Seattle right-hander Miguel Batista made his first start since August 4th and gave up just one run on five hits in six innings while striking out three, but Batista's re-entry into the rotation appears to be short-lived, according to MLB.com. If the rotation went in order, his next start would have been on Sunday against Cleveland -- the day manager Jim Riggleman has designated starter Carlos Silva's return to the rotation after spending two weeks on the disabled list with right triceps tendinitis. "Just the way the timing of it works out, it looks like he won't start because we've got an off-day Thursday, and [Jarrod] Washburn will pitch on an extra day's rest as it is," Riggleman said on Tuesday. "Felix [Hernandez] will pitch [Saturday], and Silva will pitch Sunday ... so we kind of run out of days there with that off-day."

Our View:Riggelman suggested there could be a quick return to starting work for Bautista should another arm fall to injury or the need arise to go to him again. Riggleman also addressed one other rotation topic on Tuesday, when he answered a question about scheduling starts for Brandon Morrow, who has been in Triple-A Tacoma transitioning from a reliever into a starter. He is thinking the series versus New York in early September could be the target time for such a move, but nothing is set in stone.

Miguel Batista has been dropped from the Mariners' starting rotation and will not make his scheduled start on Saturday, according to the Seattle Post-Intelligencer.

Our View:He lasted just three innings in his last start Monday, and was the 14th time in 19 starts that he failed to reach six innings. Over 94 innings, he holds a dismal 6.80 ERA and 1.95 WHIP. The team did not make a decision, but the source indicates that the most likely candidate to start Saturday is former reliever Ryan Rowland-Smith.
July 30, 2008
Seattle RHP Miguel Batista put a strong outing on the mound tonight but the Mariners failed to produce the offense needed for a win, falling 4-3 to the Rangers. Batista pitched six innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on seven hits with two walks and three strikeouts.

Our View:Batista is seeing more work as a reliever in recent weeks than as a starter, and his work hasn't offered fantasy owners too many rewards this season. His status, or lack thereof, moving forward remains a question, but we expect you could see him continue to bounce between relief stints and starts the rest of the way.
July 25, 2008
Miguel Batista threw 5.1 innings, allowing just two runs on five hits, and he lowered his ERA from 6.89 to 6.67.

Our View:Batista has been awful this season, as his ERA would suggest, and should be on fantasy teams only if you are vying for last place.
July 19, 2008
Miguel Batista was blasted for eight runs on seven hits and a walk in just two innings Saturday.

Our View:Batista came out of his last outing with a groin injury, so perhaps it was still bothering him a bit. Or it could just be that Miguel is simply not very good.
July 11, 2008
Miguel Batista was feeling better on Thursday after being forced out of Wednesday's start after only 23 pitches due to a strained right groin, according to the Seattle Post-Intelligencer.

Our View:Batista is not likely to pitch before the All-Star break, but the Mariners expect him to be ready to return to the rotation after the break.
July 8, 2008
Miguel Batista is officially slated to start on Wednesday in place of Erik Bedard, according to the Seattle Post-Intelligencer. Manager Jim Riggleman said, "The way Miguel aired it out against the Tigers in relief, that's why I want to see him back in the rotation. He was throwing hard and with location. Now we might not see exactly that, not when he's going to try to pitch deep into the game, but as long as he's in command of the strike zone, that's what we want."

Our View:Batista was bumped from the rotation a few weeks ago, and will be looking to redeem himself on Wednesday.
July 6, 2008
Miguel Batista is expected to start in place of Erik Bedard on Wednesday.

Our View:Bedard is day-to-day with a sore shoulder. Batista has started 14 games this season but has been mostly unsuccessful. He will be looking for redemption in this start that summons him from the bullpen.
June 26, 2008
Miguel Batista stated that his back was bothering him after getting rocked for four earned runs against the Mets on Wednesday, according to the Tacoma News Tribune. He added, "I have to make sure I get myself healthy before I go out there again, because I’m the only guy trying to pitch through it. Everybody else, every time they feel pain, they go on the DL, or they take a rest, and I haven’t."

Our View:His location on his pitches was compromised, as he also surrendered five walks (over 2.2 innings) against the Mets on Wednesday. A trip to the DL might be a sensible move right now, but we will have to wait and see what the Mariners decide to do with him.
June 25, 2008
After a brief stay in the bullpen, Miguel Batista returned to the starting rotation on Wednesday with predictably poor results as he was beat around the yard in his 10th loss. Batista allowed eight runs, though only four were earned, in the loss.

