Freddy Garcia left Thursday's start after two innings due to shoulder discomfort, according to Meridiano Deportes.

Our View:Garcia had pitched pretty decently prior to the injury and it is unclear at this point how severe it is. He is currently a free agent.
November 26, 2008
Freddy Garcia held a solid 1.13 WHIP over 15 innings (three starts) with the Tigers last season, but the Cardinals are not interested, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Our View:The Cardinals have been known to add "scrap heap" pitchers, but the club is not interested in Garcia as they already have to deal with Chris Carpenter, who is a question mark for 2009 while rehabbing.
November 23, 2008
The Mets have Freddy Garcia on their radar, and have checked in on him, according to NYBaseballDigest.com.

Our View:The Mets could likely sign him for a favorable salary, making him a cheap option to fill their fifth spot in the rotation. He fared well with Detroit in 2008 with a solid 1.13 WHIP over 15 innings (three starts).
November 11, 2008
Freddy Garcia felt some tightness in his neck and shoulder in his final start with the Tigers, but he is feeling better and is expected to begin pitching in the Venezuelan winter league soon, according to Yahoo! Sports' Tim Brown.

Our View:Garcia pitched respectably for the Tigers in September and will get a chance to start for someone in '09.
October 30, 2008
Tigers pitcher Freddy Garcia pitched in three games for the Tigers on 2008 and now he has filed for free-agency, according to Tigers.com.

Our View:In Garcia's short stint as a Tiger he had an ERA of 4.20. It will be interesting to see what the market for the pitcher will be.
October 10, 2008
Tigers pitcher Freddy Garcia left his last start of the season due to shoulder stiffness, but he will attempt to get things worked out and pitch in winter ball in Venezuela in anticipation of next season, according to Tigers.com.

Our View:Garcia will gradually work up his pitch count in order to be fully ready for spring training. He will be a free agent next year unless the Tigers sign him before the end of the World Series - which is not going to happen.
September 29, 2008
The AP reports that Freddy Garcia was forced to leave Monday’s makeup game against the Chicago White Sox in the sixth inning because of a stiff right shoulder. He allowed just two hits into the sixth inning.

Our View:No word on how serious the injury is but Garcia should be expected to be ready to go by spring training.
September 25, 2008
The AP reports that if the Tigers have to go to Chicago on Monday to make up a rainout against the White Sox, they would start former Chicago pitcher Freddy Garcia. The game would be played only if needed to decide the AL Central race between Minnesota and Chicago.

Our View:Garcia has made two starts, lasting five innings in each appearance. He is 1-1 with a 4.50 ERA. He played for the White Sox when they won the World Series earlier in the decade.
September 23, 2008
Freddy Garcia surrendered five runs in five innings while striking out six in the Tigers 5-0 loss to the Kansas City Royals.

Our View:Garcia gave up three home runs, and saw his record go to 1-1, as he builds up his resume for next season.
September 19, 2008
Freddy Garcia is hinting that he would like to remain with the Tigers beyond this season, according to the Detroit Free Press. He said, "I like the guys here. I like the manager and pitching coach and staff. They want to win. They will win at some point."

Our View:Manager Jim Leyland was very pleased, and admittedly shocked, with his first start as he hurled five scoreless innings against Texas. The 33-year-old could get his wish to stay in Detroit if he remains solid in his next outing.
September 17, 2008
Freddy Garcia pitched five innings to win in his first game since June 2007. He allowed an unearned run and two hits while striking out three, walking one and throwing only 59 pitches. The Tigers offense provided plenty of run support as they wallopped the Rangers 17-4.

Our View:It was as good a return as anyone had hoped for. Monitor his starts the rest of the way as the 33-year-old could be a factor in 2009.
September 9, 2008
Freddy Garcia will start for the Tigers when they travel to Texas and face the Rangers next Wednesday (Sept. 17), MLB.com reports. He hasn't pitched in the majors since June 8, 2007 due to shoulder surgery.

