If Mike Lowell (hip surgery) proves to be healthy in spring training, he could potentially be dealt by the Red Sox if they land Mark Teixeira, according to the Boston Globe.

Our View:The team would move Kevin Youkilis to third base with Teixeira playing his natural position at first base. Lowell has solid power and defensive skills and could garner interest from the Indians, Dodgers, Angels, and Twins.
November 15, 2008
Mike Lowell is making favorable progress in his recovery from hip surgery, according to the Boston Globe. Surgeon Brian Kelly, who performed Lowell's operation, said, "I think there's a good chance he'll be the same. The pro athletes that I've dealt with that have this type of surgery are typically able to get back to their full level of function without losing much. If there is some degree of permanent damage, is that damage going to become progressively worse? It probably has more to do with longevity of one's career. Will he come back like he was? That's what we all want to know. I'm optimistic."

Our View:Standard recovery time is 4-6 months, and Lowell is already off crutches. He has a shot to be ready for spring training.
October 23, 2008
The Boston Red Sox are interested in signing free agent first baseman Mark Teixeira and would probably trade Mike Lowell to create room for him, according to the Boston Globe. Potential suitors for Lowell include the White Sox, Indians, Twins, Angels, Brewers, Reds, Dodgers, and Giants.

Our View:Trading Lowell would mean that Kevin Youkilis would go over to third base with Teixeira taking over at first base.
October 22, 2008
Mike Lowell's injured right hip had much less damage than previously expected, according to the Boston Herald. Red Sox general manager Theo Epstein said that the surgery was a "complete success."

Our View:Lowell's body is acting older than 34 years old right now, but the successful surgery is definitely a good sign. The Red Sox struggled at times on offense with him out against the Rays in the ALCS. Lowell is signed through 2010, a deal that he signed after being named World Series MVP at the end of last season.
October 20, 2008
Updating an earlier report, Mike Lowell underwent surgery on his ailing right hip, according to the AP.

Our View:Red Sox spokesman John Blake said Lowell was awake after his surgery Monday. He noted that Lowell wanted to undergo the surgery now to have sufficient time to recover before spring training. The arthroscopic procedure repaired a tear in his hip and fixed a bone spur.
October 20, 2008
Mike Lowell remains on schedule to undergo surgery on his hip today in New York, according to the Boston Globe.

Our View:Barring a setback, Lowell should be ready for opening day 2009.
October 14, 2008
Mike Lowell will have surgery on his ailing hip on Monday, according to the Boston Globe.

Our View:Clearly, his season is over with but he should be ready to go before opening day. The Red Sox will continue to use Kevin Youkilis at third base and Mark Kotsay at first.
October 12, 2008
Mike Lowell is likely done for the remainder of the postseason due to his ailing hip, according to the Boston Globe.

Our View:Indications are that off-season surgery should get him back to his normal self in 2009.
October 7, 2008
Even if the Red Sox advance to the World Series, they will likely be without third baseman Mike Lowell, according to the Boston Globe.

Our View:Lowell will need surgery in the offseason to fix his injured hip. He tried to make it through the ALDS, but was in far too much pain to continue.
October 6, 2008
Mike Lowell has been removed from the ALDS roster due to complications with his injured hip, according to The Providence Journal. He has been replaced on the roster by infielder Gil Velazquez.

Our View:Lowell won't be eligible to return until the World Series, if the Sox can make it that far. Given his struggles of late, even if the team makes it to the Fall Classic, we wouldn't be counting on much from one of the teams most important RBI bats.
October 6, 2008
Updating an earlier report, Mike Lowell will not be in the Red Sox lineup in Game 4 on Monday because of his injured hip, according to the Associated Press. "We’ll get him looked at," manager Terry Francona said. "We have some decisions to make. Maybe one decision is to do nothing. Some of it is going to depend on what the doctors say what we needed to do with him."

