Player Notes
July 5, 2008
Bartolo Colon has been playing catch from 120 feet and may be able to throw off a mound early next week, The Providence Journal reports. He is on the DL due to a back strain.

Our View:This news would suggest that Colon is still likely a couple weeks away from returning. We'll continue to follow his progress and maybe he can rejoin the rotation after the All-Star break.

Bartolo Colon is still a week away from beginning a throwing program, according to Jeff Goldberg of the Courant News.

Our View:Because it's a back injury that is keeping Colon sidelined, expect Boston to wait longer than usual to bring the starter back.
June 17, 2008
Bartolo Colon has been placed on the 15-day DL due to stiffness in his lower back, according to the Boston Globe. The Red Sox have recalled righthander Chris Smith from Triple-A Pawtucket to take his spot on the roster.

Our View:Colon swung a little too hard at a Cole Hamels changeup last night in inter-league play against the Phillies, which caused his back to stiffen up.
June 16, 2008
Bartolo Colon was forced from his start on Monday against the Phillies with back stiffness, according to the Associated Press. Colon allowed six hits, two walks and four runs before exiting the game in which he picked up his second loss of the season.

Our View:Colon had all kinds of control issues tonight as his four seam fastball was darting all over the place leading to a bunch of his pitches leaking out over the plate. If this ends up being a DL type injury, Justin Masterson would likely be left in the rotation even when Daisuke Matsuzaka returns from injury.
June 15, 2008
Bartolo Colon has pitched well since being called up from Pawtucket, but he's also and injury risk for those who are counting on him for the long haul this summer. His 6.8 K/9 and 2.2 BB/9 are over-the-top good, and his velocity is where it was during a stellar stretch early last year with the Angels.

Our View:He has won four of his first five starts, but the Boston offense isn't what it was without David Ortiz, and the unit has been pedestrian on the road. Counting on Colon to stay healthy, and get the offensive support he has in his first five starts is asking a lot. Selling high, or at least finding what the market will bare, would be advised.