Our View:Garcia has pitched well in his minor league work, but we're not expecting much when he moves up to the majors. He'll be a free agent this winter, and the Tigers may look to re-sign him if he shows decent stuff over the final two weeks.
September 9, 2008
Freddy Garcia threw between 75 and 80 pitches in a simulated game Monday, according to MLive.com. Manager Jim Leyland noted that GM Dave Dombrowski will determine if Garcia is ready to pitch in a regular game. Garcia's fastball was in the 85-87 mph range, which is where it was when he went 17-9 for the 2006 White Sox. He had rotator cuff and labrum surgery on his right shoulder one year ago, and when asked how he feels now compared to 2006, he responded, "Better and stronger. It's my fourth time pitching and I can go 80 pitches. If I have to go slow, I will go slow. If I don't pitch, I don't pitch. But it would be nice if I pitched. If not, I will just keep working."

Our View:Garcia could join the Tigers' rotation by the end of the season, but will only merit fantasy consideration in deeper AL-only leagues.
September 3, 2008
Freddy Garcia threw 52 pitches in a simulated game Tuesday at Comerica Park, according to the Detroit News. Garcia threw in the mid-80's and manager Jim Leyland said, "Freddy was about exactly as I expected. He's way ahead of schedule for what he had done to him. If we're going out there expecting to see him throw 90, we're wasting our time. That's not going to happen. But he went 4-0 against us two years ago throwing 85. This guy knows what he's doing. The good thing is that I saw no restrictions with his arm."

Our View:Garcia is scheduled for another simulated game Monday, and could join the Tigers' rotation at some point before the end of the regular season, barring a setback.
August 29, 2008
Freddy Garcia threw for the Tigers Triple-A Toledo team, and hurled three shutout innings, striking out four along the way, according to the Detroit Free-Press. 25 of his 32 pitches went for strikes.

Our View:Garcia could make his way to the big leagues soon, as the Tigers have a hole in their rotation that needs filling. It's difficult to recommend him for fantasy teams right now, but monitor his progress.
August 28, 2008
If Freddy Garcia is going to pitch in the major leagues this year with the Tigers, tonight could go a long way. Garcia will start for the Toledo Mud Hens, the Tigers' Triple-A club. The Detroit Free Press reports that manager Jimmy Leyland will travel to watch Garcia in person.

Our View:Garcia is trying to come back from a shoulder injury that has sidelined him for over a year. The Tigers are still having internal discussions on whether to bring back Garcia up to the big leagues.
August 24, 2008
Freddy Garcia's road back to the big leagues began Saturday night with two scoreless innings for Class A Lakeland in the Tigers farm system, according to MLB.com. Garcia scattered three singles with a walk and a strikeout in his start for the Flying Tigers on Saturday at Dunedin. All three hits came in his second inning of work, including a bunt single, but he escaped with help from a double play.

Our View:Garcia, a 117-game winner over nine years in the big leagues, signed a Minor League contract with the Tigers a week and a half ago to try to get in some innings before the season ends, possibly in the Majors in September. The deal came with no guarantee that would happen, but the Tigers decided to take a look at him with a chance that he could be in their pitching picture for 2009 if he's healthy.
August 12, 2008
Freddy Garcia signed with the Tigers today, this according to SI.com. Garcia has not pitched since June of 2007 when he was with the Philadelphia Phillies, and has had his share of injuries. Where he fits into the Tigers rotation has yet to be determined.

Our View:It's obvious that the Tigers have not yet given up on the season. While Garcia wasn't considered one of the top-tiered free agent options -- he came cheap -- and has a reputation as a big game pitcher.
August 9, 2008
A day after auditioning for about 15 major league clubs in Florida, pitcher Freddy Garcia hopes to make a decision "quickly" on where he will be pitching for the rest of this season, his agent said Wednesday, according to ESPN.com.