Our View:The Red Sox may have no choice but to shut Lowell down if they move on in the playoffs as it's tough to waste a roster spot on a guy if he is limited to just pinch hitting. Kevin Youkilis will continue to play at third with Mark Kotsay filling in at first.
October 6, 2008
Mike Lowell could barely walk as he came into the clubhouse after Game 3, according to the Boston Globe. He had difficulty putting on his pants and when asked if he would play in Game 4, he answered, "I don't know. We'll see Monday."

Our View:Lowell has looked sluggish while roaming third base, and has also looked overmatched at the plate.
October 5, 2008
Mike Lowell (hip) will be in the starting lineup for the Red Sox for Game 3 of their ALDS matchup with the Angels, according to the Seattle Post Intelligencer.

Our View:Lowell has been bothered, especially in the field, by his ailing hip. Reports are that he feels good so he will return to the lineup to see if his body is strong enough to allow him to contribute.
October 4, 2008
Mike Lowell was held out of Game 2 due to his ailing hip, but manager Terry Francona indicated that he will return to the lineup in Game 3, according to the Boston Globe.

Our View:Boston holds a 2-0 lead over the Angels, and Lowell will be in action when they try to close out the best-of-five series Sunday at Fenway Park.
October 3, 2008
The Boston Globe has confirmed what many saw coming - Mike Lowell will not be in Friday's starting lineup for Game 2 of the ALDS due to his injured hip. Mark Kotsay will replace him at first base.

Our View:Lowell is one of the more dependable hitters on the Red Sox and he may be called upon to pinch-hit in the game. His hip does bother him when he runs, but not as much when swinging the bat.
October 3, 2008
Boston third baseman Mike Lowell might not be able to play Game 2, as he was clearly in pain during Game 1, according to the Boston Globe. "It's not just like a nagging hamstring he's dealing with, so again, I'll continue to think. I really don't know quite what we're going to do," said manager Terry Francona.

Our View:Lowell is dealing with an injured hip, and is still in a lot of pain. Francona will not make his decision until later in the day.
October 1, 2008
Mike Lowell is projected to start at third base in Game 1 against the Angels, according to the Boston Globe. While the Globe projects him to start, manager Terry Francona remains uncertain and said, "We just don't know yet. I thought Mikey Lowell looked pretty good. I thought it was very encouraging the way he moved around. The movement he did do didn't grab at him. That was very encouraging."

Our View:Lowell was a driving force during Boston's World Series run last season, but the 34-year-old failed to stay healthy this season, and it remains to be seen if he can make an impact in their bid to win a third title in five years.
September 30, 2008
Mike Lowell (hip) took fielding practice on Tuesday afternoon and looked to moving without discomfort, according to the Hartford Courant.

Our View:Lowell hasn't been troubled hitting, it has been the fielding that has held him back. Even with the way he looked tonight, he is still not certain to be named to the playoff roster.
September 29, 2008
The Boston Globe reports that third baseman Mike Lowell took batting practice on Monday but was unable to take grounders at Fenway. "Hitting is not really the problem," manager Terry Francona said of Lowell. "In fact, I think he said that's really the easy part. It's some of the lateral movement and I don't know if it's start or stopping -- somewhat stopping, change of direction, things like that while he's rotating -- but he did have a pretty good day."

Our View:Lowell is dealing with a painful hip injury and should not be counted upon for the NLDS. He was one of the more consistent threats for the Red Sox this season but was only able to participate in 113 games.
September 25, 2008
Though Boston third baseman Mike Lowell has seen his right hip improve, he may not be able to play in any of the team's final games in preparation for the playoffs, according to the Boston Globe. "For the sake of getting him four or five at-bats, I would hate to hurt him on Saturday or Sunday and lose him for the playoffs," said manager Terry Francona.

Our View:Fantasy owners who haven't ditched Lowell from their rosters already should do so and pick up someone else in the season's final few games.
September 23, 2008
Red Sox third baseman Mike Lowell will take batting practice on Tuesday and then work on his fielding Wednesday as he continues to rehab his right hip, according to the Boston Globe.

