Kelvim Escobar had shoulder surgery and is now looking forward to the next stage of his attempt to come back from a tear in his right labrum, according to MLB.com. "I feel good. Now I know I have to focus on one thing, and that's my rehab. I'll put everything into it and dedicate myself to getting back on the mound next season."

Our View:Estimates for his return to action range from nine to 12 months, so it will be quite a while before we will know if Escobar will be able to regain his once filthy stuff.
July 22, 2008
Kelvim Escobar's surgery to repair a torn labrum in his right shoulder will happen on July 29, the AP reports.

Our View:We'll have a better timetable after the operation, but Escobar could easily be looking at a full year of rehab.
July 11, 2008
The Orange County Register reports that Kelvim Escobar has opted to have surgery on the torn labrum in his right shoulder.

Our View:The team, as well as Escobar, delayed this decision for a while and it may come back to haunt them. He will miss nine to 12 months.
July 9, 2008
GM Tony Reagins and agent Peter Greenberg have agreed to put off a decision regarding Kelvim Escobar undergoing season-ending surgery, according to the LA Times. The decision will be put off until at least Thursday. Angels' physician Lewis Yocum and Mets' orthopedist David Altchek have checked Escobar's torn labrum. The doctors have spoken on the phone and are scheduled to attend the same conference this week, where they will discuss Escobar's situation. Reagins said, "Once that occurs, a decision will be made if we move forward on surgery and the timing of the surgery. I wouldn't say surgery is the option, but it is an option."

Our View:Surgery would sideline him for at least a year, hence ending his bid to return to the Angels in 2008.
July 8, 2008
It is becoming more likely that Kelvim Escobar will undergo season ending shoulder surgery to repair a torn labrum, according to the LA Times. Escobar worked to strengthen his shoulder and made two starts in the minor leagues, but the last time he picked up a ball he was unable to complete 10 throws because of discomfort. Manager Mike Sciosca said, "It will be Escobar's decision and we're going to support it. It's a little disappointing. He's worked very hard to get to this point. But if surgery's the only thing that's going to get him back to where he needs to be, then it's obviously something he's going to need to look at."

Our View:Surgery would sideline him for at least a year, hence ending his bid to return to the Angels in 2008.
July 5, 2008
Kelvim Escobar tried to throw on Friday afternoon, but he stopped short of 10 tosses due to further shoulder soreness. He plans to meet with Dr. David Altcheck, the Mets medical director, in the near future, and surgery may be the result. "The MRI was good," Escobar tells the Los Angeles Times. "They said muscles that didn't look good before looked a lot better. [But] something's causing me a lot of inflammation, and they don't know what it is. When I throw, it's taking longer than normal to recover."

Our View:We had a small ray of hope for Escobar to return this season, but this week's setback makes it seem unlikely.
July 3, 2008
Kelvim Escobar is probably going to miss the rest of the year, according to the Los Angeles Times. "I woke up [Tuesday] and it was like, wow, it's painful," he told the paper.

Our View:Escobar will likely get an MRI, and may need another surgery, which would keep him out of the game until the middle of next season. Any fantasy owners hopeful of picking him up for the second half will now have to eliminate him as an option for pitching help.
July 1, 2008
Earlier today we reported Angels pitcher Kelvim Escobar was struggling with discomfort but had pitched well in three scoreless innings for Single-A Rancho Cucamonga. Now reports comes from Orange County claiming Escobar may have in fact reaggravated the torn right labrum and could be looking at an extended rehab assignment, according to MLB.com.

Our View:The Angels report Escobar is expressing pain in the shoulder and that he could tell during warm-ups that something was wrong with his shoulder, yet he still decided to pitch and on Tuesday he admitted that it wasn't the right decision. Escobar said he is scheduled to meet with Dr. Lewis Yocum during the Angels' game against the A's on Tuesday night. He said he'll figure out his options once he meets with Yocum, but his return will definitely be delayed.
July 1, 2008
Kelvim Escobar had some trouble warming up on Monday night but he pushed through it on his way to working three scoreless innings at Single-A Rancho Cucamonga, according to the Orange County Register. ”I felt good and that’s the most important thing,” he said. ”I threw strikes and my changeup has been good."

Our View:Escobar threw in the 90's at times, but it was clear that this was just another in a series of steps that he hopes will culminate in him pitching out of the pen for the Angels at some point toward the end of July.
June 24, 2008
Angels pitcher Kelvim Escobar will take another step towards a return to the majors on Wednesday, according to MLB.com.