Our View:Agent Peter Greenberg told ESPN.com's Jerry Crasnick that Garcia would prefer to sign a contract for the rest of 2008, show that he's fully recovered from shoulder surgery, then go on the open market as a free agent in November. Ideally, Garcia would like to pick his destination by the end of the weekend. Garcia, 33, pitched only 58 innings for the Phillies in 2007 before going down with season-ending shoulder surgery. Now that his rehab is almost complete, he's likely to be a popular target for teams that need pitching help and were unable to fill their needs by the trade deadline. The Red Sox, Yankees, Rays, Tigers, Rangers, Mets, Phillies, Astros, Brewers, Cubs, Rockies and Dodgers sent scouts to watch Garcia's workout at the University of Miami on Tuesday. It's believed that representatives from Florida and the White Sox were also on hand for his open audition.
August 8, 2008
The Houston Astros are interested in possibly signing Freddy Garcia but they aren't quite ready to offer him a contract, according to MLB.com.

Our View:Garcia came up as part of the Astros organization before he was traded in the Randy Johnson deal 10 years ago. He has spent about a year rehabbing his shoulder, and though he believes he could add something this season, he likely won't be able to make a difference until next season.
August 7, 2008
The Phillies are not interested in re-signing Freddy Garcia after watching him work out in front of several teams earlier in the week, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer. Assistant GM Ruben Amaro Jr. said, "He's got a ways to go. For us, I don't think we believe that he's a guy that could help us this year. He threw OK. The feeling is that he's going to come back, but he probably couldn't help us in September."

Our View:Amaro's comments are not encouraging, and Garcia should not be counted on to make a solid impact as a fantasy hurler when he joins a club later this season.
August 5, 2008
Free agent pitcher Freddy Garcia will toss two simulated innings for scouts on Tuesday, the New York Daily News reports. He is nearly one full year removed from surgery to repair a torn labrum in his right shoulder. Roughly a dozen teams are expected to check out the performance.

Our View:At the best, Garcia would be signed quickly and make it to the majors in September. Fantasy owners shouldn't count on him to make a quick rise and be able to help their squads in a significant way.
July 31, 2008
Teams that are unable to acquire a starter at the deadline might decide to look at free agent Freddy Garcia, who is working his way back from a torn labrum, according to ESPN's Buster Olney. Garcia will likely throw for scouts on August 18-19 with the hope of signing on with a team that wants help over the final month. Garcia's agent, Peter Greenberg, said of the pitcher: "He's excited about where he's at."

Our View:We doubt Garcia can come back and be a big help to someone over the final month, but some team will probably take a chance on him.
July 19, 2008
Ozzie Guillen spent some time with free agent Freddy Garcia over the All-Star break. According to MLB.com, he does not expect him back anytime soon. "When I saw him and where he's at right now, I don't see that happening. I don't think by August, maybe September. Freddy hasn't even thrown off the mound yet. He's throwing flat and he's throwing good and he said his velocity is coming around."

Our View:Hopefully Garcia does not rush back. The once effective pitcher carried a 5.90 ERA thru 11 starts last season.
July 17, 2008
Freddy Garcia is hoping to audition for teams before the end of July, according to Newsday. He is trying to make a comeback from surgery on his right labrum, and agent Peter Greenberg said, "We're hoping to showcase him, if possible, by the end of July. We think he's going to help somebody in the majors this year, September and October." Greenberg also stated Garcia is likely to sign for just this season, then go on the free-agent market.

Our View:The teams interested are the Mets, Yankees, Astros, Rangers, Royals, Phillies, Red Sox, Tigers, and White Sox.
July 15, 2008
There are reportedly (at least) nine teams interested in free agent hurler Freddy Garcia, according to the NY Post. The teams interested are the Mets, Yankees, Astros, Rangers, Royals, Phillies, Red Sox, Tigers, and White Sox.