Our View:There is not an exact date for Lowell's return as of yet, but it is possible that he will return before the end of the season.
September 23, 2008
Mike Lowell's sore right hip is improving, according to the Boston Globe. Manager Terry Francona said, "Lowell's hip improved yesterday, but not to the point where he's going to play in a game. I don't know if it's rapid improvement, but it's improvement. We'll just keep monitoring him and do the best we can."

Our View:Lowell can run straight ahead with little trouble, but moving side-to-side aggravates the slight tear in the labrum of his right hip. Francona hoped Lowell would be ready to return as early as Wednesday, but that no longer seems possible. He shall remain on the bench in fantasy leagues.
September 19, 2008
Mike Lowell will take the weekend off according to the Boston Herald. He has been dealing with an ailing hip. He’s been assured he does risk further damage to the hip but he is taking new medication and the training staff want the hip to cool down before he resumes playing baseball.

Our View:Lowell hopes to play next week but nothing is certain at this point. Kevin Youkilis will continue to see time at third base in his absence and Sean Casey will likely make more starts at first base.
September 18, 2008
Not much has changed on the injury front for Mike Lowell but he did say on Thursday that he felt a slight improvement from a day ago, according to the Boston Globe. Lowell hoped to play in the series opener against the Blue Jays but it is still not known if that will be the case.

Our View:With the Red Sox most likely in the playoffs as either the division winner or wild card, they will probably take it slow with Lowell to make sure he is ready for postseason play. With fewer at-bats Lowell will probably see his production lower.
September 17, 2008
As expected, Mike Lowell will not be in the starting lineup on Wednesday against the Rays according to the Boston Globe. The third baseman is dealing with a torn labrum in his hip that will eventually require surgery.

Our View:If Boston wasn't in sucha heated race, they would probably shut Lowell down. As it stands, he will likely see spot duty from here until the end of the season. Expect his production to take a hit as a result.
September 17, 2008
Boston is expected to be without third baseman Mike Lowell for tonight's game versus Tampa Bay at the Trop. Lowell left Tuesday's game with a sore hip and will be unavailable for a few games while he heals.

Our View:The Sox will also be without outfielder Jason Bay who is with his pregnant wife.
September 16, 2008
Mike Lowell showed obvious discomfort in his hip on Tuesday night according to the Boston Globe. Earlier in the day it was announced that he is playing with a torn labrum in his right hip, and he will probably need to undergo surgery after the season

Our View:Hopefully, Lowell won't have to be shut down, but the Sox may have to consider it if the condition worsens or if he becomes physically limited.
September 16, 2008
Red Sox third baseman Mike Lowell is playing with a torn labrum in his right hip, and he will probably need to undergo surgery after the season, according to the Boston Globe.

Our View:Lowell, who has been dealing with this since late June, got an injection to try and quell the pain, and says he will simply play through it. Fantasy owners should take note, however, that his average since the All-Star break is just over .220, so finding an alternative the last couple weeks of the season may be wise.
September 13, 2008
Mike Lowell has been experiencing pain in his hip, according to the Boston Globe. "I said, 'Help me out here. We've got four games in about 30-something hours,' " manager Terry Francona said. "So, we kind of walked through the possibilities. Because he is a little sore, he's got some things we need to be cognizant of."

Our View:Lowell was activated from the DL last week following a strained oblique. The oblique is fine, but now he has the hip to deal with. We're betting it won't keep him out of the lineup, though.
September 8, 2008
Mike Lowell had a scheduled day off Sunday and was not out of the lineup due to an injury or setback related to his strained oblique, according to the Boston Herald.