Our View:Escobar, recovering from a torn right labrum, will throw two innings in the Arizona Summer League. Manager Mike Scioscia confirmed that the pitcher would be limited to 30 pitches in the outing. Scioscia declined to give a specific timetable for the starter's return, citing the fact that Escobar could easily suffer setbacks, and Scioscia didn't want to speculate.
June 21, 2008
Kelvim Escobar took another step forward Saturday in his recovery from a torn labrum. "Kelvim threw 30 pitches and did real well," manager Mike Scioscia said on MLB.com. "With his experience, the way he pitched last year, to have him as an option is going to be big." Escobar is scheduled to make a start on Thursday in the Arizona Summer League and will be limited to 30 pitches again.

Our View:It isn't clear at this point whether Escobar will be able to build up enough arm strength to return as a starter. It's more likely he'll come back as a reliever.
June 21, 2008
Kelvim Escobar, who is recovering from a torn right labrum, will throw 45 pitches in a simulated game today at the Angels' spring training complex in Arizona, according to the LA Daily News.

Our View:If that goes well, he is scheduled to follow that up by pitching in an Arizona Summer League game sometime next week. He is on pace to return to the Angels in late July.
June 20, 2008
Kelvim Escobar, who is recovering from a torn right labrum, is on his way to Tempe, Arizona to continue his rehab stint, according to MLB.com. He will throw a simulated game on Tuesday, and could pitch two innings in an Arizona Summer League game sometime next week.

Our View:He remains on pace to return to the Angels in late July, but his fantasy value won't be as high as when he won 18 games in 2007, especially since he could end working out of the bullpen.
June 18, 2008
Kelvim Escobar took the mound on Tuesday. He threw 30 pitches to a catcher and then worked a two-inning simulated game against four Angels hitters. Escobar tells the Los Angeles Times that it's "a big step for me." The right-hander adds, "I'm very pleased, very happy. The most important thing [is] I felt stronger. The next few days are going to be the most important. See how my arm responds." Escobar has a tear in his right labrum, and he is attempting to return without surgery.

Our View:It all goes well, Escobar could begin a minor league rehab assignment by the end of June and put himself on pace to return in late July. We're not expecting him to be nearly as valuable in fantasy leagues as he was in 2007, and there's still talk of him pitching in relief.
June 14, 2008
Angels RHP Kelvim Escobar reports no feelings of pain or discomfort in his rehabbed shoulder today, one day after completing a bullpen session, and the team anticipates they will put the hurler in front of live batters soon, according to MLB.com.

Our View:Escobar, who was diagnosed with a shoulder tear in late March, threw 45 pitches Friday, which is the most he's thrown all season. He said his shoulder was feeling strong the day after his session in which he threw only fastballs and changeups. Escobar said he's "close" to a rehab assignment, and he doesn't mind if he comes back as either a reliever or a starter. If Escobar comes back as a reliever, there's a chance he could be back by the All-Star Game, which is July 15. If he prepares to be a starter, however, the process could take until late July or even longer. That's why Escobar wants to know what his role will be before he makes his rehab appearances. Manager Mike Scioscia felt a little different than Escobar, as the skipper said there's no reason why they shouldn't see how Escobar responds as a starter, which was his role last season when he won a career-high 18 games and had a 3.40 ERA in 32 starts.
June 12, 2008
Kelvim Escobar, who is trying to rebound from a a torn labrum in his right shoulder, is scheduled to throw 45 pitches off the mound Friday, according to the LA Times. He said, "I threw 30 pitches Monday and there was no pain, no weakness. That's a lot of progress. I feel good."

Our View:He continues to make favorable progress, and the team believes he could be back before the All-Star break. The team would then decide whether to use him in the rotation or let him work out of the pen, depending on the team's needs at the time.
June 10, 2008
The Angels believe Kelvim Escobar could be back with the club before the All-Star break, albeit not in his usual role. "I think if he's going to pitch in our bullpen, he could be back by then," manager Mike Scioscia explains to MLB.com. "If he's going to be a starter, you're talking about a longer process, like the end of July." Escobar has twice thrown off a mound, and the club is pleased with how his right shoulder has held up. Escobar has a tear in his labrum.

Our View:We remain skeptical about Escobar helping fantasy owners much this year. One need only look at John Smoltz for a cautionary tale. Still, this is excellent news for teams holding Escobar in a DL spot.
June 9, 2008
Kelvim Escobar threw off a mound Monday for the second time this season and said his shoulder "continues to feel stronger," according to MLB.com. The righty tossed 30 fastballs at about 70-80 percent effort. "It was the first time I'd thrown those pitches off the mound in a long time," Escobar said. "It felt pretty good." Escobar is recovering from a tear in his labrum.

