Player Notes
September 15, 2008
Journeyman Brian Moehler (11-6, 4.16) is 2-1 with a 3.00 ERA in six starts versus Chicago and 1-1 with a 2.12 ERA in three this season. Moehler has been either good or bad this year. There has been little in between. In his 18 starts since the beginning of June he has allowed one or fewer earned runs eight times -- and four or more runs eight times.

Our View:Moehler depends on his early inning success. He's only a two-pitch pitcher that is much more suited for a long relief role.
September 10, 2008
Brian Moehler improved to 11-6 on Wednesday night as he held the Pirates to just two runs in six innings of work. Moehler didn't strike out a batter but he also didn't walk one while allowing just five hits.

Our View:Moehler is 6-2 since the All-Star break as he continues to do his best Livan Hernandez impersonation, that is back when he was good an not the batting practice pitcher that batters fatten their batting average on now. Moehler allows a lot of hits, almost 10 per nine innings, and he barely strikes out five per nine, so there are bound to be some ups an downs along the way.
August 30, 2008
Brian Moehler gave up three earned runs on seven hits over six innings in Saturday's 8-5 win over the Cardinals, with one walk and six strikeouts.

Our View:The 36-year-old hurler, who just signed an extension with the club, improves to 10-5 for the season, and is 5-1 since the All-Star break.
August 29, 2008
Brian Moehler has received a contract extension and will make $2.3 million plus bonuses, and his deal also includes a mutual option for 2010, according to the AP.

Our View:The 36-year-old hurler is 9-5 with a 3.99 ERA over 25 games (20 starts) for the Astros this season, and is 4-1 since the All-Star break.
August 19, 2008
Houston RHP Brian Moehler wasn't especially dominant tonight, but he put the Brewers in a loss with an efficient outing off the mounth. Moehler pitched 5 1/3 innings, allowing two runs (only one earned) on nine hits with one walk and four strikeouts.

Our View:Moehler has been strong, now standing at 3-0 in four starts through August. The one walk surrendered tonight is his first since July 29th, also giving up just one homer along that same span.
August 9, 2008
Astros RHP Brian Moehler was once again working as a force of reckoning for Houston this evening, supporting his team's 3-1 win over the Reds with a strong performance off the mound. Moehler pitched seven innings, allowing just one run on five hits with no walks and three strikeouts.

Our View:Moehler moves to 8-4 on the season, touting four wins over his last six starts with three consecutive wins heading forward. In his last three starts, he's allowed a combined total of three earned runs over 20 2/3 innings.
July 29, 2008
Brian Moehler got 26 outs, leaving him one shy of a complete game, as the Astros took down the Reds 6-2. Moehler went 8.2 innings, allowing two earned runs on seven hits.

Our View:Moehler has been alternating good and bad performances his last few times out, so be wary of what may happen his next time out.
July 23, 2008
Brian Moehler let in six runs, five earned, in just 2.1 innings against the Pirates on Wednesday.

Our View:Moehler has a 6.33 ERA over his last five outings during which time he has eight walks and 12 K in 21.1 IP. Numbers like that are best left on waivers.

The Astros team website reports that right-hander Brian Moehler will receive the first start after the All Star break. "Obviously, we all want Roy starting that game, because he's the ace of the staff," Moehler said. "It's just unfortunate that he's injured right now." Moehler will be followed in the rotation by Wandy Rodriguez and Brandon Backe in a three-game series with the Chicago Cubs. After the series with the Cubs the rotation is a question mark. The fourth spot will likely go to Runelvys Hernandez, who would be called up from Triple-A Round Rock. Oswalt could be ready to start Tuesday, the fifth spot in the rotation after the break, but that won't be known until next weekend. "He won't do any throwing until after the break," manager Cecil Cooper said. "There's no need."

Our View: Cooper said that Moehler's season has been a success by every measurement. That's true to a degree, but after the fifth inning Moehler's peripherals are horrible making him a better option out of the bullpen.
July 8, 2008
Brian Moehler was dealing with a case of pink eye on Monday, according to the Houston Chronicle. Moehler said, "I woke up with it Sunday, and my wife knew right away it was pink eye. My kids get it a lot. Everybody just has to wash their hands a lot."

Our View:It should not keep him out of action long, and he should not be in jeopardy of missing his next start.
July 4, 2008
Brian Moehler surrendered five earned runs on six hits over six innings in Friday's 6-2 loss to the Braves in Atlanta, with three walks and one strikeout.

Our View:Tonight's loss snaps a streak of three-straight starts in which he only allowed one earned run. He is still worth consideration for the bottom half of your rotation in NL-only leagues.
June 29, 2008
Brian Moehler went pitch-for-pitch with Josh Beckett on Sunday afternoon. The veteran held the Red Sox to one run over 5.2 innings. Moehler allowed seven hits, walked three, and struck out five. He earned a no-decision, but the Astros eventually won 3-2.