Our View:Lowell has been hot since returning as he is 5-for-9 with one homer and four RBI. He should be active in lineups this week.
September 5, 2008
Mike Lowell came off the disabled list to go 3-for-5 with a homer and four RBIs, helping Boston beat the Texas Rangers 8-1 on Friday night. He had been suffering from a strained oblique muscle. He homered in his first at-bat since Aug. 12. The third baseman added a two-run single in the fourth and an RBI double in the ninth.

Our View:Lowell, like so many other Red Sox players, seems to get hot at the right times and look for him to havea good September. If he was dropped in your league because of his injury, hurry up and grab him.
September 5, 2008
Mike Lowell is making his first appearance since August 12th on Friday against the Rangers. He had been out with a strained oblique.

Our View:If Lowell was dropped in your league because of his injury, he is a good pickup for September. He is penciled in to hit sixth for the Sox which should give him plenty of RBI opportunities.
September 3, 2008
The Boston Globe indicates that Mike Lowell remains on target in his recovery from a strained right oblique, and should return this weekend against the Rangers.

Our View:He won't require a rehab game to get ready, and fantasy owners should be able to pencil him back into lineups for the new week. There is urgency in Boston to get him back, as the club needs to maintain their lead in the AL wildcard race.
September 1, 2008
Updating an earlier story, Mike Lowell took batting practice for the first time on Monday since suffering his left oblique injury and he sounded optimistic that he will be able to return shortly, according to MLB.com.

Our View:Lowell is targeting the Red Sox series with the Rangers this weekend for a return, though he will likely need to have a couple of solid batting practice sessions to make his return this weekend a reality.
September 1, 2008
Red Sox third baseman Mike Lowell will likely take batting practice on Monday as he continues his rehab from an oblique strain, according to the Boston Globe.

Our View:No firm date on when Lowell will return, but it should not be too long. He has provided fantasy owners with 14 home runs and 67 RBI in 101 games this season.
August 29, 2008
Boston third baseman Mike Lowell hit balls off a tee and wants to resume playing soon, according to the Boston Globe.

Our View:Lowell is suffering from an oblique strain, but has progressed to the point that he was complaining about wanting to play. The Red Sox prefer to take it slow so he doesn't re-aggravate the malady.
August 26, 2008
Mike Lowell seems to be progressing in his recovery from an oblique injury. He'll begin hitting off a tee tomorrow, according to the Boston Herald.

Our View:Lowell is still at least a week away, but it sounds like his owners should have him for pretty much all of September.
August 25, 2008
Mike Lowell is scheduled to speak with medical director Dr. Thomas Gill today to get approval to head to New York, according to the Boston Globe. He is on the DL with a strained right oblique.

Our View:The Red Sox start a three-game series with the Yankees on Tuesday. We will keep you posted on his status.
August 18, 2008
Mike Lowell has returned home to Miami to continue his rehab, according to the Providence Journal. He will be at home for four days and conduct two-a-day workouts with his personal trainer. "He wanted to go and we have no problem," said manager Terry Francona. "We know what he's going to do." Lowell is coming back from a strained oblique.

Our View:It will be a while before Lowell is ready to return to the lineup. We'll keep you posted on his progress.
August 13, 2008
Mike Lowell has landed on the 15-day DL due to his strained right oblique, according to the Boston Globe. David Pauley has been recalled from Triple-A Pawtucket to fill his spot on the roster.

Our View:Kevin Youkilis should see time at third base with Sean Casey covering first. Oblique injuries can linger and are known to be slow to heal, meaning Lowell may be out of action for more than 15 days.
August 13, 2008
Updating an earlier note, Mike Lowell is likely headed for the DL due to his strained right oblique, according to the Boston Herald. Oblique injuries could be slow to heal, and he was already dealing with a sore right hip. He said, "It’s frustrating because I’ve never had this happen before. I’d like to avoid the DL, but the doc said it’s a possibility. I think right now it’s probably too early. Today after the MRI, they’ll have a lot more information."