Our View:There is no timetable for Escobar's return, but it's a good sign that his shoulder feels good thus far. We'll let you know how he progresses.
June 7, 2008
Kelvim Escobar threw off a mound for the first time since last season Friday afternoon, according to the LA Daily News. He is recovering from a torn right labrum, and is thinking about his role when he returns to the Angels. He stated, "I don't think I'll be a starter this year. I think they want to take it easier on my arm this year, make sure I get my health back and let me help the team in the bullpen. And you know, our starting rotation has been very good. Those guys have been very good."

Our View:Coach Mike Sciosca said he has also thought about it, but any discussion about his role is premature. Escobar won 18 games as a starter in 2007, with a 3.40 ERA and solid 1.27 WHIP. He is projected to return in July or August, and a lot can happen before then.
June 3, 2008
Kelvim Escobar, who is recovering from a shoulder tear, has increased his intensity of flat- ground work, and could begin throwing off a mound early next week, according to the LA Times.

Our View:Escobar is projected to come back in July or August. He previously noted that he would be happy to start or serve out of the bullpen, depending on the Angels' needs at the time of his return.
May 27, 2008
Kelvim Escobar is not thinking about surgery anymore to repair his torn right labrum, according to the LA Times. He once thought that his career may be over, but after visiting his team-mates for the first time since spring trainining, he commented, "I'm not even thinking about surgery anymore. In my mind, I'm preparing myself to come back." Escobar is throwing regularly but has yet to throw off a mound, and he said he did not anticipate he could return until after the All-Star break.

Our View:Manager Mike Scioscia said the Angels would stretch out his innings during workouts so the team would have the option to use him as a starter. Escobar would be happy to start or relieve depending on the Angels' needs when he returns in July or August.
May 22, 2008
Kelvim Escobar has increased his long toss program to 120 feet, according to the LA Times. He is in Arizona rehabilitating from his shoulder tear.

Our View:There is a chance he could begin throwing off a mound by early June. The right-hander is scheduled to be evaluated next week in Anaheim.
May 2, 2008
Manager Mike Scioscia has received an encouraging report from athletic trainer Ned Bergert on injured starter Kelvim Escobar. "He feels great -- that's the word I just got from Ned," Scioscia said in the LA Times. "Not that he's throwing his split-fingered fastball and slider at full bore, but he feels much different than he did when he started to throw [in mid-March]." Escobar is in the second week of his throwing program and is tossing from nearly 90 feet. He had been shut down in March after throwing just three times from 45 feet.

Our View:We still have our doubts that Escobar will amount to anything for fantasy owners this year, but this is a positive step for him.
April 29, 2008
Kelvim Escobar had his best session in more than a month on Monday, according to the LA Times. He threw 60 feet without pain at the Angels' training camp in Tempe, Ariz, but Mike Scioscia commented, "These are baby steps. There's a long way to go. But he hasn't had any of the setbacks that shut him down last month." He is recovering from a torn right labrum.

Our View:He has a long way to go, but this is favorable news as he would need to undergo surgery if the rehab doesn't work.
April 22, 2008
Kelvim Escobar will throw on Wednesday, his first such action since being diagnosed with a torn labrum in his right shoulder. "Escobar's going to throw tomorrow, start the progression," manager Mike Scioscia informs MLB.com. "It's very encouraging. He's definitely more upbeat."

Our View:If the rehab doesn't work, Escobar will need to undergo surgery. We're hoping for the best, but many people are expecting the worst.
April 14, 2008
Kelvim Escobar does not appear to be close to returning, according to the LA Times. He was sent to the DL because of a tear in his shoulder in late March, is rehabbing in Arizona and could pick up a ball "By the end of this week," according to Manager Sciosca. He added, "That's the time frame we've been given, but it's in pencil." If Escobar feels pain after continuing his throwing program, he will likely undergo season-ending surgery.

