Sean Casey has signed on with the MLB Network making his retirement official, according to WEEI.

Our View:Casey was a solid major league player, finishing his career with a .302 batting average and appearing in three all-star games. He played the majority of his 12-year career with the Reds, but also spent time with the Pirates, Tigers, and Red Sox over the past three seasons. His best year was 1999, when he batted .332 with 25 home runs and 99 RBI that season, all of which were career highs. He put up similar numbers in 2004, with a .324 batting mark, 24 home runs, and 99 RBI but had a severe drop off the next year and never regained his power stroke after that season.

According to Hal McCoy of the Dayton Daily News, first baseman Sean Casey is likely to retire.

Our View:Casey was a long-time Red, hence McCoy's perceived knowledge of the situation. He did well in a part-time role with Boston last season, hitting .322, but he has no power whatsoever, and failed to hit a single home run last season.

With Mike Lowell dealing with hip issues, Sean Casey will see some more starts from here until the end of the season. He is in the starting lineup on Wednesday according to the Boston Globe.

Our View:Casey is hitting .343 in 175 at bats this season. In a exceptional Red Sox lineup, a line drive hitter like Casey can rack up solid fantasy points.
September 5, 2008
Sean Casey was activated from the 15-day DL on Friday according to the Providence Journal. However, despite first baseman Kevin Youkilis' unavailability, Casey is not starting. He will be available to pinch hit. He was on the disabled list due to a bad neck.

Our View:If Youkilis' injury (back) is serious, Casey would be the likely choice to start at first base. He is hitting .345 in 59 games this season. Mark Kotsay has started at the position recently.
September 4, 2008
Sean Casey's neck ailment is improving, and he may be able to return to the Red Sox on Friday, according to the Boston Globe.

Our View:Casey has been taking fielding and batting practice, and if there are no setbacks, he'll be ready soon. Fantasy owners will not get a whole lot out of him, however, as in 165 at-bats, he has no home runs and just 12 RBI, despite his .345 average.
