The beleaguered Julio Lugo drove in the game winning run in the 11th inning on Wednesday, as the Red Sox beat the Orioles 6-5 in Baltimore.

Our View:Rumors have abounded that Lugo will be released once Jed Lowrie returns, but the veteran shortstop is still having a decent '09 campaign, batting .301 in 103 at-bats. He is still not a viable fantasy option, though.

The Boston Globe is reporting that the Red Sox may release infielder Julio Lugo when the injured Jed Lowrie returns from the DL. Lugo has played only sparingly in the last two weeks, as Nick Green has been seeing a bulk of the time at shortstop.

Our View:Lugo isn't happy sitting the bench, and the Sox will have plenty of other options in Green and Lowrie after the All-Star break. Expect Lugo to be released, but he should manage to catch on somewhere else.

Julio Lugo is out of the lineup for the third straight game Tuesday, according to the Boston Globe.

Our View:Nick Green is starting at shortstop in his place. Julio Lugo has not been performing well defensively, and skipper Terry Francona likes Green's range. Francona added that Lugo will play, and needs to be patient.

Julio Lugo is out of Saturday's lineup against the Mets, according to the Boston Globe.

Our View:Lugo has been nursing a sore groin, but may be riding the pine as he failed to turn a key double-play in Friday's loss 5-3 loss to the Mets. Nick Green will cover shortstop in his place tonight.

Julio Lugo missed Sunday's loss to Seattle due to a sore groin, but the infielder said that he does not consider the injury serious, according to the Providence Journal.

Our View:Lugo needs periodic rest anyways, as he is still recovering from spring knee surgery. With Nick Green's defense deteriorating, Lugo may find even more regular starts coming his way. If he does, he could be a serviceable shortstop in AL-only formats as he hits in a devastating lineup and currently carries a .333 average.
