Player Notes
September 26, 2008
Francisco Cordero is done for the year and he will have surgery on his right foot to remove a bone spur, according to The Star Tribune.

Our View:Cordero ends his first season in Cincinnati with 34 saves, a 3.33 ERA and 78 K in 70.1 innings. Cordero wasn't spectacular this season but he did close the year on a nice run with 14-straight save conversions.
September 8, 2008
Francisco Cordero recorded his 28th save Monday night. Tossing a perfect ninth inning against the Brewers.

Our View:Cordero has not blown a save in a month and continues to lower his ERA (3.41) as the season progresses.
September 4, 2008
Francisco Cordero recorded his 27th save today with a scoreless ninth inning in the Reds 8-6 win over the Pirates.

Our View:Cordero has not blown a save since July 21st and continues to lower his ERA each and every appearance. Though he doesn't get as many opportunities as the top of the line closers, he usually closes the door when he gets a chance.
August 28, 2008
Francisco Cordero has returned to the Reds Wednesday after missing Tuesday's game to be with his newborn son, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer.

Our View:The Reds' closer can now be penciled back into lineups.
August 26, 2008
Francisco Cordero was unavailable for Tuesday's game, as he was with his newborn son, according to the AP. He is expected to rejoin the team Wednesday.

Our View:Perhaps Cordero could have gotten a save chance tonight had he been there, but Bronson Arroyo went ahead and completed the game.
August 25, 2008
Francisco Cordero left the team before Sunday's game to attend to an undisclosed personal matter, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer.

Our View:Manager Dusty Baker did not indicate whether he thinks he will be back for Tuesday's game at Houston. The Reds are off today. We will keep you posted on his status.
August 8, 2008
Francisco Cordero suffered a meltdown on Friday night as he allowed the Astros to beat him for four runs as he fell to 4-4 on the season.

Our View:This marked the third time in nine appearances that Cordero has been scored on, not a terrible number until you realize that he has allowed 11 runs in that time, a span covering just 7.1 innings (13.51 ERA). He Will hold on to the closers role, but this has been a brutal two weeks to watch.
July 21, 2008
Francisco Cordero blew his sixth save of the season on Monday. He served up two hits and three runs over 0.2 innings against the Padres. Cordero hurt his own cause by walking three batters. The closer has allowed seven runs in 3.0 innings since the All-Star break.

Our View:We're mildly worried at this point. Cordero has built up too much favor for us to panic after two bad outings. The walks are out of character, though.
July 17, 2008
Francisco Cordero had his worst outing of the season on Thursday against the never-say-never Mets. He managed just one out among six hits and four earned runs.

Our View:This was just Cordero's second loss but it was his fifth blown save. Needless to say, he just didn't have much tonight.
July 6, 2008
Francisco Cordero nearly blew his second save in as many days thanks in part to a Joey Votto error. After retring the first two batters in the ninth, the next four batters reached base, scoring two runs in the process. Cordero sturck out Wilson Nieves to record his 18th save.

Our View:Cordero's seen a lot of work lately. This was his fourth appearance in four games and his sixth over the last seven days. It's likely the hiccups are a result of over use. Owners need not panic. Just be happy the Reds are staying in so many games at this point in the season.
July 5, 2008
Francisco Cordero blew his fourth save of the year on Saturday, but his offense bailed him out leading to his fourth victory of the year.

Our View:Cordero has two saves and a win this week giving him a tone of value for those using him in head to head matchups. He should continue to serve as a top-10 closer the rest of the year.
July 3, 2008
Francisco Cordero pitched a perfect ninth inning for his 16th save in 19 opportunities helping the Reds to a 5-3 win over the Washington Nationals on Thursday night.

Our View:The save was the closers first since June 25.
June 30, 2008
Francisco Cordero escaped a bases-loaded jam in the ninth inning on Monday night, helping the Reds move a percentage point ahead of the Pirates with a 4-3 win in relief of starter Aaron Harang.

Our View:Cordero allowed two walks and struck out one earning his third win of the year.
June 12, 2008
Francisco Cordero returned to the Reds on Thursday after being unavailable the past two days because of the flu, according to MLB.com. "One guy out of the equation changes the whole bullpen," manager Dusty Baker said. "One guy is one-seventh of your bullpen."

Our View:Cordero has been solid all year and should continue to be so the rest of year given his overpowering stuff.
May 5, 2008
Francisco Cordero walked Ryan Theriot to load the bases in the bottom of the ninth inning, but was able to retire Derrek Lee to remain perfect in five save chances this season in a 5-3 win over the Cubs.

Our View:Cordero has been quiet this season, primarily because the Reds haven't given him many ninth inning opportunities.
April 28, 2008
Francisco Cordero, whose save opportunities have been limited this April, allowed a hit in the ninth inning but recorded his fourth save in four chances.

Our View:Cordero, who left Milwaukee to join the Reds during the offseason, has 12 strikeouts in 11 innings, he's walked six and sports an attractive 1.64 ERA.
April 10, 2008
Francisco Cordero nailed down his second save in a 4-1 win over the Brewers on Thursday, as he hurled a hitless ninth inning, with one strikeout. He remains a solid and under-rated fantasy closer.
April 5, 2008
Francisco Cordero picked up the win on Saturday by throwing a clean ninth inning against the Phillies. Cordero now has a victory and a save in his first three outings, and though other relievers received a lot more love this preseason, Cordero has a chance to be a top-5 closer this season as Dusty Baker likes to lean hard on his end of the game hurler.
April 3, 2008
Francisco Cordero earned his first save on Thursday, in a close 3-2 win over Arizona, as he held the team hitless with one stikeout. His season is off to a solid start.
March 31, 2008
Francisco Cordero made his Reds debut on Monday in a non-save situation. The hard-throwing right-hander hurled a scoreless ninth inning, allowing one hit and striking out one.
