Vernon Wells, recovering from shoulder surgery, can start some light weight training, gently swinging a bat and running in three weeks. He's currently nine weeks into his recovery. "There's still a little bit of pain in there," Wells told the Toronto Sun. "There's still some healing that has to go on but it's looking good right now." Barring any setbacks, Wells says he expects to be 100 percent for spring training.

Toronto is shutting Vernon Wells down for the remainder of the year, and he'll have surgery on his ailing shoulder next week, the Blue Jays official site reports. Wells has played through shoulder discomfort for the entire season and didn't want to disclose it; the news came out in late August. The injury is not considered a long-term problem and Wells is expected to be healthy for spring training.

Vernon Wells was held out of the starting lineup Thursday, though he played the final inning in the outfield. "He's struggling right now," manager John Gibbons told the AP. Vernon Wells will undergo surgery on his left shoulder once the season is over, according to the Toronto Sun. "The doctors say it's a fairly simple procedure," he said. "Obviously shoulders are difficult and we have to be careful. I kind of hurt it last year and as I've continued to play, it's just gotten a bit worse. There's pain, discomfort at different times. You feel it and try to change things a bit so it doesn't hurt as much. It's been more frustrating than anything." Wells has been a disappointment this season, hitting just .249 with 16 homers and 79 RBI, and it's likely that this shoulder injury has affected his production at least somewhat. It'll be interesting to see how he's valued in drafts next season.

Vernon Wells has spent the entire season battling shoulder issues that began last year, general manager J.P. Ricciardi told MLB.com. "It's not so much an injury – there's just a little tightness in there," Ricciardi said. Whatever he wants to call the ailment, it appears Wells’ shoulder is the culprit for his disappointing season. Hopefully the problem will be fixed in the offseason and Wells is a bounce back player in 2008.

"I ended up making some changes around the time the lineup was changed, so I think it's a combination of a lot of things," Wells told the team's official site. "I've just been trying to work out the kinks, and it's all seemed to work out so far in the leadoff spot."