Our View:For a pitcher with such solid stuff, it's just amazing at how poor this guy can pitch sometimes. There is no reason to consider him for a fantasy roster at the moment.
June 23, 2008
Miguel Batista will start on Wednesday in place of Erik Bedard, not Tuesday as previously reported, according to the Tacoma News Tribune. Baitisa threw on the side Monday.

Our View:R.A. Dickey will stay in his original spot on Tuesday.
June 23, 2008
Miguel Batista is expected to start on Tuesday, with R.A. Dickey moving back a day to start in place of the injured Erik Bedard on Wednesday, according to the Seattle Times.

Our View:Batisita had been demoted to a relief role. This could just be a spot start, as Bedard, at this point, isn't expected to land on the DL.
June 21, 2008
Miguel Batista failed to record an out in a save attempt Saturday, allowing two runs on two hits and two walks.

Our View:With J.J. Putz and Brandon Morrow ailing, Batista looks to be in line for saves, or does he? We'll have to see if this outing changes the coaching staff's minds.
June 20, 2008
With the game well out of reach, Miguel Batista worked a scoreless ninth inning for the Mariners.

Our View:With Brendan Morrow not available Batista worked the final inning in a lopsided game, perhaps signaling that he could pick up a save chance or two until Morrow is ready to resume the closing duties he inherited from J.J. Putz.
June 12, 2008
Miguel Batista will be removed from the rotation and replaced by knuckleballer R.A. Dickey, according to MLB.com. "We're trying to line up our ducks the best way we can to protect ourselves," manager John McLaren said of the switch. "[Batista and Dickey] will switch roles until we get J.J. [Putz] back."

Our View:With Putz out at least through the weekend, the team made the decision that it would be better to have the fastball/slider stuff of Bautista in the pen with the fluttering knuckleball of Dickey in the rotation.
June 1, 2008
Miguel Batista allowed three runs on five hits, walked four and struck out two in 5.1 innings of work Sunday.

Our View:The Seattle right-hander has been up and down the entire season, mostly down. Batista carried a heavy 5.98 ERA and 1.87 WHIP into today's game.
May 28, 2008
Seattle RHP Miguel Batista got the Mariners off on the right foot and reliever J.J. Putz wrapped it up as they emerged with the 4-3 victory over the Boston Red Sox. Batista went seven innings to surrender three runs (two earned) on five hits, walking three and striking out two. However, the one mistake to Manny Ramirez let the win fall to Putz, pitching the final inning to allow one hit, two ground outs, and a fly out.

Our View:Batista could use the win, remaining at 3-6 on the season. However, Putz is now 2-2 with seven saves thus far.
May 23, 2008
The Mariners may opt to skip Miguel Batista's next turn in the rotation, the Seattle Times reports. Jarrod Washburn is also a candidate. "I've been battling a lot of stuff since spring training," Batista explains. "My back, my foot, my back. And then I had a dead arm. It's hard to get everything going when you're not completely healthy."

Our View:If the Mariners had any live arms knocking down the Triple-A door, Batista's job would probably be in jeopardy.
May 22, 2008
Miguel Batista has been dealt his sixth loss of the season on Thursday, as Seattle fell to Detroit 9-2. Batista was rocked for five runs on seven hits over a mere three innings, with one walk and two strikeouts.

Our View:Batista is now 3-6 over 10 starts, with a 6.47 ERA. He should not be anywhere near your fantasy rotation.
May 17, 2008
Miguel Batista lost his fifth game of the season on Friday, as San Diego defeated Seattle 6-4. Batista was lit up for six runs on nine hits over 5.1 innings, with three walks and one strikeout.

Our View:That was his fifth loss in nine starts, and his nagging foot injury has really hindered his game. His ERA climbed to 6.11, with a terrible 1.93 WHIP.
May 11, 2008
Miguel Batista allowed three runs on 10 hits, walked three and struck out six on a season-high 115 pitches. Batista somehow hung on long enough to record his third win of the season.

Our View:Batista has been suffering from a foot injury that has nagged him since last year and once again the right-hander struggled with his command.
May 9, 2008
Miguel Batista is being hindered by pain in his push-off foot that dates back to last season, according to the Seattle Times. The ailment relates to a tendon in his foot that becomes inflamed if he leans too far forward on his toes and causes them to rub together. The pain becomes so intense that Batista will often take his shoes off in the dugout between innings and walk around barefoot because it puts less pressure on his toes than when he's wearing shoes. Batista has also often been spotted limping around the clubhouse after he pitches. He is battling a groin problem as well.

