Player Notes
August 2, 2008
Matt Clement has been released by the Cardinals, according to the AP. He has not pitched in the major leagues since 2006, when he underwent right shoulder surgery.

Our View:He will now have to continue his comeback bid with another team.
July 8, 2008
Matt Clement cleared waivers Monday morning, and the Cardinals immediately optioned him to Triple-A Memphis, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Our View:The former All-Star (2005) will continue his prolonged attempt to return to the majors as a reliever. He has not allowed a run in four relief innings for Memphis.
July 1, 2008
Matt Clement pitched well in a relief role for Triple-A Memphis, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. He walked one batter and struck out two in one inning.

Our View:Clement has not shown enough to warrant a job in the Cardinals starting rotation, so he will have to make due as a reliever. There is no timetable for his return to the big leagues, and even if he does get called up soon, it will be in a middle relief role and won't warrant fantasy consideration.
June 23, 2008
Matt Clement has been moved to the bullpen at Triple-A Memphis, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. GM John Mozeliak said, "At this point, we believe Mulder is farther ahead. Clement has had some good outings but has not been able to do it every fifth day."

Our View:He had a tough outing on Friday, as he tries to recover from right shoulder surgery. He hasn't pitched since 2006, when he held a poor 6.61 ERA and 1.76 WHIP over 65.1 innings.
June 18, 2008
Matt Clement's next rehab outing will come on Friday at Triple-A Memphis, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch notes. He is recovering from right shoulder surgery and is 2-0 with a 3.38 ERA through three rehab outings.

Our View:It sounds like teammate Mark Mulder is ahead of Clement at this point, which means Matt is likely two starts away from being considered for a move to the majors. We're not confident that he'll be able to help fantasy teams much.
