August 25, 2008
Julio Lugo is scheduled for an MRI today in Boston, according to the Boston Globe. He is on the DL with a strained left quad.

Our View:The team has yet to disclose the severity of his ailment, but should be able to do so following the MRI.
August 20, 2008
Red Sox shortstop Julio Lugo's hope of an early September return took a considerable blow on Wednesday, when he pulled his left quadriceps during some afternoon running, according to MLB.com.

Our View:Lugo severely strained the quad on July 11 while running out a grounder and had recently made significant progress. On Monday, Lugo took batting practice for the first time since suffering the injury and even speculated he could go on a Minor League rehab assignment at some point next week. The Red Sox are not reporting how serious this new injury may be, but when we get that update, we'll pass it along to you.
August 19, 2008
Julio Lugo continues to make positive progress as he returns from a tear in his left quad. Manager Terry Francona informs the Providence Journal that the optimistic timetable has Lugo beginning a minor league rehab assignment within the next week.

Our View:With Jed Lowrie hitting well, there's no guarantee that Lugo will get his job back when he is healthy. It sounds like September 1 would be roughly the earliest we might see Julio back in the bigs.
August 18, 2008
Julio Lugo was able to take some swings in the batting cage Monday for the first time since severely straining his left quad on July 11, according to MLB.com. "It feels good," said Lugo. "It took me a little [to get to this point]. I was stiff and hurting. Right now, I'm not feeling any pain. It feels good to be back in the hitting motion."

Our View:Lugo thinks he could go on a rehab assignment in about a week, and a Sept. 1 return date is realistic.
August 18, 2008
Julio Lugo is progressing well from his quad injury, according to the Providence Journal. He was sprinting in the outfield at Camden Yards before Monday's game and was also scheduled to take batting practice for the first time since injuring his leg on July 12. "He's done a pretty good job," said manager Terry Francona. "He had a pretty good tear. He did it up pretty good and he's worked hard."

Our View:Lugo still probably won't be back before September, and with the way Jed Lowrie has played, they won't rush him back.
August 13, 2008
Julio Lugo is making progress in his recovery from a strained left quad, but the Boston Herald states that he is unlikely to return before September.

Our View:Lugo will need a lengthy rehab assignment in the minors prior to being activated from the DL. Jed Lowrie will continue to fill in at shortstop.
August 12, 2008
Boston infielder Julio Lugo is on the road to recover from his strained left quad and has begun taking grounders and getting on the field, according to the Boston Globe.

Our View:There is still no timetable for Lugo's return, but it sounds like he will be back sooner rather than later. His speed makes him a decent play in AL-only leagues.
August 2, 2008
The Providence Journal indicates that Julio Lugo is running again for the first time since straining his left quad. He said, "It feels good. It's coming along."

Our View:If he continues to progress, he will begin a minor-league rehab soon. He could return to Boston at some point in mid-August.
July 14, 2008
Julio Lugo, who could miss 4-6 weeks due to his strained left quad, is expected to begin rehabbing after the break, according to the Boston Globe.

Our View:Alex Cora and Jed Lowrie will share the workload at shortstop in a platoon until Lugo returns.
July 12, 2008
Updating an earlier report, the Red Sox are now reporting that injured shortstop Julio Lugo will miss between 4 and 6 weeks of action, suffering a severe quad tear, according to the Providence Journal.

Our View:He suffered the injury in the bottom of the ninth inning against the Orioles Friday night at Fenway Park. Lugo was attempting to beat out a base hit when he felt a "pop" and after he crossed the first-base bag, he was in obvious pain as he lay on the ground. After the game a team doctor told him it was a tear, but the shortstop didn't believe it, so he had an MRI taken this morning that confirmed the bad news. As a result, Jed Lowrie has been recalled from Pawtucket.
July 12, 2008
Julio Lugo has been placed on the 15-day DL due to his strained right quad, according to the AP.

Our View:Jed Lowrie will start tonight's game against Baltimore in his place at shortstop, and should remain active with the club until Lugo returns to action.
July 12, 2008
Updating a previous report, Julio Lugo is scheduled for an MRI on his injured right quad Saturday, according to the Boston Globe. Lugo said, "I'm real worried. Because I know it wasn't something that just pulled, when you pull a muscle. I felt something that popped, and that's what worries me."

Our View:Jed Lowrie was recalled as a possible replacement for Lugo in case he needs to spend time on the DL. We will keep you posted on Lugo's status.
July 12, 2008
Julio Lugo sustained a left quad injury while beating out a base hit during Friday night action, according to the Providence Journal. Manager Terry Francona said, "I think he did it pretty good. We’ll get him looked at today but I think there’s a chance that he just didn’t strain this."

Our View:Altough the team is yet to make an announcement, it is likely he suffered a slight tear, which will require a trip to the DL.
July 9, 2008
Julio Lugo went 2-for-4 and stole his 12th base of the season in the Red Sox rout of the Minnesota Twins on Wednesday afternoon.

Our View:Lugo has 12 steals in 16 attempts and is slowly beginning to warm up at the plate. His batting average has climbed to .267 for the season.
June 21, 2008
Julio Lugo made two more errors in Friday's loss to the Cardinals and will ride the pine today, according to the Providence Journal. Alex Cora will get the start at shortstop.

Our View:Lugo is hitting a favorable .278, but continues to irk the club with 16 errors, which is the most by any American League shortstop.
June 20, 2008
Julio Lugo Went 1-for-2 with two RBI on Friday night in part because of his first home run of the year off of Kyle Lohse.

