The White Sox offered Orlando Cabrera salary arbitration, according to the Associated Press.

Our View:Chicago does not intend to re-sign him, but will receive two draft picks as compensation from the club that inks the Type-A free agent.
December 1, 2008
Orlando Cabrera is likely to receive an arbitration offer from the White Sox, according to their official team website.

Our View:The Sox do not intend to have the Type-A free agent return, but know that he will be a hot target in free agency and will turn down their arbitration offer for a lucrative contract, which will net the Sox draft pick compensation from the club that inks him.

The Dodgers reportedly are not showing interest in Orlando Cabrera to replace Rafael Furcal at shortstop, according to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports. The Dodgers believe that Cabrera would require too long of a contract for them to bring him in. There are four teams reportedly interested in Cabrera with six clubs out side of the Dodgers that really need to add a shortstop. Those clubs are the Giants, Orioles, Tigers, Cardinals, Indians, and Blue Jays, with the Giants mainly looking to pursue Edgar Renteria.

Our View:Most of the teams looking to bring in a shortstop will be worried about tying up a lot of money over a lot of years for a guy that doesn't provide that much offense. Cabrera hit .281 last season with eight home runs and 57 RBI which is strong, but probably not eight figure salary per season strong. It would be shocking to see him get a deal for more than three years. He also might not get signed until Rafael Furcal does, as Furcal is the top shortstop on the market and may be used to better determine the free agent market value of other players at the position.

Orlando Cabrera could be an option for the Dodgers if they are unable to retain free agent shortstop Rafael Furcal, according to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports.

Our View:The Dodgers previously tried to acquire Cabrera from the White Sox during the season. Cabrera is aging, but can still run, as he recorded 33 doubles and 19 stolen bases in 2008.
November 6, 2008
The Detroit Free Press does not believe the Tigers are serious contenders to land Orlando Cabrera or Rafael Furcal, even though they covet a shortstop in free agency.

Our View:Cabrera and Furcal are seeking contracts of at least three years in duration, while Detroit is searching for only a short-term solution. The team does not want to invest in a long-term deal as they see top prospect Cale Iorg as their future starter at shortstop.
November 1, 2008
Orlando Cabrera has officially filed for free agency, according to MLB.com.

Our View:Alexei Ramirez is slated to cover shortstop in 2009 and Jayson Nix and Chris Getz are expected to compete for the starting job at second base, making the 34-year-old Cabrera expendable to the Sox. He made $9 million in his lone season with Chicago in 2008.
October 7, 2008
Chicago shortstop Orlando Cabrera is almost certainly not going to be re-signed by the team when free agency begins, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.

Our View:The issue wasn't with Cabrera's play, as he turned in a solid season, hitting .281 with 57 RBI and 19 steals. The problem was in the clubhouse, where he did not mesh with his teammates.
October 6, 2008
Orlando Cabrera went 0-for-4 on Monday night to finish his 2008 playoff experience with a .125 batting average after going just 2-for-16 against the Rays.

Our View:Certainly not the type of effort Cabrera was looking for heading into an offseason of change. Overall this year he hit .281/.334/.371 to almost exactly match his career performance (.274/.322/.721), and he also finished the year with his third straight effort of 90 runs and 19 steals.
October 6, 2008
The Star Tribune indicates that shortstop Orlando Cabrera is on the Twins' list of off-season targets.

Our View:He has won two Gold Gloves, but will turn 34 in November. The Twins like his intensity, and letting him go would allow the Sox to move Alexei Ramirez to shortstop. The source suggests the odds of him heading to Minnesota are 5-1.
September 21, 2008
Orlando Cabrera has a nine-game hitting streak, and if history holds true, he will make it ten on Sunday. Cabrera is hitting .419 (13-for-31) off of Royals starter Brandon Duckworth in his career, with two home runs and a slugging percentage of .677.

Our View:Cabrera has been a mediocre play for fantasy owners in mixed leagues. His best asset are his 18 stolen bases, but even those are not a great amount.
September 14, 2008
Orlando Cabrera had three hits and three runs scored in the second game of a double header with the Tigers, this after going 2-for-3 with a run scored in the opener.

Our View:Cabrera is up to .278, the highest it has been at any point this season, thanks to hits in 13 of his last 14 outings. He still needs two steals for his fourth straight 20-SB season.
August 26, 2008
Leadoff man Orlando Cabrera put his best into the White Sox's win this evening, putting the Orioles to rest by a score of 8-3. Cabrera went 4-for-5 with two doubles and a triple, totaling two RBIs and three runs scored.

Our View:Cabrera is enjoying a strong month of resurgance, hitting .320 through August after hitting just .242 in July.
August 8, 2008
Orlando Cabrera scored a run, had two hits and knocked in two runs from the leadoff spot for the White Sox on Friday.

Our View:Cabrera has produced two hits in five of the past 10 games, though all of those hits have only boosted his average from .264 to .268.
July 30, 2008
The White Sox covet a starting pitcher or a reliever and have made Orlando Cabrera available as trade bait, according to ESPN.

