The Twins showed some interest in acquiring outfielder Jacque Jones from the Cubs last week, but talks have cooled because of financial issues. According to the Minneapolis Star Tribune, the Twins were interested when the Cubs were willing to eat as much as $6.6 million of the $7.2 million remaining on Jones’ contract through 2008, but since then the Cubs have backed off on that assertion, and the Twins can’t afford his salary.

The Cubs and Marlins were close to working on a deal involving Jacque Jones on Tuesday night, but the deal didn't get done. "I just felt like I wasn't going to be rushed into a deal that I didn't think was good for us," Cubs general manager Jim Hendry tells the Miami Herald.

Jacque Jones refuted rumors that he had asked to be traded during the offseason, according to the Chicago Tribune. "Was I uncomfortable with some of the things that happened? Of course," Jones said. "Was I uncomfortable with the ball being thrown at me? Was I uncomfortable with being called [names]? Yes. But I never asked to be traded." Jones said offseason therapy has strengthened the shoulder that bothered him last season. "I was embarrassed by the way I threw the ball last year," he said. "I want to improve on that."

There have been some rumblings that Jacque Jones wants out of Chicago, but manager Lou Piniella has downplayed those reports after having a 20-minute chat with the outfielder last week, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. "He didn't give me that impression at all," Piniella said. "I told him, 'Look, I don't know exactly what is going to happen, but right now, I've got you penciled in as my fifth hitter in the lineup.' I need some left-hand hitting. I told him, 'I like the way you play, I like your enthusiasm, you play to win and you play hard. So I like your style of play.'"
