July 21, 2008 The Philadelphia Inquirer states that Pat Burrell is unhappy with being removed late in Sunday's game against the Marlins. He said, "I'm upset, absolutely. I'm upset, and I have been for a long time. It's not personal. I don't want to ever come out of close games." On Sunday, Burrell was replaced by Eric Bruntlett in the bottom of the eighth with the Phillies ahead, 2-1. Cole Hamels gave up a game-tying home run in the inning. Burrell had been 5- for-12 with two doubles and two home runs in the series. His would-be spot in the lineup came up in the top of the 11th, and Bruntlett hit a leadoff pop-up to second, dropping his season average to .231. Our View:Manager Charlie Manuel routinely replaces Burrell with a speedier defender when the Phillies have leads late in games. Manuel is a good skipper and had good intentions, but you can't fault Burrell for being angry, as he has 25 homers and 59 RBI for the season, with a .280 average. |
