J.D. Drew, who is recovering from a herniated disc, will try to face live batting practice today, according to the Boston Globe. Manager Terry Francona said, "We'll kind of see where he is. He said it seems like he takes a step forward and then one back. So we'll just see where he's at. I think he's hoping that he's only maybe a couple, three days away. Until it goes away, we'll just deal with it."

Our View:He is anxious to return, and is hopeful the ailment won't flare up again. Fantasy owners can count on him to play hard and give his best effort when he does return.
September 5, 2008
J.D. Drew will take batting practice and shag flyballs on Friday. He has not played since August 17th due to a herniated disc. The Providence Journal reports that he hopes to be back in three to four days.

Our View:Not so fast. Drew has been known to drag out his recovery time and there's no reason to expect him back so soon. However, we expect his standard production once he does return to the lineup. It's unlikely he would ever play at anything less than 100%.
September 3, 2008
J.D. Drew's back is feeling better, but still may be a ways from being activated from the DL, according to the Boston Globe.

Our View:He is making progress and took batting practice Tuesday, and should remain stashed on fantasy rosters.
September 1, 2008
J.D. Drew took indoor batting practice on Monday, the first time he has been in the cage since August 17th because of back pain, according to the Boston Herald.

Our View:While this is certainly a positive step, there is still no word on when Drew will be activated and return to the starting lineup.
August 29, 2008
J.D. Drew will meet with doctors in Boston on Friday to try and remedy his aching back, according to the Boston Globe. "There's a chance they might give him an epidural," said Red Sox manager Terry Francona.

Our View:Drew was placed on the DL on Tuesday because his back had not gotten better. The team (and fantasy owners) have hope that the treatment will improve him enough so he can return to help them down the stretch.
August 26, 2008
Updating an earlier report, J.D. Drew has been placed on the 15-day DL by the Red Sox, according to the Providence Journal. Joe Thurston has been recalled from Triple-A Pawtucket to fill his spot on the roster.

Our View:The team was hopeful his ailing back would improve by today, but it appears they did not get their wish. He missed the last six games due to a herniated disk in his back.
August 26, 2008
The Red Sox are hopeful J.D. Drew's back improves by today, otherwise he could be bound for the DL, according to the Boston Globe. Drew has been out of service since injuring his back on August 17.

Our View:The team also starts a series against the rival Yankees Tuesday, increasing their need to get Drew back. If he does land on the DL, Jason Lane could possibly be promoted from Pawtucket to fill his spot in the outfield.
August 24, 2008
As J.D. Drew's back spasms continue to keep him out of the Red Sox's lineup, it is becoming more and more likely that the right fielder may be headed to the disabled list, according to MLB.com.

Our View:Drew was not in the lineup for Boston's series finale with the Blue Jays on Sunday, and has now missed the past six games because of his sore back. On Friday, Drew visited a Toronto hospital and was told that he had a herniated disc in his back. He also underwent an MRI exam, which did not reveal anything major, but only confirmed that his problems were due to back spasms. The 32-year-old Drew has dealt with back woes at times during his career. This year, there have been multiple occasions where his back has locked up on him, the first time coming just moments before Opening Day in Japan. However, despite his back troubles this season, Drew has managed to avoid any trips to the DL.
August 23, 2008
J.D. Drew's MRI confirmed he is suffering from a herniated disk in his back, according to the Boston Globe. Manager Terry Francona said, "The MRI was actually very encouraging. Talked about the disk; that's been there for a long time. It's just spasming around it. The muscles are spasming, so when we calm that down he'll be OK. I think we thought he was calmed down to the point yesterday where he was going to play, then it spasmed up again. Just got to get it to calm down."

Our View:Drew is on anti-inflammatory medication for the spasms. The team trainers will continually try to treat it, see if we can get it calmed down, try to break the spasm, fix the pain, and then get him ready to return to the diamond. It remains to be seen if he will need to spend time on the DL.
August 22, 2008
J.D. Drew is suffering from a herniated disc in his back, according to the Providence Journal. He had missed three straight games and was still in pain on Friday, so he underwent an MRI, which revealed the condition.

Our View:Though Drew said he hopes he will not need a stint on the DL, the Red Sox may be wise to make such a move because they can backdate it to the day after Drew played his last game.
August 22, 2008
J.D. Drew will not play on Friday and he is scheduled to have an MRI on his back, which has been causing him pain, according to the Providence Journal.

Our View:Drew was supposed to play Friday, but that plan was scuttled. We'll know more on the extent of the injury once the MRI results are revealed. Until them, stash him on your bench.
August 21, 2008
J.D. Drew missed his third straight game Wednesday due to lower back stiffness, according to the Boston Globe.

