Player Notes
September 19, 2008
Mark Kotsay is in a hitting slump, according to the Boston Globe. He only has one hit over his last 23 at-bats (with three walks), and is hitless in his last 14.

Our View:Kotsay should be avoided in the final week of the season with the fantasy championship on the line.
September 8, 2008
Mark Kotsay is slated to start in right field tonight in place of the injured JD Drew, according to the Boston Globe. Jason Bay is slated to roam left field with Coco Crisp penciled in at center field.

Our View:Kotsay has fared well when given a chance to play with Boston, and is worthy of fantasy consideration in AL-only leagues tonight.
September 5, 2008
Mark Kotsay is starting at first base for the injured Kevin Youkilis (back) against the Rangers on Friday. He is also hitting clean up. He has played first just one other time this season.

Our View:Kotsay certainly does not have the pop to hit fourth, but he has done well thus far in six appearances for the Red Sox. He is hitting .333 since moving to Boston.
September 3, 2008
Mark Kotsay hit a two-run triple in the eighth inning Wednesday, helping Boston squeak by the Orioles 5-4.

Our View:As long as he receives consistent playing time, Kotsay should be fairly productive in the middle of Boston's lineup.
August 31, 2008
Mark Kotsay had a tough day for Boston, striking out twice in four at-bats and failing to get a hit in his team's 4-2 loss to Chicago.

Our View:This was Kotsay's first game with Boston that he failed to get a hit, and it had to happen sometime. He remains someone fantasy owners should not rely on, unless he sees consistent at-bats.
August 30, 2008
Mark Kotsay led the Red Sox in Saturday's 8-2 win over the White Sox, as he went 3-for-5 with three RBI. He registered a single and two doubles.

Our View:Kotsay started the game in right field, and will see more at-bats if he continues to perform like he did tonight.
August 28, 2008
It has been a long couple of days for Mark Kotsay but he finally was able to get back on the field for his new team. Kotsay stroked a double in the second inning in his first at-bat as a Red Sox, but ended the day 1-4.

Our View:Kotsay hit his 18th double of the year today and will see some at-bats now that JD Drew is on the DL.
August 28, 2008
Mark Kotsay will get his first start for the Boston Red Sox today. According to the Providence Journal Kotsay will be in the lineup and play right field.

Our View:Kotsay will see some at-bats with JD Drew in the DL. He might be a good option for a bench outfielder.
August 27, 2008
Mark Kotsay will receive a $325,000 bonus for waiving his no-trade clause as he moves from the Braves to the Red Sox, according to FoxSports.com.

Our View:So Kotsay goes from a bad team to one with legitimate World Series hopes and gets an extra $325,000 along the way. All in all, seems like a pretty good move, though his fantasy status will take a bit of a hit as he will not be an everyday player.
August 26, 2008
The Red Sox have acquired Mark Kotsay from the Braves, according to Yahoo Sports. The deal is pending a physical. Atlanta will receive an unnamed minor league pitcher in return.

Our View:The Sox were looking for some outfield help with J.D. Drew on the DL. Kotsay won't start on a regular basis.
August 26, 2008
The Red Sox are on the verge of acquiring Mark Kotsay from the Braves, according to ESPN.com.

Our View:Kotsay would give the Sox some insurance in the outfield with J.D Drew on the DL.
August 24, 2008
Baseball insider Ken Rosenthal reports the Brewers and Red Sox are both showing interest in Mark Kotsay , according to MLBTradeRumors.com.

Our View:The Brewers would only pursue a trade if Ryan Braun's ribcage injury worsens, and so far he looks more than fine. The Sox made a play for lefty-hitting Brian Giles before Giles vetoed the deal, so it makes sense that they'd exert similar effort toward Kotsay. Even more so now that J.D. Drew has a herniated disc.
August 14, 2008
Braves outfielder Mark Kotsay went 5-for-5 while hitting for the cycle in the Braves 11-6 loss to the Cubs. He also scored a run and drove two in.

Our View:Kotsay saw his August batting average rise to .366. He doesn't hit for enough power or drive in enough runs for fantasy owners, but this was an impressive evening nonetheless.
July 1, 2008
Mark Kotsay went 0-for-4 with a strikeout, while leaving four men on base, in Tuesday's 8-3 loss to the Phillies.

Our View:This was his first game back from the DL, and he started in center field. Fantasy owners should wait until he gets back on track before considering him for starting duty again.
July 1, 2008
Atlanta outfielder Mark Kotsay has been activated from the 15-day disabled list and will be in the starting lineup this evening as the Braves face the Phillies, according to MLB.com.

Our View:The veteran center fielder had been sidelined since May 25th with a lower back strain. During a five-game minor league rehab assignment with Double-A Mississippi, Kotsay recorded six hits in 18 at-bats. However, he was able to swing and field his position without any trouble or discomfort and is ready to get back into action.
June 29, 2008
Mark Kotsay will end his Minor League rehab assignment with Double-A Mississippi on Sunday and is expected back in the Braves' lineup on Tuesday when they battle the Phillies, according to MLB.com. Kotsay is recovering from lower back soreness.

Our View:When Kotsay returns, Gregor Blanco could move to left field and continue his role as the Braves' leadoff hitter. Brandon Jones could be sent to Triple-A to make room for Kotsay when he is activated.
June 27, 2008
The Braves, who left Atlanta on Thursday only four games out of first place in the National League East, are hoping to see the return of several of their injued this weekend. Among position players, the Braves were missing third baseman Chipper Jones, center fielder Mark Kotsay, left fielder Matt Diaz and shortstop Yunel Escobar from the starting lineup on Wednesday.