Our View:If Lowell lands on the DL, Kevin Youkilis could move over to third base, with Sean Casey covering first.
August 13, 2008
Mike Lowell strained his right oblique during an at-bat on Tuesday, according to the Boston Globe. He said, "I took those two swings my last at-bat, the first one I felt like a little grab on my side, the second one I felt something a lot more significant. The last pitch I kind of panicked, I didn't know what to do. I didn't think I could swing. I was kind of hoping he'd just flop a curveball or something. I've never had this happen to me before. It's just frustrating."

Our View:He is hoping the injury is not too severe, and will have an MRI Wednesday. Lowell could barely stand after Tuesday's game.
August 5, 2008
Mike Lowell is back in the lineup on Tuesday night, one day after receiving a cortisone shot in his right hip. "They said the anti-inflammatory part would feel good within the first 24 hours and then, whatever the medicine is, might take three or four days," Lowell informs MLB.com. "Getting out of bed, my abs didn't hurt, so I've got to believe that's a good sign. I haven't jogged or anything, but moving around feels a little better. I'm hoping that's a step in the right direction."

Our View:It sounds like Lowell will need to deal with some pain for the remainder of the season. The injury popped up in late June/early July, and he hit only .215 with one homer last month. That's not a very good sign for his continuing fantasy value.
August 5, 2008
With the Red Sox in Kansas City Monday night, Mike Lowell was back in Boston receiving a cortisone shot in his right hip flexor, according to the Boston Globe.

Our View:Lowell also got a cortisone shot shortly before the All-Star break and started the first 15 games of the second half before Monday night.
August 4, 2008
Mike Lowell is expected to sit out Monday's game to rest his strained right hip, according to the Boston Globe. He struggled to get to second after his fourth-inning blast to the left-center-field gap against Oakland Sunday, and he is expected to receive a shot, cortisone or some other pain reliever to aid his ailment.

Our View:Adjust your lineups accordingly. He has hits if four straight games, but hasn't homered since the Fourth of July.
August 2, 2008
Mike Lowell is in Boston's lineup Saturday after being forced out of Friday's game with a strained hip, according to the Providence Journal.

Our View:Lowell hasn't been hitting well since the All-Star break, but fantasy owners should be pleased his hip ailment appears to be minor.
August 1, 2008
Mike Lowell was removed from the Red Sox game with the A's in the 10th inning after legging out a ball with an apparent leg injury.

Our View:No report is yet available from the team, but Lowell appeared to grab at his right groin after crossing first base. He left the field under his own power. More details to follow.
July 4, 2008
Mike Lowell helped lead the Red Sox to a 6-4 win on Friday against the rival Yankees in the Bronx, as he went 2-for-4 with four RBI. He hit a double and a three-run homer.

Our View:He has 53 RBI for the season, with six coming over his last two battles against New York.
June 28, 2008
Mike Lowell hit a solo home run off Houston closer Jose Valverde in the ninth, but Jason Varitek struck out to end the Red Sox threat. The Boston third baseman went 4-for-4 in the losing effort raising his average from .285 to .297.

Our View:Lowell, who had a horrible April, has come on strong in hitting his 12th home run over the last two months.
June 13, 2008
A thunder and lightning storm is threatening tonight's contest against the Red Sox and Reds at the Great American Ballpark, according to the Providence Journal. There is also heavy rain, and the forecast calls for storms throughout the night.

Our View:This is Boston's only trip to Cincinnati for this year, so it remains to be seen how the game would be made up if postponed. Saturday's game will be at 4 o'clock because it is scheduled to telecast by FOX-TV, which makes a day-night doubleheader possibility a problem for that day. On Sunday, the Sox and Reds could play a day-nighter on getaway day. The team's could also find a day that they are both off to make up the game.
June 1, 2008
Mike Lowell hit his seventh home run of the season and the Boston Red Sox defeated the Baltimore Orioles 9-4 on Sunday.

