permitted three runs on seven hits and three walks while he struck out eight batters.

Our View:Lilly has now struck out 30 batters over his last four starts (26.2 IP) during which time his ERA is 2.70. His overall numbers still aren't great, but he has certainly turned around a poor start of late.
June 15, 2008
Ted Lilly threw six shutout innings allowing one hit, walking five and striking out six to help the Cubs to a 7-4 win over the Toronto Blue Jays on Sunday afternoon.

Our View:Lilly struggled with his command, but with the assistance of the big strike zone of home plate umpire Jeff Nelson he was able to strand runners in nearly every inning and record his seventh win.
June 10, 2008
Chicago LHP Ted Lilly picked up his sixth win of the season as the Cubs put the 10-5 whooping on the Braves. Lilly went 6 2/3 innings to allow three runs (all earned) on four hits with three walks and eight strikeouts.

Our View:In two June starts, Lilly has surrendered five combined walks versus 16 strikeouts, touting his best ERA to date (3.21 for June).
June 4, 2008
Chicago LHP Ted Lilly put an outstanding performance on the mound this evening, but the end result was his fifth loss of the season as the Cubs fell 2-1 to the Padres. Lilly pitched 7 1/3 innings, allowing just two runs (both earned) on seven hits with two walks and eight strikeouts.

Our View:Lilly has been pitching rather well, going 4-0 through May and putting an outing on the hill that should have garnered the win in his first start in June.
May 30, 2008
Ted Lilly was rocked for seven runs (four earned) on eight hits over a mere three innings against the Rockies on Friday, and was dealt a no decision as the Cubs won 10-9.

Our View:He allowed two home runs in the game, and has now given up 12 over 12 starts. His ERA also climbed to 5.54 following today's outing.
May 25, 2008
Chicago LHP Ted Lilly struggled through a disappointing day on the mound as the Cubs took the heartbreaking 6-5 loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates. Lilly pitched six innings, giving up four runs (all earned) on 10 hits, also surrendering two walks balanced with two strikeouts.

Our View:More than anything, the three home runs allowed put a damper on Lilly's day on the mound. He has surrendered six homer through five starts this month, but he walked away today with no decision and stays at 4-0 on the month.
May 19, 2008
Ted Lilly picked up six strikeouts over 5.1 innings to earn his fifth victory of the season. Lilly walked two, allowed four hits and gave up two runs on the night.

Our View:Lilly used the elements to his advantage early in the game, the sun was a huge ally in the early going, and he hung around long enough to pick up the victory on this night, the fifth time in six starts that he has allowed three or fewer runs.
May 14, 2008
The Cubs used offense to get the win over San Diego, 8-5, this evening, but the work of LHP Ted Lilly was not without merit. Lilly pitched six innings, giving up four runs (all earned) on six hits with just one walk and 11 strikeouts on the night.

Our View:Lilly entered May at 1-4 with 6.46 ERA. His ERA isn't going much lower, but he has three wins in a row to get his record to 4-4.
May 9, 2008
Ted Lilly surrendered a first-inning solo homer to Arizona's Chris Young, then gave up just two hits over the next six innings in a Friday day game at Wrigley. The left-hander allowed one run on three hits, walked two and struck out 10.

Our View:Lilly has continue to show improvement after a slow start, and today's effort following a underachieving road trip for Chicago, was just in time. Lilly earned his third victory of the season.
May 3, 2008
Ted Lilly earned his second win of the season on Saturday, as the Cubs topped the Cardinals 9-3. Lilly allowed three runs on six hits (two homers) over seven innings, with one walk and four strikeouts.

Our View:Lilly is now 2-4 with a 5.97 ERA over 37.2 innings, with 29 strikeouts. That was a solid outing for him against the Cardinals, but he still ranks as a marginal fantasy performer. He held a poor 1.50 WHIP heading into today's contest.
April 27, 2008
Ted Lilly, who was making his 200th career start, gave up two runs on four hits in six innings but lacked the run support to gain his second straight victory.

Our View:After second inning hits by the Nationals Wily Mo Pena and Wil Nieves Lilly and the Cubs relievers held Washington to only one hit the rest of the game. Nick Johnson started the second-inning rally with a leadoff single. Lastings Milledge moved Johnson to second with a sacrifice, and Pena brought him in two batters later with a two-out single to left.
April 22, 2008
Ted Lilly finally shaped up. After four rough starts that resulted in a 9.16 ERA, Lilly held the Mets to one run over six innings on Tuesday. The southpaw allowed four hits, walked four, and struck out four. He is now 1-3.

Our View:We could do without the four free passes, but we can't be too picky at this point. Lilly was a solid fantasy hurler in 2007, and we hope this outing gets him back on track.
April 22, 2008
Ted Lilly will be looking for his first win of the season today when he takes the hill against the Mets, according to MLB.com. He is currently 0-3 with a 9.16 ERA, and has allowed five earned runs in each of his last three starts. He did fare well in his lone start against the Mets in 2007 however, as he only allowed two runs over 7.2 innings, with no walks and eight strikeouts in a win.

Our View:He will duel with righty Nelson Figueroa, who is 1-0 with a 3.60 ERA. He was having issues with his velocity, and we will monitor his performance in that area today.
April 16, 2008
Ted Lilly is experiencing a "mysterious" drop in velocity on his pitches, according to The Chicago Sun-Times. He is not injured or hurting, and the team has not sent him out for even a precautionary medical test. Lilly said, "It's frustrating. You don't understand it, but guys go through it all the time. A lot of pitchers win without velocity. I'm not going to use that as an excuse." He is still scheduled to pitch on Thursday.

Our View:He is off to a 0-2 start with a 9.95 ERA over 12.2 innings, and hopefully he can get himself on track.
April 12, 2008
Ted Lilly struggled again on Saturday night as he allowed seven hits (two HR), two walks and five runs in just 4.1 innings in his second loss of the season.

Our View:Lilly seems completely lost on the hill as he has now failed to pitch even five innings in any of his three starts. Lilly didn't figure to be able to better last years numbers, but if he doesn't turn things around pretty quickly, he may not even have the chance to match them.
April 7, 2008
Ted Lilly was awful on Monday as he allowed five runs and nine baserunners in just 3.2 innings before being removed from a game the Cubs came back to win. That's two ugly outings in a row for Lilly who has thrown only 8.1 innings with a 9.72 ERA. A lot will have to go right for Lilly to approach the career best numbers he posted last season, and if this start is any indicator it looks like a regression is coming down the pipe for Lilly.
March 23, 2008
Ted Lilly had a rough outing against the White Sox on Saturday as he surrendered four runs on seven hits over six innings, with two walks and three strikeouts. His ERA sits at 6.00, but his spot in the starting rotation is safe.