Our View:The Sox haven't been able to draw much interest in their minor league prospects in any trade talks. Three clubs known to be looking for shortstop help are the Cardinals, division rival Twins, and the Orioles.
July 23, 2008
Orlando Cabrera, whose name has come up lately in trade talks, when 2-for-3 with two runs, an RBI and his 16th stolen base for the White Sox.

Our View:Cabrera continues to be a solid source of steals, but after a great month of June (.336) he has fallen on some hard times of late including just one hit in his last four games leading to a .221 average in July.
June 19, 2008
Orlando Cabrera homered and had four RBI as the White Sox rallied from a 6-0 deficit to beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 16-5 on Thursday afternoon.

Our View:Another offensive typhoon by the White Sox at Comerica Park. Cabrera had three RBI in Tuesday's 16-5 win, and the four he added today gives him 30 on the season.
June 17, 2008
With 16 runs on the board, it was easy to see how the Chicago White Sox were going to put an end to the night for the Pittsburgh Pirates, winning 16-5. Four different players posted three RBIs on the night, including designated hitter Jim Thome (2-for-4), outfielder Jermaine Dye (2-for-4), and third baseman Joe Crede (2-for-4). However, the top dog of the night was leadoff man Orlando Cabrera , going 3-for-4 with his 13th double and his 5th homer of the season to total three RBIs and two runs scored.

Our View:Cabrera was hitting .333 for the month of June coming in, touting nine RBIs along the way. He's improved both numbers what appears to be one of his best offensive months ever.
June 13, 2008
Orlando Cabrera hit a solo shot helping the Chicago White Sox to a 5-4 victory over the Colorado Rockies on Friday night.

Our View:The home run was his only hit on the night and lifted his RBI total to 23 and runs scored to 39.
May 28, 2008
Orlando Cabrera apparently isn't happy with Ozzie Guillen. The shortstop doesn't believe the manager had his back when Cabrera wanted two official scorers to reverse his errors, the Chicago Tribune reports. On May 3 and May 22, Cabrera personally called the official scorer to have his gaffes overturned. "If it happens again, I will call again," Cabrera says. "I don't have to do it with other teams because they always had my back. They don't want to do it here, I can take care of my own business." The shortstop later declined to talk about his comfortable level with the club or his future.

Our View:Well, that's one way to win a Gold Glove, right? Cabrera is in the last year of his contract, and better stats will help him earn more money this offseason. So, we don't blame Orlando for calling the press box. It doesn't sound like he'll be too eager to re-sign with the Pale Hose.
May 27, 2008
The White Sox took the 8-3 fall this evening from the Cleveland Indians despite the efforts from shortstop Orlando Cabrera . Cabrera went 2-for-4 with a walk at the plate, including his eighth double of the season to total one RBI.

Our View:Cabrera went 4-for-6 against Cleveland on Sunday and seems to have a good thing working against the Indians' pitching.
May 18, 2008
Orlando Cabrera went deep twice on Sunday from the leadoff spot as he accrued two runs and three RBI against the Giants.

Our View:Cabrera entered the game hitting just .220, and with today's outing he doubled his home run total. Cabrera is likely due an extended hot streak given his anemic performance so far, perhaps today will be the springboard for that effort.
April 25, 2008
Orlando Cabrera has reached base safely in 17 straight games, according to MLB.com. He has registered 21 hits and 11 walks over 21 games, while scoring 14 runs. He also has three stolen bases to his credit.

Our View:Cabrera is getting the job done for the first place White Sox, and he should remain a solid fantasy contributor.
April 12, 2008
Orlando Cabrera took a fastball from Justin Verlander off his ear flap on Saturday, but he remained in the game and was fine thereafter, this according to MLB.com.

Our View:Cabrera might take Sunday off just to be sure he is fit, but the good news is that this shouldn't affect him long-term.
April 12, 2008
Orlando Cabrera went 1-for-3 with an RBI in Saturday's 7-0 win over the Tigers, and he notably registered his first home run as a member of the White Sox.

Our View:He scored two runs in this game as well, and is seemingly starting to come around.
March 26, 2008
Orlando Cabrera made another fielding error during battle with Milwaukee, and he now has four errors this spring. The Sox brought him in primarily for his defense and they cannot be pleased with their investment so far, especially since he also holds an anemic .217 batting average.
February 22, 2008
Orlando Cabrera said there was "basic interest ... for both sides" to iron out an extension with the White Sox, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. "It's kind of early, though," Cabrera said. "I mean, I really like what I see so far. I've always liked Ozzie [Guillen], and I like the way he manages. I love Chicago, and my wife loves Chicago. Everything looks good, but I always let my agent and Kenny work it out. I have a lot of things to do this year with my new team. So I don't want to jump ahead and think about stuff like that." GM Ken Williams has said several times since acquiring Cabrera in November that he'd like to lock the shortstop up to a new deal; Cabrera is in the last year of his current contract.
