Player Notes
March 15, 2010
David Ortiz went 2-for-2 with a two-run homer off Brad Bergesen in today's 8-4 loss to Baltimore. His other hit was a single.

Our View:That marked Big Papi's first homer of spring training, but still carries a dismal .143 batting average. He will be looking for a strong season, namely as Boston holds a $12.5MM club option on him for 2011.
March 14, 2010
David Ortiz has yet to comment on his contract situation this spring, according to ESPN.

Our View:The Red Sox hold a $12.5 million team option on Big Papi for the 2011 season, but thus far have shown no inclination to exercise it or extend Ortiz. Unless his 2010 is dramatically better than his 2009, he can count on neither happening.
March 3, 2010
David Ortiz went 1-for-3 with a two run homer in Wednesday's exhibition game against Northeastern University.

Our View:Ortiz clearly has a spot on the Sox this season, but we thought it was notable that he went deep early in the spring. Perhaps it's the confidence boost he needs to stay away from another season where he doesn't hit his first home run until May 20th.
March 3, 2010
David Ortiz has told WEEI that he wants to play three or four more big league seasons.

Our View:He seems to think the "enthusiasm" he plays the game with will ensure he sticks around. Unless he enthusiastically hits 30-to-35 bombs this season, expect the Red Sox to decline his $12.5 million 2011 contract option.
February 23, 2010
The pressure is on a "slightly trimmer" David Ortiz this season, according to the Boston Globe.

Our View:Of course, this is an obvious statement, but after four straight years of declining numbers, it cannot be avoided. If not for his $12.5 million contract for this season, he almost certainly would no longer be in Boston, and his chances of being a fantasy success are small. While he still may bang 20 home runs in 2010, it's unlikely he will do much of anything else, making him a risky pick in the earlier rounds of most mixed drafts. You might need the power, but you certainly won't need the .220 average.