Our View:He is feeling better, but manager Terry Francona opted to keep him out Wednesday since he hadn't particpated in baseball activities for a few days. The plan is for him to take batting practice and then target him to return Friday against Toronto.
August 19, 2008
Outfielder J.D. Drew is out again on Tuesday due to back stiffness, the Providence Journal reports. He suffered the injury on Sunday and also sat on Monday. Manager Terry Francona says that Drew is improving.

Our View:We're shocked, shocked, shocked to see such a rock like Drew missing time. He remains day-to-day.
August 18, 2008
J.D. Drew is not in Monday's lineup because of back stiffness, according to the Providence Journal. He had to leave Sunday's game with the injury. "Hopefully we got him out soon enough where it doesn't completely lock up on him and we lose him for four or five days," said manager Terry Francona.

Our View:At this point this doesn't seem like a big deal, but you never know with Drew. He has had back issues a few times this year.
August 17, 2008
J.D. Drew was forced out of Sunday's game against Toronto due to lower back tightness, according to the AP.

Our View:Jeff Bailey replaced him in right field. We will keep you posted when more details regarding Drew's status are disclosed.
August 11, 2008
J.D. Drew had two hits and two RBI for the Red Sox on Monday night in their 5-1 victory over the White Sox.

Our View:Drew was the league's best hitter in June (.337-12-27-27 in 26 games), but over his last 21 games he hasn't even remotely resembled that hitter with a .217 average, two home runs and seven RBI at the plate.
August 6, 2008
J.D. Drew hit leadoff for the third straight game Wednesday, going 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored.

Our View:Drew's OBP on the year is around .410, so he's a good fit for this spot in the order. It remains to be seen if he'll stay in the spot.
August 4, 2008
J.D. Drew hit leadoff for the Red Sox, but he wound up going 0-for-4 with two strikeouts in the team's loss to Kansas City.

Our View:Drew has really cooled down lately, and hit just .221 in July. He remains a solid fantasy option, even at a lesser pace than he had been on.
July 26, 2008
J.D. Drew hit a solo home run off of Yankees pitcher Andy Pettitte, and finished the game 1-for-4.

Our View:Drew can hit lefties as well as right-handers, as he carried a .291 average against southpaws into the game today.
July 25, 2008
J.D. Drew failed to get a hit in his four plate appearances against the Yankees, and he struck out in two of them.

Our View:After his torrid June and beginning of July, Drew is just 3-for-25 in his last seven games.
July 23, 2008
The Red Sox and Mariners battled late into the eve with Boston emerging victorious, 4-0. The charge was led, once again, by J.D. Drew , going 2-for-3 with one walk and his 18th homer of the season to total two RBIs and one run scored.

Our View:Drew has cooled this month after a hot June in which he hit .337 with 12 homers and 27 RBIs. Thus far in July, he's hitting .231 with just one homer and six RBIs, a significant fall that must frustrate fantasy owners across the globe (though Drew's history suggests surprise should not be a valid emotion).
July 12, 2008
J.D. Drew missed his second-straight game on Friday due to a sore back, but he could return today, according to the Providence Journal. He said, "It’s a little stiff, but not too bad. I’m probably a day away just to be on the safe side. Considering how I was the other day, I’m much better."

Our View:Manager Terry Francona believes Drew will be ready to play today, but fantasy owners should err to the side of caution heading through the All-Star break.
July 11, 2008
J.D. Drew has not played since leaving Tuesday's game with a sore back. He is not into Friday's starting lineup, according to the Boston Herald.

Our View:Those of you who have ever owned J.D. Drew new this time was coming. It may be nothing more than a mosquito bite, but don't be surprised if Drew sits until the All-Star break.
July 9, 2008
J.D. Drew is out of Wednesday's starting lineup, according to the Boston Globe. Brandon Moss is filling in for him in right field.

Our View:Drew left Tuesday's game with a sore back. The severity of the ailment, and his return to the lineup, is yet to be decided.
July 2, 2008
J.D. Drew went 2-for-4 with an RBI in Wednesday's 7-6 loss to Tampa Bay.

Our View:Drew raised his average to .302 and recorded an RBI in three-straight games. Drew shall remain penciled into your fantasy outfield.
July 2, 2008
J.D. Drew has been named the AL Player of the Month for June, according to the AP. Drew hit .337 (31-for-92) with 12 homers and tied for the major league lead with 29 RBI over 28 games in the month. Drew also scored 27 runs and had a ML-best .848 slugging percentage.

Our View:It marked the first monthly award for Drew, who raised his season average to .299 with 16 homers and 50 RBI over 72 games.
July 1, 2008
J.D. Drew went 0-for-3 but recorded Boston's lone RBI on a sacrifice fly in Tuesday's 3-1 loss to the upstart Rays. Jacoby Ellsbury stole his 35th base tonight as well.