Our View:Lugo now has a hit in 5-straight games as he continues to provide a decent bat toward the end of the Sox lineup. He only has nine steals after swiping 33 bags last season, so his owners are certainly hopeful that the second half will offer more than a hollow .278 average.
June 14, 2008
Julio Lugo was a late scratch on Saturday afternoon due to an upset stomach, the Boston Globe reports. Alex Cora will start in his place.

Our View:Don't they have any Pepto Bismol in the visiting clubhouse at the Great American Ball Park?
May 16, 2008
Julio Lugo is back in the lineup for the Red Sox on Friday after missing a few games due to a minor concussion, according to the Providence Journal.

Our View:The Sox are a better offensive team with Lugo in the lineup flashing his speed, though how in the world he has scored only 10 runs in 35 games is beyond us.
May 14, 2008
Julio Lugo is out again on Wednesday due to a concussion, and he will be examined by team doctors in Boston on Thursday, the Boston Globe reports. Alex Cora is starting in his place.

Our View:We hope this is a case of the Sox being overly protective and not something where the symptoms aren't going away as hoped.
May 13, 2008
Julio Lugo will miss at least one more game on Tuesday due to a mild concussion leaving Alex Cora to make the start, according to the Providence Journal.

Our View:The team hopes to have Lugo back any day now, and while they don't lose much on defense with Cora, their offense certainly could use Lugo's speed.
May 12, 2008
Julio Lugo's CT scan came back negative, according to the Boston Globe. Manager Terry Francona noted that doesn't necessarily mean the shortstop doesn't have a concussion, it just means that if he has one, it's not a particularly bad one. Francona added, "His eyes were kind of glassy, glazed over a little bit yesterday. He certainly looks a lot clearer today."

Our View:Lugo will have to be cleared by the team's medical staff to return to the field.
May 11, 2008
Julio Lugo did not play on Saturday due to a mild concussion. He was kicked in the head during Friday's win over the Twins and felt dizzy on Saturday morning, the Boston Globe reports. Jed Lowrie started in his place.

Our View:Lugo is presumably day-to-day at this point, and we'll update his status when more is known.
April 21, 2008
Julio Lugo went 4-for-4 with a double, two runs, an RBI, a walk, and a steal in Monday's win over the Rangers.

Our View:Lugo owns a seven-game hitting streak and has pushed his average up from .238 to .314 during that span. He'll need to keep hitting if he hopes to keep Jed Lowrie at bay.
April 20, 2008
Boston shortstop Julio Lugo played left field in the ninth inning of Sunday's win over Texas, his first outfield appearance with the Red Sox and first since August 2006 with the Dodgers.

Our View:Lugo has the ability to be a versatile asset for Boston, but his defense has been suspect during April. He leads all American League shortstops in errors this spring, six in total in just 18 games.
April 7, 2008
Julio Lugo had a very rough Sunday. He went 0-for-4 at the plate and committed three errors. Lugo is only 2-for-15 over the last four games and owns four miscues through six games.
March 18, 2008
Julio Lugo played in a minor league game on Tuesday. He went 1-for-4 in the contest, but the fact that he stole a base is a great sign that his back ailment continues to get better. It looks like he should be fine when the regular season gets underway next week.
March 15, 2008
Julio Lugo returned to action on Saturday for the first time since March 2 and went 2-for-3 against the Reds, while scoring a run. That was a great rebound performance and hopefully his back woes are behind him.
March 13, 2008
Red Sox manager Terry Francona told the Boston Globe on Thursday that shortstop Julio Lugo and his back woes, could be ready for game action by Friday or Saturday. Great news for fantasy owners that were able to grab Lugo cheap. Lugo's 2007 numbers were disappointing after a solid 2006 campaign in Tampa Bay.
March 12, 2008
Julio Lugo (back) was able to take some swings in the batting cage on Tuesday, this according to Projo.com. The shortstop also ran and played catch during an afternoon of work. The report notes that Lugo will continue to take it slow, but said he’ll be ready for the trip to Japan.
March 10, 2008
Julio Lugo's injured back will keep him out of action for a least a couple more days and there is growing concern that he will not be ready to go on opening day, this according to MLB.com. "I think when Lugo tried to play that one day, I think he overdid it a little bit and set himself back," manager Terry Francona said. "So we need to sit on it a little bit." Lugo figures to be greatly undervalued this season given this injury and his .237 average last season, but he remains a solid source of SB with an average of 32 bags the past three seasons.
March 8, 2008
The Red Sox have decided to keep Julio Lugo out of action until Monday, at which point he'll be examined again, according to the Boston Globe. Lugo is dealing with some minor back stiffness, and it appears the Sox are just taking it easy on him since it's still early in spring training.
March 7, 2008
Julio Lugo is expected to return to exhibition action on Friday, according to the Boston Herald. "If this was the regular season, I’d be playing," Lugo said. He's just dealing with a minor back ailment that should have no effect on his fantasy draft or auction values.
March 5, 2008
Julio Lugo sat again on Wednesday due to a sore back, the Boston Globe reports. He is day-to-day, and we're not too concerned at this point.
March 4, 2008
Julio Lugo skipped Tuesday's spring game due to a sore back, according to the AP. He's expected back in the mix on Wednesday, so it sounds like nothing to be concerned with.
February 4, 2008
The Red Sox's official website speculates that Julio Lugo could lose playing time to prospect Jed Lowrie at some point this season if Lugo struggles like he did in 2007 (.237-8-73 with 33 steals). Lowrie hit .298-13-70 between Double-A Portland and Triple-A Pawtucket last season while showing tremendous patience at the plate.