Our View:Okay, so Moehler didn't last as long as Beckett, but it was a nice outing nonetheless. Moehler has allowed only one run in each of his last three starts and is worth trusting in NL-only formats. We're not ready to use him in mixed leagues.
June 18, 2008
Brian Moehler was good on Wednesday night in Baltimore. After allowing seven runs on seven hits in his last outing against the Brewers, the right-handed journeyman working 6.1 innings allowing one run on five hits, walking two and striking out four in a no-decision.

Our View:Moehler was not expected to be in the starting rotation when the Astros broke spring training, and the veteran is much better serving in long relief. The longer Moehler is in the game the more dramatically his batting average against climbs.
May 27, 2008
Brian Moehler has retained his spot in the starting rotation with four strong starts (2-1, 3.43 ERA, 1.33 WHIP in 21 innings). Chris Sampson will be demoted to the bullpen when Wandy Rodriguez is activated from the DL. "I'm not going to sit here and lie to you and say I'm not happy, because I am," Moehler said. "At the same time, I told Coop I'd be happy to relieve as well. My goal is to help get this team in the playoffs. This is my 11th year and I haven't experienced that yet."

Our View:Moehler should be avoided in all leagues despite his strong showing of late. His track record shows he simply won't keep it up.
May 19, 2008
Brian Moehler needed 95 pitches to hold the Cubs to three runs over five innings as he fell to 1-1 on the year.

Our View:Moehler continues to allow a boatload of hits, 31 in just 22.2 IP, and with just 11 K in that time it's clear that he needs exquisite control to do any better than he did on this night.
May 15, 2008
Houston RHP Brian Moehler lasted just five innings in giving up three runs (all earned) on eight hits, walking none and striking out two.

Our View:His Astros got the 6-3 win, cut the offense failed to emerge when Moehler was on the mound, thus he suffers the no decision.
May 11, 2008
Brian Moehler will get another start. He will work Wednesday against the Giants after tossing five scoreless innings versus the Dodgers on Friday. "I think he earned the right to do that," manager Cecil Cooper tells the Houston Chronicle. "He earned that opportunity."

Our View:Moehler is simply filling in the rotation due to injuries, and we have no reason to think the 36-year-old right-hander has turned into a reliable option.
May 10, 2008
Brian Moehler pitched five scoreless innings helping the Houston Astros to a 7-1 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Friday night. The 36-year-old Moehler, filling in for the injured Wandy Rodriguez, allowed five hits and a walk while striking out five.

Our View:He has spent the majority of his big league career as a starter, though has been used exclusively in relief since rejoining the club in January 2007. His fantasy value is minimal, even in NL-only formats.
May 7, 2008
Houston RHP Brian Moehler completed his second simulated game today as he prepares to return to the mound as the Astros' starting pitcher on Friday, according to MLB.com.

Our View:Moehler is scheduled to replace Wandy Rodriguez in the rotation while the Houston lefty continues his effort to rehab from a groin injury, a start that will mark Moehler's first since September of 2006. Moehler also completed a simulated outing on Saturday, though Moehler has seen just five opportunities to pitch in league games this season. The team expects Rodriguez to miss at least two starts beyond Friday.
May 4, 2008
Long reliever Brian Moehler threw a simulated game on Saturday and is preparing for the possibility of making a spot start in place of the injured Wandy Rodriguez, according to the Houston Chronicle. Rodriguez continues to feel discomfort in his ailing groin muscle, and if he isn't ready by Friday, a decision will be made. Manager Cecil Cooper said, "Brian Moehler threw kind of a simulated game. We just wanted to line him up in case he might have to be the guy here if we don't make any kind of move. He'd be the guy that would probably take a start. He's our long guy and he hasn't pitched a whole lot here recently, so it's a chance to get him the work and kind of line him up, so to speak, so if you need him to take that start maybe he's the guy that could potentially get it."

Our View:Moehler holds a poor 1.83 WHIP and has allowed six runs and 11 hits over 7.2 innings this season, and wouldn't make a favorable fantasy prospect if the reliever gets called into action for a spot start.
March 21, 2008
The main candidates for the final spot in the Astros rotation are Woody Williams, Jack Cassel and Chris Sampson, but Brian Moehler has thrown his name into the hat with a solid spring. "He's making a strong bid to be on our team," manager Cecil Cooper said on MLB.com. "I think at any time we need to, we can stretch him to three or four [innings] if we need to." Moehler is still considered a longshot for the rotation, but he could make the team as a long reliever that could be called upon when the team needs a spot starter. Either way, he's not going to make any noise in fantasy.
January 30, 2008
Brian Moehler agreed to a minor-league deal with the Astros Tuesday. The veteran held a 4.07 ERA in 42 games for the 'Stros last year, and he'll attempt to win a job as a swingman again this season.