Our View:That was Drew's 50th RBI of the season, with six coming over his last seven contests.
June 27, 2008
J.D. Drew went 1-for-3 and hammered a three-run homer in Friday's 6-1 win over the Astros.

Our View:That was his 15th homer of the season, and his third over his last seven games. He also snapped a three-game hitless streak tonight.
June 25, 2008
J.D. Drew had been terrorizing opposing pitchers in the month of June, but he has cooled a bit recently. Drew has gone 2-for-19 in his last five games, with one home run and two RBI.

Our View:It won't get much easier tonight for Drew, who faces off against Diamondbacks lefty Randy Johnson. For his career, Drew is 1-for-8 against the Big Unit, with two strikeouts.
June 18, 2008
J.D. Drew can't be stopped. The outfielder went 4-for-5 with a homer, double, two runs, and four RBI on Wednesday afternoon. Drew is hitting .441 with nine homers and 21 RBI in 17 games this month.

Our View:Drew can be fun to watch when he's not nicked up. This is the best stretch we've seen out of him in a while. Fantasy owners should enjoy the ride and keep knocking on wood.
June 16, 2008
J.D. Drew hit his 12th home run of the year on Monday off of the Phillies Cole Hamels in the Red Sox 8-2 loss to the Phils.

Our View:Drew has been one of the best hitters in all of baseball in June as he has eight home runs, 17 RBI and a .440 batting average in 15 games. When he is healthy that smooth swing is a thing of beauty, and right now he has it all going for him, though we wouldn't be at all surprised to find him injured at some point soon given his track record.
June 13, 2008
J.D. Drew brings his hot streak to Cincinnati tonight when the Red Sox meet the Reds at the Great American Ballpark, according to MLB.com. Drew is riding an 11-game hitting streak, in which he racked up five doubles, six home runs, and 15 RBI.

Our View:He is hitting .500 over 36 at-bats in June, and should remain in your lineups tonight, especially against Aaron Harang, who is 2-9 with a 4.31 ERA.
June 10, 2008
J.D. Drew is in a zone. The outfielder went 1-for-2 with a homer, two walks, two runs, and two RBI on Tuesday. Drew is 15-for-28 with five homers, 12 RBI, and 12 runs over nine games this month.

Our View:Who needs David Ortiz when you have Drew? J.D. has long had the talent to go on runs like this, but he rarely sustains such hot streaks, often thanks to injuries.
June 7, 2008
J.D. Drew went 3-for-3 with three runs and two RBI for the Red Sox on Saturday to increase his average to .318.

Our View:Drew is working on a 7-game hitting streak that has produced 13 hits as he has raised his average from .282. If he continues to hit in the third spot in front of Manny Ramirez, Drew will have a great chance to be productive.
June 4, 2008
J.D. Drew, batting third in place of the injured David Ortiz, continued his offensive onslaught with an RBI double and a single.

Our View: Drew had a two-run homer and a double in Tuesday win over the Rays. With Wednesday's performance -- Drew raised his average over the .300 mark.
June 1, 2008
J.D. Drew went 2-for-3 with three RBI and the Boston Red Sox won their 35th game of the season in a 9-4 victory over the Baltimore Orioles on Sunday.

Our View:Drew has missed 14 of the Red Sox 59 games this year due to one injury or another, but has performed well when he's been healthy. The right-fielder has five home runs, 25 RBI and 32 runs scored in 152 at-bats on the season.
June 1, 2008
J.D. Drew went 2-for-3 with a homer, walk, one run, and three RBI in Sunday's win over the Orioles.

Our View:We guess J.D. truly is over his battle with vertigo. He's safe to use in fantasy leagues.
June 1, 2008
J.D. Drew will start in right field on Sunday, the Boston Globe confirms. The veteran outfielder has been dealing with vertigo.

Our View:Our guess is that Orioles starter Brian Burres will throw Drew a bunch of curveballs on Sunday. Anyway, fantasy owners can use J.D. if they wish.
May 31, 2008
J.D. Drew is improving in his bout with vertigo, but is not yet ready to return to the diamond, according to MLB.com. Drew did not feel like he was on a merry-go-round when he woke up on Saturday morning, and said, "I've had little bouts of it here and there, just a day or two at a time. Fortunately, it never lingered for weeks. I know for some guys it was weeks and years and months."

Our View:The team is unclear when he will be ready to return, and missed his second straight game tonight.
May 30, 2008
J.D. Drew will not be in the Red Sox starting lineup tonight. The Boston Herald reports that the right fielder is suffering from vertigo.

Our View:Add this to Drew's long list of missed games and ailments during his career.
May 22, 2008
J.D. Drew joined teammate Mike Lowell in the fun on Thursday as he too hit a grand slam for the Red Sox.

