Player Notes
October 10, 2008
Michael Barrett has cleared outright waivers with the Padres and has elected to become a free agent, according to the AP.

Our View:The 31-year-old only hit .202 over 94 at-bats with the Padres this season, and will not be highly regarded among free agent catchers.
August 18, 2008
Michael Barrett, who is on the DL while recovering from a broken nose, will undergo vision exercises and therapy, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune.

Our View:There remains no timetable for his return to San Diego, and he is not worth waiting for with a .202 batting average over 30 games this season.
July 5, 2008
Catcher Michael Barrett may be able to return this season, but he will need at least six weeks to recover from a broken nose, fractured right orbital bone, and other facial injuries, the San Diego Union-Tribune reports.

Our View:Barrett is working under a one-year deal, and the Padres probably won't be in a hurry to get him back or use him late in the season. Fantasy owners can let him go.
July 4, 2008
Updating a previous report, Michael Barrett has been placed on the 15-day DL after suffering multiple facial fractures and a broken nose that will require surgery, according to the AP. The Padres purchased the contract of catcher Nick Hundley from Triple-A Portland, to fill his spot on the roster.

Our View:Barrett held very little fantasy value this season, as he was hitting .202 over 30 games, with two homers.
July 4, 2008
Michael Barrett suffered multiple facial fractures and a broken nose that will require surgery after he fouled a ball off that hit him in the face, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune.

Our View:That was a completely freak injury, and the result of bad luck. Barrett's fantasy numbers are not, however. There is no use for him and his .202 average in even the deepest of NL-only leagues.
July 2, 2008
Michael Barrett was forced out of Wednesday night’s game against the Rockies in the second inning after fouling a ball off his face, according to the AP. He remained on the ground near home plate for several minutes, and was attended to by team trainers before walking to the clubhouse under his own power.

Our View:Barrett was taken to a hospital for further evaluation for what was believed to be a fractured nose, according to the Padres. We will keep you posted on his status.
May 24, 2008
The Padres activated Michael Barrett from the DL Saturday. He has been out since April 8 with a strained ligament in his right elbow.

Our View:The Padres could certainly use Barrett's bat, especially with Josh Bard out for at least the next month.
May 24, 2008
Michael Barrett caught last night at Single-A Lake Elsinore and will be re-examined on Saturday or Sunday to determine when he can be activated and added to the 25-man roster.

Our View:Most reports have Barrett joining the team early next week. Josh Bard (ankle) is expected to miss at least 4-6 weeks giving Barrett some time to reestablish himself after a 2007 season where he displayed significant regression.
May 23, 2008
Michael Barrett wasn't promoted on Thursday, even though the Padres placed Josh Bard on the DL. Manager Bud Black informs the San Diego Union-Tribune that Barrett needs to prove he can handle nine innings. Barrett is on a minor league rehab assignment as he comes back from a sore right elbow. He could be activated this weekend.

Our View:Bard wasn't hitting well before injuring his ankle, and Barrett could have an opening to regain a starting job if he can impress in the coming weeks.
May 19, 2008
Michael Barrett is headed for Portland to begin his rehab assignment by playing Monday and Wednesday for the Beavers before transferring to Single-A Lake Elsinore to be closer to the Padres, this according to the Union Tribune.

Our View:Manager Bud Black said he believes Barrett, who has been out since April 7 with a strained right elbow, must play at least five games, possibly 10, before he's ready to rejoin the Padres.
May 15, 2008
Michael Barrett (strained elbow) could be sent out on a minor league rehab assignment as early as next week, according to MLB.com. "Michael is going to throw to the bases on Friday in Seattle to further test the elbow," Padres manager Bud Black said, "but he's making great strides. With the bat, he's swinging great, so there's no issue swinging the bat at all."

Our View:Josh Bard has really struggled at the plate barely hitting above .200 as he has been dealing with his own health concerns, so the Padres would welcome back Barret with open arms when he proves himself to be healthy.
May 7, 2008
The San Diego Union Times reported on Tuesday that catcher Michael Barrett played catch for the third time since he sprained his elbow on April 7, but is still more than two weeks from returning to active duty.

Our View:Barrett played in three games and recorded eight at-bats before going on the disabled list.
April 30, 2008
Michael Barrett is still at least three weeks away from playing for the Padres, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune. He has been sidelined since April 7 by a sprained throwing elbow, and Manager Bud Black said surgery hasn't been ruled out but also isn't being discussed.

Our View:Josh Bard will remain the undisputed starter in San Diego for a few more weeks, but Bard is only hitting .214 over 84 at-bats, and Barrett would cut into his playing time upon his return.
April 25, 2008
Michael Barrett is still not cleared to throw, according to MLB.com. Barrett is on the DL with a elbow strain, and he will need at least another seven to 10 days before he can start throwing a baseball. Manager Bud Black noted that he doesn't think Barrett will need surgery.

Our View:This isn't seen as a setback for Barrett, as the original timetable for his return was initially pegged at two weeks to two months. Josh Bard will remain the undisputed starter in San Diego, and Colt Morton will serve as the top backup.
April 22, 2008
Michael Barrett will have his right elbow strain re-evaluated this week after the Padres return to San Diego, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune. He has been on the DL since April 8.

Our View:Josh Bard will remain the undisputed starter in San Diego, and we will keep you posted on Barrett's status.
April 9, 2008
Michael Barrett could be on the shelf for 2-to-8 weeks due to his right elbow injury, according to the Union-Tribune. Barrett's MRI exam yesterday displayed one millimeter of laxity in the ulnar collateral ligament. Had the ligament been stretched 1.5 to 2 millimeters, surgery might have been necessary, but GM Kevin Towers noted "the hope" is that Barrett will respond favorably to rest and strengthening exercises. The most likely scenario is that Barrett will need 6-8 weeks to return, Manager Black said, but Towers commented that the injury could be nerve-related, and if that is the case, Barrett could be back when he is eligible to come off the disabled list on April 24. Josh Bard will remain the undisputed starter in San Diego, and we will keep you posted on Barrett's status.
April 8, 2008
The Padres placed Michael Barrett on the DL Tuesday with a strained ligament in his right elbow. Barrett was injured during the Padres' 8-4 victory over the Giants on Monday night. The team recalled Colt Morton from Double-A San Antonio to take Barrett's place on the roster. It's not clear how long the injury will sidelined Barrett, but his fantasy value was minimal, anyway, in a backup role.
April 8, 2008
Michael Barrett will be placed on the 15-day DL due to a strained throwing elbow, according to the Union-Tribune. It remains unknown when he may be able to return. Barrett was only hitting 2-for-8 over three games this season, and Josh Bard should rest a bit easier with the catching job likely all to himself for a while.
February 25, 2008
Michael Barrett is looking forward to a fresh start in 2008 after hitting just .226 in 44 games with the Padres, according to MLB.com. "I wanted to stay here because I felt like we left a stone unturned. I wanted to play here again," said Barrett. Barrett might have wanted to stay in San Diego, but his fantasy value has plummeted as he will have to share playing time with Josh Bard behind the dish. Given the fact that Bard has hit .305-14-91 the past two seasons over 620 AB, Barrett figures to be in a big time battle for playing time.