Our View:Garcia will begin throwing breaking balls off the mound this week in Miami, and as long as he avoids setbacks the plan is to schedule a showcase for teams to judge his abilities.
July 3, 2008
MLB.com reports that Freddy Garcia is expected to be 100 percent healthy in two weeks and will pitch a showcase session for interested teams, most likely between July 20-24. The Astros, Cardinals, Dodgers, Rays, Red Sox, Tigers, Twins and Yankees are among the teams that are expected to monitor Garcia's session. He would wait until signing with a team before deciding on a timetable for when he would make his first Major League appearance since June 8 of last year.

Our View:Garcia was very ineffective in his 11 starts last season (1-5, 5.90 ERA), but did win a combined 31 games in the two seasons prior to that. Garcia won't make a fantasy impact until the stretch run, if he makes one at all.
June 27, 2008
Free agent pitcher Freddy Garcia is now on the Astros' radar, according to MLB.com. Team GM Ed Wade said, "I talked to his agent, Peter Greenberg, earlier in the week, and he informed me that Freddy is expected to be ready to throw in front of scouts soon. I let him know that we want to be there."

Our View:Garcia notably came up through the Houston organization before the Astros traded him to Seattle on July 31, 1998, along with Carlos Guillen and John Halama, for ace pitcher Randy Johnson. Garcia has landed on the Astros' radar following Shawn Chacon's release from the club.
June 22, 2008
With Jeremy Bonderman nursing injury and Dontrelle Willis providing far more questions than answers, the Tigers are reportedly seeking the services of RHP Freddy Garcia , according to the East Valley Tribune.

Our View:Garcia has struggled with the Phillies, going 1-5 in 17 starts last season before underging shoulder surgery last season, but his past performance in the AL Central has the Tigers ready to gamble on his potential. Besides, the team is getting desperate for arms and Garcia can't hurt an already-concerning situation.
June 19, 2008
Freddy Garcia is on the radar of the Tigers (as previously reported), White Sox, Indians, Mets, Yankees, Red Sox, and Rays, according to Fox Sports.

Our View:Three of those teams are in the AL Central. Garcia is trying to make a comeback from shoulder surgery and could throw for teams in early July. He has a good relationship with Chicago skipper Ozzie Guillen, but is also friends with Detroit's Carlos Guillen.
June 17, 2008
Freddy Garcia is believed to be on the Tigers' radar, according to the Detroit Free Press. The Tigers have reportedly contacted the free agent hurler's rep, and have stated that they want to add veteran talent to their roster in the middle of this season. Garcia is recovering from shoulder surgery, and hasn't pitched in the majors since last June.

Our View:The Tigers' rotation will be without Jeremy Bonderman and Dontrelle Willis for an indefinite length of time. Garcia has looked strong while throwing from a mound, and is said to be ready to return to the majors around the All-Star break.
May 17, 2008
Right-handed hurler Freddy Garcia will be on the radar of the Red Sox, Braves, Yankees, Mets, White Sox, Rangers, and Mariners when the free agent is ready to audition, according to MetsBlog.com.

Our View:He is already throwing from a mound and looking strong, and should be ready to return to the majors around the All-Star break. He is recovering from shoulder surgery.
February 27, 2008
Freddy Garcia is in Red Sox camp, though the Boston Herald is reporting that he is simply being evaluated and no deal is imminent. Garcia, who's coming back from shoulder surgery, doesn't seem like a fit for the Sox at all, especially since he won't pitch until the second half.
February 20, 2008
Freddy Garcia did pay a visit to the Mets' spring training camp Wednesday, but he won't be donning a Mets uniform this year. "He's close with Johan and Pedro, and he just wanted to say hello," GM Omar Minaya said in the NY Post. "We're not interested in him." Garcia is recovering from shoulder surgery and isn't expected back until the second half.
February 20, 2008
Free-agent pitcher Freddy Garcia was spotted in Port St. Lucie on Wednesday morning according to SI.com. The trip to Florida was to visit with the New York Mets player personnel. The Mets haven't commented on contract talks -- notes the report, but they have long been interested in Garcia.