Our View:Throw Omar Infante (hamstring) into the mix and the Braves are a mess.
June 25, 2008
Mark Kotsay is expected to return to the Braves next Tuesday for their series against the Phillies, reports MLB.com.

Our View:This is a relief for the Braves who have endured multiple injuries to their offense recently. Look for Kotsay to resume everyday outfield activities once he returns.
June 23, 2008
Mark Kotsay will begin a minor league rehab assignment Tuesday with Double-A Mississippi, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. If all goes well, he could be activated next week when the Braves begin a homestand. He is recovering from a back injury.

Our View:Kotsay's progress had stalled, but he's made significant strides over the last week, as he's been able to take batting practice and run and throw.
June 20, 2008
Mark Kotsay, out with an ailing back, will look to return to action next week after taking 30 swings in the batting cage on Friday, according to MLB.com. Of course, that could change at any moment. "There's nothing definite with this whole procedure and plan," Kotsay said.

Our View:Kotsay was hitting near .300 when he was injured, providing the Braves with great defense and a reliable bat at the top of the order. Even when active, he isn't worth much of a look unless you play in a very deep league.
June 16, 2008
Mark Kotsay sprinted in the outfield on Sunday and was pleased with the progress in his ailing lower back, according to MLB.com. He will test the back again on Tuesday and could begin swinging a bat on Wednesday or Thursday.

Our View:This is favorable news and he is seemingly not too far from returning to the Braves.
June 7, 2008
Mark Kotsay continues to be patient but proactive in his rehab with his injured back, according to MLB.com. "It's one of those things that I've dealt with," Kotsay said. "There's no timetable as to when it will respond to the medicine. But hopefully, it will be sooner rather than later."

Our View:Kotsay has been out since May 25th, and up until this point he hasn't even swung a bat as he has been focusing instead on exercises to strengthen his back. He appears to be at least a couple of weeks away from returning to action.
June 4, 2008
Mark Kotsay stated on Tuesday that his back spasms have not gotten better in nine days and there remains no timetable for his return to action, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Kotsay said, "It's day-to-day. We're doing all the necessary treatments, trying to get me back as soon as possible. It's a mental grind. I'm sure everybody's wondering what's going on."

Our View:Kotsay was hitting .294 with four homers, 21 RBI, and 23 runs scored over 47 games. Gregor Blanco will continue to cover for Kotsay in the Braves' outfield.
May 30, 2008
The Braves placed Mark Kotsay (back) on the 15-day disabled list and recalled Josh Anderson from Triple-A Richmond on Friday. Anderson will be active when the Braves begin a three-game series against the Reds at Cinergy Field, this according to the team website.

Our View:Kotsay has missed the last four games with tightness in his back.
May 29, 2008
Mark Kotsay stated on Wednesday that his ailing back has improved and he expects to avoid the DL, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Kotsay felt good enough to hit flyballs in the outfield during batting practice, and stated, "I've made a lot of progress from yesterday to today. I'll go out and do some baseball stuff to see how I feel and go from there. I think I'm moving in the right direction with this and staying away from something long-term."

Our View:Kotsay has battled back issues in 2007, but it looks like he won't land on the shelf this time. He is hitting .294 this season, with four homers and 21 RBI, and is enjoying a solid season by his standards.
May 27, 2008
Mark Kotsay's back with likely keep him out of the lineup for a few more days, and it's possible a DL stint could be in his future, according to MLB.com. "We're going to see how he is day-to-day," manager Bobby Cox said Tuesday. "He won't be available for anything, tonight anyhow."

Our View:Kotsay missed over half of last season with back problems, and the back has flared up on him again. It appears we could see a lot more Gregor Blanco in our future.
May 26, 2008
Mark Kotsay was scratched from Monday's lineup due to a stiff back, according to MLB.com. Kotsay said, "We knew there'd be days where I'd have to make a decision and take myself out of the lineup if I'm too sore, and today is one of those days where I don't think I should push it."

Our View:The ailment may have been caused by the near-four-hour game on Sunday. He will receive treatment on Monday and expects to be ready for Tuesday's contest against Milwaukee. Kotsay played in 47 of 51 games for Atlanta this season, and was due for a game off. Gregor Blanco started in his place in center field.
May 13, 2008
Mark Kotsay went 0-for-3 but he scored two runs for the Braves.

Our View:Kotsay is hitting .342 with nine runs scored in 10 May games forcing himself back into all NL Only fantasy lineups.
May 6, 2008
Atlanta OF Mark Kotsay put forth a strong night at the plate in support of the 5-3 win over San Diego. Kotsay went 2-for-4, hitting his 3rd home run of the season to total two RBIs with two runs scored.

Our View:This is Kotsay's seventh consecutive game with a hit, a span in which he has gone a combined 13-for-29 at the plate.
April 30, 2008
Mark Kotsay went 3-for-5 on Wednesday with an RBI to push his average up to .286.

Our View:Kotsay continues to be a physical risk, but he does have hits in 10 of his last 11 games as he continues to hold on to the centerfield spot in the Braves outfield despite having just nine runs and eight RBI in 25 games.
February 16, 2008

January 14, 2008
The Braves have completed their trade with the A's for center fielder Mark Kotsay. Oakland will receive reliever Joey Devine and minor league pitcher Jamie Richmond in the deal. Kotsay is coming off an injury-plagued 2007 season in which he hit just .214 with one homer in 206 at-bats.
January 12, 2008
Atlanta has agreed in principle to send Joey Devine to the A's in exchange for Mark Kotsay, who is expected to undergo a physical Monday, the Braves official site reports. If Kotsay passes the exam, the trade could be announced later that afternoon.