Our View:Batista is struggling as he lost four of seven starts, and holds a 5.66 ERA and 1.80 WHIP over 35 innings, with 24 walks. He is capable of good numbers, but should be left on your bench until he can shake his injuries.
May 6, 2008
Miguel Batista delivered an awful performance on Tuesday night. He allowed three hits and six runs over 2.1 innings against the Rangers. Batista was his own worst enemy, as he walked six batters and threw only 45 of his 85 pitches for strikes.

Our View:Over his last four starts, Batista has delivered two gems and two major duds. It's maddening. Fantasy owners should avoid him if they possibly can.
May 1, 2008
Miguel Batista struck out six Indians while allowing just one run over seven innings to pick up a no-decision.

Our View:After allowing four earned runs in three straight starts, Bautista has now allowed four runs in his last three appearances (2.30 ERA). A versatile hurler, Batista is nothing more than a backend rotation option.
April 26, 2008
Miguel Batista left Friday's game with a mild right groin strain, according to the AP. The 37-year-old Batista will undergo a further examination on Saturday. He had complained of tightness in his lower back and hip throughout spring training.

Our View:Batista, who won a team-high 16 games last season, is the fourth Mariners' pitcher to suffer an injury in the first month of the season and the third in as many days. He was 2-3 with a 1.83 WHIP, and won't be missed if he is out of action.
April 21, 2008
Miguel Batista pitched by far his best game of the season on Sunday, but he is being coy about his success. "I might have found something that I wish I might have found years ago in my career," he tells the Seattle Times. "I don't know if I'm right yet. It's going to take me at least four or five more starts to figure out if it's going to be able to work as good as I believe it might work." Batista tossed 7.2 scoreless innings and struck out eight despite not feeling his best.

Our View:Oooh, what could it be? Did the 36-year-old hurler finally figure out that location is as important as velocity? We're not ready to buy into Batista suddenly turning into a more effective pitcher.
April 20, 2008
Miguel Batista scattered eight hits over 7.2 scoreless innings, struck out eight and walked one -- lowering his ERA from 6.35 to 4.38 in Sunday's win over the Angels. The 37-year-old right-hander did not allow a runner past second base, and six of the hits he gave up came with two out.

Our View:Batista gained confidence with each inning and the early four runs the Seattle offense scored allowed him to pitch his game.
April 15, 2008
Miguel Batista struggled through five innings, allowing seven hits and four runs in his first win of the season.

Our View:The right-hander walked two and struck out only one in the win. Batista's fantasy value rests in deep AL-only formats.
April 10, 2008
Miguel Batista has fallen to 0-2 for the season as he allowed four runs on eight hits over six innings, with three walks and four strikeouts, as Seattle fell to Tampa Bay 7-0 on Thursday. His back was bothering him through spring training, and could be attributed to his poor start.
March 21, 2008
Miguel Batista pitched well for six inning Thursday, giving up three runs on seven hits and a walk while striking out seven, but he admitted Friday and his back was still bothering him, according to the Seattle Times. Trainer Rick Griffin is trying to figure out ways the staff can help Batista get over the problem. It sounds as if Batista would be able to pitch through the problem, but is could always get worse and/or affect his performance. Keep an eye on his progress.
March 9, 2008
Miguel Batista lost command of his pitches on Sunday as he allowed two runs on four hits over three innings, while walking three. He was battling a sore back, which was the likely culprit of his pitching woes.
March 4, 2008
Pitcher Miguel Batista left today’s Cactus League game against the Oakland Athletics with what is being described as a sore back, according to ESPN. He surrendered two runs and two hits in three innings before leaving the game after stiffness settled in during his time on the bench. However, Batista retired the top of the A’s order in the third, a positive sign for the Seattle hurler looking forward.
February 24, 2008
Miguel Batista is expected to be the Mariners' No. 5 starter. However, while manager John McLaren said he knows the order of his rotation, he has yet to pass that information on to his pitchers, according to the Seattle Times. The rotation will have Felix Hernandez and Erik Bedard at the top, likley followed in order by Carlos Silva, Jarrod Washburn and Batista.