Our View:Lowell, who was homerless with no RBI in April, hit six home runs and drove in 22 runs in May. Today's long ball is a solid start to hopefully another productive month.
May 22, 2008
Mike Lowell slugged a grand slam for the Red Sox to help propel them to an 11-8 victory over the Royals. Lowell also had two other hits on the day and three runs scored.

Our View:Lowell is the perfect example of the idea of regression to the mean. Through his first 15 games he did not have a single RBI, but over his last 17 games he has knocked in 19 runs. You can only keep a good man down for so long. Are you listening Andruw Jones?
May 17, 2008
Mike Lowell hit a two-run homer and doubled in a pair of runs, and the Boston Red Sox beat the Milwaukee Brewers 7-6 on Saturday and complete a sweep of their day-night doubleheader.

Our View:Lowell has been on fire since suffering an early season slump and injury. The third baseman now has five home runs and 15 RBI in May.
May 16, 2008
Friday's game between the Red Sox and Brewers has been postponed due to rain, according to the AP.

Our View:It was rescheduled as the second game of a day-night doubleheader on Saturday.
May 7, 2008
Mike Lowell had his second big game in three nights with a home run, three hits and three RBI against the Tigers.

Our View:Lowell has finally found his stroke after dealing with injury for most of the early season. Lowell still figures to be a top-15 third basemen this year if he can stay on the field, so keep that in mind if his name comes up in trade talks.
May 5, 2008
Mike Lowell hit his first home run and drove in his first runs of the 2008 season on Monday night. In a 6-3 win over the Tigers, Lowell started the Boston scoring with a two run shot of Jeremy Bonderman in the top half of the second inning.

Our View:Lowell had gone 54 at-bats without an RBI. In his defense, the third baseman had been playing hurt for most of April.
May 5, 2008
Mike Lowell is yet to register an RBI (or a homer) over 54 at-bats this season, according to MLB.com. He recently returned from the DL due to his thumb ailment.

Our View:Lowell was projected by many to be a bust for 2008 after recording 21 homers and 120 RBI last season, and he is wearing that collar well so far.
May 1, 2008
Mike Lowell went 1-for-4 on Thursday night and he continues to work on his stroke after missing time due to a sore left thumb.

Our View:Lowell is just 2-for-11 without a single run produced in three games since returning to the lineup. With Sean Casey on the DL and Kevin Youkilis back at first base, Lowell will need to pick things up to help the offense from third base.
April 29, 2008
Mike Lowell has been activated from the DL (sprained left thumb) and is going to return to his post at third base tonight against Toronto, according to the Boston Globe. The team designated pitcher Bryan Corey for assignment to make room on the roster for Lowell.

Our View:Lowell was only 6-for-30 with no homers or RBI before getting hurt, and you should pencil him back into your lineups with caution for his first game or two back in action.
April 28, 2008
Mike Lowell is likely to return from the DL on Tuesday, according to the Boston Herald. He was recovering from a sprained left thumb and commented, "I don’t have any pain. Overall, I feel pretty good. I passed the tests they wanted me to pass. I’m looking forward to getting back."

Our View:It is good news that he is returning, but he was only 6-for-30 with no homers or RBI before getting hurt, and you should pencil him back into your lineups with caution for his first game or two back in action.
April 27, 2008
Red Sox 3B Mike Lowell is progressing towards return as he works with Triple-A Pawtucket, according to the Providence Journal. Lowell served as the team's DH in his first game with the minor-league affiliate, the first of a scheduled 20-day rehab assignment as Lowell works to return from a sprained left thumb, and went 1-for-5 at the plate.

Our View:It may have been just one hit, but that hit contributed two runs to a 6-1 victory over the Syracuse Chiefs. "I was actually happy about recognizing pitches," said Lowell. "I saw a lot of different pitches. Squared up a couple of balls, so that was good. Overall, I don't think there's anything negative, so I think that's good." Lowell sprained his thumb while making a diving stop on April 9th against the Detroit Tigers, and while the Sox are bringing him along cautiously, Lowell feels he is progressing and should be on track for his scheduled return in early May.
April 26, 2008
Mike Lowell went 1-for-4 in his second rehab game for Triple-A Pawtucket on Saturday. He could come off the DL on Tuesday.

