Frank Thomas will not require surgery on his injured right quadriceps, as there is no tear in the area where the muscle connects with the knee, just scar tissue breakdown and tendinitis, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. Thomas intends to play at least one more year, and he'd like to come back to Oakland. "I've made my money, now it's about fun," Thomas said. "I still have some things I want to accomplish. My goal is to come back here, and we'll see how it works out - that would be my first choice. Knowing I'll be healthy is good. I'm ready to get this behind me and gear up for next year."

Our View:The Big Hurt appeared in just 71 games this year due to injury, and he was ineffective in those contests. He could have AL-only value if he lands a DH gig somewhere.
September 4, 2008
Frank Thomas will not return this season, as he was placed on the 60-day disabled list, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

Our View:The likely future Hall of Famer did not have one of his most productive seasons, and it is clear that the end of his career is coming soon.
September 1, 2008
Frank Thomas could need surgery to deal with his right quad injury, and it does not look like he will return to the A's this season, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

Our View:Thomas was placed on the DL Saturday, and will undergo more tests soon. He did not provide fantasy owners much in his 246 at-bats, with just 8 home runs, 30 RBI and a .240 batting average.
August 30, 2008
Frank Thomas has been placed on the 15-day DL due to a strained right groin, according to the AP.

Our View:Thomas has been hitting well as of late with six hits over his last three games, and it is unfortunate he is forced to his second stint on the DL this season.
August 21, 2008
Frank Thomas was ejected from Thursday's game in the sixth inning for arguing balls and strikes.

Our View:Thomas ended his night 0-2 with a strikeout. Thomas' struggles continue as he is now hitting .231 on the season.
July 31, 2008
Oakland DH Frank Thomas will be activated off the disabled list in time for Oakland's series in Boston on Friday, according to OaklandAthletics.com.

Our View:Thomas was hitting well for Oakland after being released from the Toronto Blue Jays. He could be a factor in fantasy baseball, but it might be wise to monitor his progress for a few games before giving him a roster spot.
July 30, 2008
Frank Thomas could be activated from the DL as soon as Friday, according to the AP. Thomas faced live pitching against Keith Foulke in a simulated game Wednesday, which was the final step in his recovery from a strained right quadriceps muscle. He said, "I’m ready to go. I’ve got enough to get around the bases, that’s all I need. Two weeks from now I should be back to full speed."

Our View:He should provide a boost to a struggling A's club that has lost nine of 11 games since the All-Star break. He should serve as a decent option in AL-only leagues when he returns.
July 30, 2008
Frank Thomas, who is recovering from right quad tendinitis, took batting practice for a third straight day Tuesday, according to the SF Chronicle.

Our View:He is on pace to be activated from the DL on the upcoming trip through Boston, Toronto, and Detroit.
July 29, 2008
Frank Thomas, recovering from a right quad tendinitis, had a good batting practice session Monday, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. He also ran out of the box and ran the bases and said everything went well.

Our View:The Big Hurt doesn't want to go on a rehab assignment, and the A's can't force him to do so. A decision will be made Wednesday.
July 28, 2008
Frank Thomas, who is recovering from right quad tendinitis, said he felt improvement for the third straight day when running Sunday, according to the SF Chronicle. He intends to "really turn up" his running pace today.

July 27, 2008
Frank Thomas, who is recovering from right quad tendinitis, noted that his running session on Saturday felt much better than Friday's, according to the SF Chronicle. He added, "I didn't feel like Gumby this time."

Our View:It appears he is on pace for an early August return to the diamond, but the team is yet to set an exact timetable.
July 21, 2008
Frank Thomas has been cleared to start a running problem on Friday, the AP reports. The DH has been taking batting practice as he works his way back from right quad tendinitis. Thomas hasn't played since May 27.

Our View:The A's don't have a set date for the Big Hurt's return, but it sounds like he's getting closer. We'll continue to follow and update his status.
July 19, 2008
Frank Thomas on the disabled list with right quadriceps tendinitis, took batting practice Friday.

Our View:No word yet on when the Big Hurt is targeting a comeback.
July 12, 2008
Frank Thomas, who is recovering from right quad tendinitis, took batting practice by way of soft toss on Friday, according to the SF Chronicle. He plans to keep doing so through the All-Star break and hopes to take batting practice off live pitching next weekend.

Our View:He remains hopeful to return to Oakland in late July.
July 9, 2008

Our View:He is hopeful to return to Oakland in late July.
July 2, 2008
According to the San Francisco Chronicle, Frank Thomas will have another MRI on his injured hamstring on Monday.

Our View:The slugger is hoping that he will be cleared to start hitting next week. We will know more after the MRI.
June 14, 2008
Frank Thomas has had a setback in his rehab from right quad tendinitis. The slugger has been told to hold off from all baseball activities until July 1. "It’ll take a little more time four him to heal than we originally thought," manager Bob Geren tells the AP. "That’s kind of bad news."