Our View:This is unfavorable news for Escobar, who notably went 18-7 in 2007.
April 9, 2008
Kelvim Escobar will be strength-tested in the next day or two, and Manager Sciosca noted, "With the possibility of resuming his throwing program in 10 days." This according to MLB.com. If he needs surgery on his injured shoulder, his season would likely be over. He went 18-7 in 2007 and he would be a key loss to the Angels' pitching staff.
April 7, 2008
Kelvim Escobar has been performing strengthening exercises, but he remains "a couple weeks" away from throwing, manager Mike Scioscia tells the Los Angeles Times. The right-hander is trying to rehab a torn labrum.
March 30, 2008
The Angels placed Kelvim Escobar on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to March 21, on Saturday. Escobar is out indefinitely and told the LA Times earlier in the week there is a chance he will need season ending surgery for a tear in his right shoulder. His fantasy status has plummeted and the right-hander should be ignored outside of deep leagues with deep reserve rosters.
March 26, 2008
Kelvim Escobar revealed on Wednesday that he has a tear in his right shoulder and may need season-ending surgery. "I'm concerned, I don't know what's going to happen, I don't even know if I'll be able to pitch again," he tells the Los Angeles Times. Escobar will rehab the joint for another two weeks before visiting a specialist and considering an operation. These stories never seem to end well, and fantasy owners who already drafted Escobar for their leagues are in a bad spot. We can't expect Dustin Moseley or Nick Adenhart (whichever one makes the rotation) to pitch anywhere near as well as Escobar did in 2007.
March 25, 2008
Kelvim Escobar has been shut down due to discomfort in his ailing shoulder, according to the LA Times. "When you're activating your arm, sometimes you have little glitches here and there," manager Mike Scioscia said. "He started to throw, felt a little discomfort, and now he's trying to get some of the inflammation back out of there. It's nothing unusual in a rehab scenario to have to take a step back." Escobar was just a week into a throwing program designed to build his shoulder strength back up, but this setback could keep him out until June. Realistically, his ongoing problems make him an incredible injury risk, despite his quality upside.
March 16, 2008
For the first time since January, Kelvim Escobar was able to play catch on Saturday, according to the LA Times. "I'm very pleased," said Escobar. "But at the same time, I have to be patient. I can't rush it. I'm going to do what they tell me to make sure I don't have a setback." He'll continue to stretch out his flat-ground sessions for a several weeks before stepping onto a mound. If all goes well in his recovery from a sore shoulder, Escobar could begin a rehab assignment by the middle of next month and join the Angels in May.
March 15, 2008
Kelvim Escobar went through a strength test on his sore shoulder Friday and should begin throwing within a matter of days, according to the OC Register. Barring a setback, Escobar should be ready for his season debut within the first couple of weeks of May.
March 1, 2008
Angels manager Mike Scioscia said that Kelvim Escobar is "still in the same window" to begin a throwing program in mid-to-late March, according to the LA Daily News. Even if he stays on course throughout his rehab from a sore shoulder, Escobar probably will not be ready for game action until May.
February 16, 2008
Kelvim Escobar isn't expected to throw a baseball until mid-March as he recovers from a sore right shoulder. "He'll be throwing a baseball sometime in the second, third week of March, playing catch. If there are no setbacks, hopefully we can get him going early in the season," manager Mike Scoscia tells MLB.com. We don't have a firm timetable for Escobar, but he won't be ready for the start of the season and this news strongly suggests he may not be ready to join the rotation until May. His fantasy stock is sliding quickly.
February 14, 2008
Angels skipper Mike Scioscia told the team's official website that Kelvim Escobar is still experiencing the shoulder discomfort that caused him problems at the start and finish of what was a stellar 2007 season. "He's getting his treatments, doing his rehab," Scioscia said of Escobar, who was 18-7 with a 3.40 ERA despite September struggles (7.99 ERA). "It's still a matter of strengthening his shoulder. There is no timetable for Escobar's return to the mound, making him a draft day risk. The Venezuelan right-hander is expected to start the regular season on the disabled list.
February 7, 2008
The shoulder discomfort that Kelvim Escobar experienced while throwing this offseason is expected to force the right-hander to begin the year on the DL. Escobar had inflammation in the shoulder late in September that caused him to miss a start, and it flared up over the winter. An MRI showed no significant changes in the shoulder from last fall, but manager Mike Scioscia acknowledged that the rehab program the team has mapped out won't have Escobar ready by the season opener. "It's doubtful he'll be ready for the start of the season, but if the strength comes back in the shoulder, he has a good chance to be very strong early in the year and come back and do what he did last year," Scioscia said in the LA Times. "You can't rush it. There is some weakness in some areas that need to be strengthened, and once they are, [the Angels' medical staff] will feel more comfortable with him throwing."
February 6, 2008
Kelvim Escobar is rehabbing his throwing shoulder in Tempe, Arizona after experiencing discomfort during his preparations for the upcoming season, according to the AP. Escobar underwent an MRI performed by Dr. Lewis Yocum that showed no significant changes in the shoulder. Even so, the Angels are progressing cautiously. Seeing that he's one of the top starters in the American League, this is something that shouldn't be glossed over. Pay close attention to Escobar this spring.
