The New York Daily News reports that John Olerud left last night's game in the sixth inning with a bruised instep. X-rays were negative, but he wasn't sure if he would be able to play through the injury on Sunday in Game 4. "As far as they can tell, it's going to be a bad bruise," Olerud said.

Olerud was batting just .245 with five home runs and 22 RBI in 78 games with the Mariners this season before being released last month.

He will take over as the everyday starter at first base until Jason Giambi is healthy again. It's possible he'll take a brief trip to the minors to get back in the swing of things. GM Brian Cashman said he couldn't guarantee Olerud would stay with the team once Giambi returns.

The AP reports that the Yankees are close to signing John Olerud. Joe Torre said that Olerud might start out in the minors to get back into game shape. The Yanks apparently intend to give Olerud a chance to play first base ahead of Tony Clark, which seems silly since the two are basically the same player at this point, except that Clark switch-hits and has more power.