Our View:That's a pretty notable setback, considering Thomas was due to return in about a week. The don't know how long it will back the Big Hurt to ramp up after July 1, but fantasy owners obviously can't count on him for a while.
June 11, 2008
Manager Bob Geren told the San Francisco Chronicle that Frank Thomas could be back with the A's on June 20 when the team completes their games in NL parks. Thomas is rehabbing his strained right quadriceps muscle at home in Las Vegas, but Geren said that the Big Hurt will visit a doctor in LA this week to see how the muscle is healing.

Our View:Thomas won't need a rehab assignment.
June 6, 2008
Frank Thomas is back in his home in Las Vegas rehabbing from his right quad injury, and the A's expect Thomas to be in Sin City for about another week, according to the AP. Thomas has a physical therapist he works with in Las Vegas. "He's going to be there a while," manager Bob Geren said. "We want to make sure it's healthy, period." The Big Hurt isn't yet ready to begin hitting again.

Our View:The A's have interleague games coming up, so Thomas wasn't going to play in NL parks, anyway. It sounds like he'll be back before too long, though.
May 29, 2008
Frank Thomas has landed on the 15-day DL, according to the AP. He has been brought down by inflammation of his right quad. The team hence decided to activate third baseman Eric Chavez from the 60-day DL earlier than expected.

Our View:He isn't expected to be out of action for long. Jack Cust will platoon at DH with Mike Sweeney and Chavez while Thomas is out of action.
May 28, 2008
The results of Frank Thomas' MRI aren't known yet, but the DH isn't expected to be out for more than a handful of days, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. Thomas has a slight quadriceps strain and also quadriceps tendinitis. He said he'd hurt his right leg when he was thrown out at home in Cleveland on May 13, and he's received treatment for the problem since then.

Our View:It doesn't appear that this will be an issue, since speed isn't exactly a big part of Thomas' game. We'll let you know the results of the MRI when we have them.
May 28, 2008
Frank Thomas is playing through a strained quad, the Oakland Tribune reports. "Day-to-day," manager Bob Geren explains. "Aren't we all?"

Our View:The Big Hurt doesn't need to be able to run well in order to hit, and this ailment sounds minor.
May 23, 2008
Frank Thomas was 3-for-4 with a two-run homer in Friday's 8-3 win over Boston.

Our View:The Big Hurt is hitting .305 with four homers and 16 RBI in 25 games since going back to Oakland, with all four of his dingers coming in the last four games.
May 20, 2008
Frank Thomas went deep twice on Monday night on his way to his best effort of the season as he went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and three RBI.

Our View:It only took big Frank 22 games in an A's uniform to hit his first home run. Thomas is now hitting .237 on the year, far below what is an acceptable number for a DH with only five home runs in 131 AB.
May 15, 2008
Frank Thomas went 2-for-3 in Thursday's 4-2 loss to Cleveland. He also drew one walk.

Our View:That was his fourth multi-hit game in May, and he has seven RBI over 13 games in the month so far as well.
May 7, 2008
Frank Thomas is not in the starting lineup for the A's today. He is being replaced by Mike Sweeney who is hitting third in the batting order.

Our View:Thomas is still sgruggling at the plate, despite his change of scenery. Sweeney is hitting a puny .212 with 16 RBI and three home runs.
May 6, 2008
Frank Thomas isn't sweating his .198 average. He figures 2008 will be no different than 2006 or 2007, when he needed a couple months to find his groove. "The same thing happened in Toronto last year," Thomas tells MLB.com. "It took me eight or nine weeks to really get going. Now we're five, six weeks into the season and I haven't really gotten going this year, either. So that's three years in a row it's happened, but the first two, I did get it going, and this year won't be any different." Thomas ended up at .270-39-114 in 2006 and .277-26-95 last year.

Our View:If the Big Hurt is right, that means he's a great buy low candidate in fantasy leagues.
May 3, 2008
Frank Thomas went 0-for-4 with four strikeouts in Saturday's 6-3 loss to Texas.

Our View:Thomas is 8-for-34 (.235) with no homers and seven RBI over 10 games with Oakland so far.
April 30, 2008
Frank Thomas went 0-for-4 on Wednesday night as he saw his season average dip to just .181.

Our View:Since joining the A's Thomas is hitting just .217 which is an improvement on the .167 mark he put up with the Jays. Maybe Thomas will find his stroke, but it's really starting to look like he hasn't got much left at the plate, and given that he only qualifies at the utility spot, you really have to think about whether or not he is worth a roster spot.
April 25, 2008
Frank Thomas has been named the full-time DH in Oakland, according to MLB.com.

Our View:Thomas blasted 39 homers with Oakland in 2006, and he is worth targeting if you can steal him for a low price. He was only hitting .159 over 63 at-bats with Toronto, but still managed to generate three home runs and 11 RBI.
April 24, 2008
Frank Thomas has been brought back to Oakland, according to the AP. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Our View:Thomas memorably belted 39 homers with Oakland in 2006, and his fantasy stock is back up. He should serve as the lead DH over Jack Cust and Mike Sweeney.
April 23, 2008
Frank Thomas was all but signed with the Oakland A's, but reports indicate a second offer arrived and delayed Thomas' official decision, according to Yahoo Sports.

