Jose Guillen passed his physical Sunday and signed with the Mariners as a free agent, according to the Seattle Times. The one-year deal will guarantee Guillen $5.5 million and contains incentives up to another $3 million. There also is a $9 million mutual option for 2008.

The Mariners and free agent Jose Guillen were closing in on a $5.5 million, one-year contract Saturday, according to the AP. A person familiar with the talks, speaking on condition of anonymity because the deal has not been finalized, said the agreement was expected to be finalized after Guillen completes a physical with the team Monday. The deal includes the potential for Guillen to earn up to $3 million in performance bonuses.

"I'll be hitting in three months ... 100 percent, no doubt in my mind, I'll be ready in spring training," he said. Jose Guillen underwent reconstructive surgery on his right elbow on Tuesday, according to the AP. Dr. James Andrews repaired Guillen's right ulnar collateral ligament, which was completely torn. Guillen is expected to miss the rest of the season, and there's no guarantee that he'll be ready to go for the start of 2007. He will be a free agent this fall.

Jose Guillen will undergo season-ending surgery on Tuesday to repair a torn ligament in his right elbow, according to the AP. "He could not go forward without having this operation," Nationals general manager Jim Bowden said. It's not known how long it will take Guillen to recover from the surgery, but he'll be sidelined well into the 2007 season. He is slated to become a free agent at the end of this year.