Our View:Lowell owners should feel safe activating him for the week ahead.
April 25, 2008
Mike Lowell is to begin a three-game rehab assignment for Triple-A Pawtuckett today, according to the Boston Herald.

Our View:Lowell could be back in Boston next week, barring any setbacks. We will continue to update his status.
April 22, 2008
Mike Lowell took batting practice on Tuesday and didn't have much problem with his sprained left thumb. "He looked great," manager Terry Francona tells MLB.com. "I was waiting to have him kind of nurse the bat through the zone. He looked great. Again, how he responds to that is important." If all goes well, Lowell could begin minor league rehab work by this weekend.

Our View:Lowell could be back with the Sox in about a week, provided he doesn't have any setbacks. We'll continue to update his progress.
April 21, 2008
Mike Lowell is expected to take batting practice on Tuesday, his first such action since spraining his left thumb on April 9. The club doesn't know if he'll be ready to be activated by Friday, though. "If I'm healthy, I don't see why I wouldn't," Lowell tells MLB.com. "If I'm pain-free, I'm hoping. We'll see. It's a work in progress."

Our View:Fantasy owners can generally plan on getting Lowell back into their lineups next week. We'll continue to update his progress.
April 19, 2008
Mike Lowell continues to progress well without any setbacks with his injured thumb, this according to MLB.com. "Barring setbacks -- and we're still kind of early into this -- we might be getting into a place where maybe we're a week away from him playing in a game," Red Sox manager Terry Francona said. "At least we're looking at some timetables."

Our View:Lowell has been limited to swinging off a tee, but at least it sounds like things are progressing to the point where it's realistic to think that he could return to action by the start of May.
April 18, 2008
Mike Lowell is apparently headed in the right direction as he recovers from a sprained left thumb, but he is not expected to be ready by April 25, the Boston Globe reports.

Our View:With Lowell out, Sean Casey has become a near-regular in the lineup. AL-only fantasy players can safely use Casey until we have more news about Lowell's potential return.
April 10, 2008
Mike Lowell has been placed on the 15-day DL with a sprained left thumb, according to the Providence Journal. Jed Lowrie has been recalled from Pawtucket. The report noted that Lowell walked into the clubhouse with a removable cast on his right arm. He injured the thumb in the first inning of Wednesday's game against the Tigers.
April 9, 2008
Boston’s Mike Lowell has exited tonight’s matchup with the Detroit Tigers after suffering an unknown injury to his left hand, according to MLB.com. The Sox believe it is a sprained left thumb and initial X-rays were negative for fracture. Sean Casey has entered in relief of Lowell and the team will revisit his condition tomorrow.
March 26, 2008
Mike Lowell went 2-for-4 against Oakland during action in Japan. Lowell hit .324 in 2007 and is off to a solid start.
March 20, 2008
Mike Lowell had a tough day at the plate against Toronto on Wednesday as he struck out in all three at-bats, dropping his spring average to .237. Lowell should get on track by Opening Day and notably hit .324 with 21 homers in 2007.
March 19, 2008
The dispute between the Red Sox and MLB about staff stipends for the two-game trip to Japan may be over, MLB.com reports. The Red Sox players have begun warming up for Wednesday's spring game against the Blue Jays.

The Red Sox plan to boycott the Blue Jays game on Thursday and skip the scheduled trip to Japan if their coaches and other staff aren't properly compensated. "It's not just the coaches, it's the staff, the trainers, a lot of people are affected by this," Mike Lowell tells the Boston Globe. "I'm so super proud of this team. When we put it to a vote it was unanimous, we're all in agreement that we're not going to put up with this." The coaches assumed they were going to receive a $40,000 stipend from the league for making the two-game trip, but that is not currently the case.