Our View:The second offer, from a unknown team at this time, has left the decision to join the A's as a question. Thomas has played in Oakland before and enjoyed a resurgence of power as their designated hitter, belting 39 homers in 2006. After being released from the Toronto Blue Jays earlier this week, the offer from his former employer seemed like a event all but done, but it now appears Thomas has options to ponder. We will update as more news becomes available.
April 23, 2008
Updating an earlier report, it now appears that Frank Thomas will sign with the Oakland A's, according to a report on Yahoo Sports. This report quoted an unnamed source and has not been officially confirmed as of yet.

Our View:Thomas will return to the team that he hit 39 home runs for in 2006, but this is an odd move given that the A's already have Mike Sweeney and Jack Cust, two players not exactly known for their glovework. If this move does happen, Mike Sweeney's role would likely diminish to that of a glorified pinch hitter.
April 23, 2008
Frank Thomas is on Oakland's radar following his release from Toronto, according to ESPN.com. The team will reportedly have a talk whether to sign him within the next 48 hours. The team also reportedly likes the idea of having Thomas as their DH over Mike Sweeney, by way of power versus average. The Athletics notably tried to re-sign Thomas after the 2006 season but lost him to the Blue Jays, who are responsible for virutally all of Thomas's salary this year after releasing him. Any team that picked up Thomas would only have to pay him the prorated minimum salary.

Our View:Thomas would benefit from a change of scenery in Oakland, and while he was in a slump, he still generated three homers and 11 RBI over 16 games. Keep him on your rosters if you drafted him.
April 20, 2008
Chicago Manager Ozzie Guillen commented on the release of former White Sox first baseman and DH Frank Thomas, according to MLB.com. Guillen said, "It happens to everyone. It happens to a lot of people in this game, and it's unfortunate happening early in the season. Being released is not the best way to finish his career, but he can play with someone else this season."

Our View:Another team will likely take a chance on the Future Hall of Famer.
April 20, 2008
Frank Thomas has been released by the Blue Jays, according to the AP. He was displeased with his benching on Saturday due to his current 0-for-13 slump, and has been cut loose today. GM J.P. Ricciardi denied that it was contract related, and believes Manager John Gibbons make the move to spark a struggling Toronto offense.

Our View:Another team will likely take a chance on the future Hall of Famer, and it is too early too cut him loose from your fantasy roster.
April 20, 2008
Frank Thomas has been removed from the Jays' starting lineup after falling into a 10-for-60 slump to start the season, and he is angry following his benching, according to the AP. Thomas did not shake hands with his teammates following Toronto’s win over Detroit on Saturday, and he left the team clubhouse without talking to reporters. Before the game he stated, "I’m angry, I know I can help this team. My career isn’t going to end like this."

Our View:He is also hitless over his last 13 at-bats, and his fantasy stock will continue to drop.
April 19, 2008
Toronto designated hitter Frank Thomas has been removed from the Blue Jays' starting lineup as the team prepares for the their Saturday battle with Detroit, and he will not be returned to the starting lineup any time soon, according to MLB.com. Reports indicate manager John Gibbons has decided to bench Thomas in favor of Matt Stairs at DH, a difficult decision based on a horrific slump that has seen Thomas hit .167 through 72 plate appearances.

Our View:As has been the case throughout his career, Thomas wasted no time in stating he felt there was more to the decision than his lack of production. "Basically, I've been told that I'm not goign to be in that lineup. Gibby told me that this morning. I see it as something else is going on. We'll see how that plays out. You know what's goign on and I know what's going on. We'll see how it plays out. I'm just a little frustrated right now. There are some things going on around here this year that I haven't been happy about." Thomas may have a poing. His current contract stipulates the reward of a vested option for the 2009 season that would pay him $10 million, a salary that can be guaranteed by notching 304 more plate appearances this season.
April 11, 2008
Frank Thomas has struggled over his career against Vincente Padilla, tonight's opposing hurler for Texas, according to MLB.com. Thomas is only hitting 4-for-21 against Padilla, and could have another rough outing, as he is only hitting .182 so far this season.
March 25, 2008
Blue Jays brass have -- at least privately -- deemed it necessary for manager John Gibbons to bench Frank Thomas from time to time, according to MetroNews.ca. If the Big Hurt reaches 376 plate appearances this season, he would be guaranteed a $10 million salary for 2009. Certainly, as he nears his 40th birthday, he could use occasional days off to rest, but it will be interesting to see if the Jays intentionally try to keep him from reaching that plate-appearance mark and how he would respond to such action.
March 20, 2008
Frank Thomas had a tough day at the plate against the Yankees on Thursday as he only went 1-for-4 with a strikeout. His spring average now sits at .088 and hopefully he can end spring training on a high note.
February 26, 2008
Frank Thomas was a late scratch for Tuesday's intrasquad scrimmage due to a blistered hand, according to the Toronto Globe and Mail. Apparently, Thomas was less concerned with the blister and more concerned about his wife, who may have broken an ankle while jogging. Regardless if why he skipped the contest, he should be back in the mix soon.
