As expected, Placido Polanco has signed a three-year, $18 million contract to play third base for the Phillies, according to the Detroit Free Press. The sides hold a mutual option for a fourth year.

Our View:The deal is a somewhat risky one for the Phillies, as Polanco, age 34, has seen both his on-base percentage and slugging percentage take steep declines each of the past two seasons. He can still rake, as evidenced by his 354 hits the past two years, but could really be beginning to slow down. Regardless, he is a big offensive upgrade over Pedro Feliz.

Updating an earlier item, Jon Heyman of Sports Illustrated reports that Placido Polanco is likely to sign a three-year, $18 million contract with the Philadelphia Phillies on Thursday.

Our View:He will be their third baseman. Polanco was with the Phillies from 2002-2005, hitting above .290 during his time there. While a defensive downgrade at the hot corner from Pedro Feliz, he is a tremendous offensive upgrade, and should make the already potent Philadelphia lineup even more dangerous.

The Philadelphia Phillies are believed to be close to making Placido Polanco their next third baseman, according to Fox Sports.

Our View:While not the defensive dynamo Pedro Feliz is, Polanco has a much bigger bat, and his 354 hits from the past two seasons would fit in quite nicely in Philadelphia's explosive lineup. If he does sign, the deal is believed to worth somewhere in the neighborhood of $10-12 million (total) over two seasons.

According to MLB.com, the Red Sox have shown interest in second baseman Placido Polanco.

Our View:Polanco is a free agent and wasn't offered arbitration by the Tigers, so he wouldn't cost the Sox anything but a contract. They would have to shift Dustin Pedroia from second to shortstop, as Polanco is the superior defender at the position, but the former MVP is open to the idea. Boston has also shown interest in shortstop Marco Scutaro, who is a Type A free agent.

The Phillies remain interested in Placido Polanco, according to the Philadelphia Daily News.

Our View:The Tigers did not offer Polanco salary arbitration, and the Phillies would consider employing his as their No. 1 third baseman. The 34-year-old vet previously served time with Philadelphia before heading to Detroit in 2005.