Our View:Drew is hitting .290 with 22 RBI in 38 games this season, and though you might be looking for a little bit more from Drew he has done his job of getting on base (nearly a .400 OBP), and as long as he stays healthy he will be productive.
May 21, 2008
J.D. Drew was out of Wednesday's lineup, one day after fouling a ball off his right knee in the second inning of the win over Kansas City, according to MLB.com. He was available off the bench, though, and Drew expects to be back Thursday. "They told me last night I was going to get the day [off] so I'd be ready for the afternoon game [on Thursday]," Drew said. "I'm a little sore and stiff, but nothing that's holding me back by any means. I hit that pretty good off my leg, but everything is fine."

Our View:Drew always seems to be nursing something, but this injury at least seems to be minor.
May 16, 2008
J.D. Drew will return to the Sox lineup on Friday night after missing the past couple of days after rolling over his wrist in the field, according to the Providence Journal.

Our View:Drew will look to pick right up where he left off getting on base at around a .400 clip, though it would be nice to see him generate a few more extra base hits than the nine he has produced in 34 games.
May 14, 2008
J.D. Drew doesn't expect to play on Wednesday, but he also doesn't think he'll be out long after injuring his left wrist on Tuesday. "It's day to day right now," Drew tells the Boston Globe. "I rolled it pretty good. It's one of those plays you can't protect it. The ball hit the web of my glove, but when it jammed into the ground, my wrist went along with it." X-rays were negative, but Drew may undergo an MRI.

Our View:Drew is in a select category of oft-injured players who can turn "day-to-day" into weeks. The nice thing is that the Red Sox have an off-day on Thursday. We'll update his status when more is known.
May 13, 2008
Boston RF J.D. Drew has left tonight's game with Baltimore early following an apparent wrist injury, according to the Boston Globe.

Our View:Drew left the field in the third inning after a failed sliding catch on a looping fly ball off the bat of Freddie Bynum. The initial report from the team indicates Drew has suffered a sprained left wrist and that X-rays were negative. We will update as news becomes available.
May 2, 2008
Manager Terry Francona is hoping that J.D. Drew will be available to play tonight, according to the Boston Herald. Drew has sat out the last two games with a quad injury.

Our View:After a hot start, Drew has just four hits over the last two weeks. He really shouldn't be owned in any shallower leagues.
May 1, 2008
J.D. Drew is out of the lineup on Thursday due to a sore quadriceps, and he could also miss at least part of the weekend series with the Rays, according to MLB.com. "I really don't want to miss six weeks at a time," Drew said. "I had an injury like this [in 1999], just kind of had a little twinge in my quad like that and played the next day, and ended up blowing it up and missing six weeks."

Our View:Drew was able to jog on Thursday, but with he an Jacoby Ellsbury out injured, the team recalled Brandon Moss to help fill the void.
April 30, 2008
J.D. Drew won't be in the lineup on Wednesday night due to his injured quad, according to the Boston Globe.

Our View:The good news is that Drew is receiving treatment that is helping the injury heal. The bad news is there is no word on when he might return to the lineup, but really, that's pretty much the case with Drew every day of the regular season as he always seems to be injured.
April 29, 2008
J.D. Drew exited Tuesday's game in the fourth inning with a left quad injury, according to the AP. Brandon Moss replaced Drew in the field.

Our View:Consider Drew day-to-day for the time being, but given his history, a DL stint is always a possibilty.
April 24, 2008
J.D. Drew will ride the pine in favor of Jacoby Ellsbury in right field, according to The Boston Globe. Ellsbury is playing in right, as Coco Crisp is starting in center field.

Our View:Drew earned a day off, as he contributed three homers and 13 RBI over 19 games, while maintaining a .284 batting average. Ellsbury is hitting well too, as he recently had a two-homer game, and the team needs to work him into the mix more.
April 16, 2008
J.D. Drew went 3-for-5 with two RBI and two runs scored for the Red Sox on Wednesday.

Our View:Drew is often maligned, but when he is on the field he almost always produces something, and this year he has produced runs with 10 RBI and 12 runs scored in 12 games.
April 12, 2008
J.D. Drew has hit safely in all eight games he has played in this season, and he will look to extend his streak today against the rival Yankees, according to MLB.com.

Our View:Drew has been a hot fantasy outfielder so far, as he holds a .429 average with three homers and eight RBI. He has struck out nine times, but he is forgiven.
April 11, 2008
J.D. Drew hit a home run for the Red Sox, the only run they recorded off Chien-Ming Wang in a 4-1 loss. Drew now has three HR, eight RBI and eight runs scored in, you guessed it, eight games this season.
April 10, 2008
J.D. Drew went 3-for-3 with two runs and two RBI helping lead the Boston Red Sox to a 12-6 victory over Detroit on Thursday. Drew is hitting .440 and has two home runs and seven RBI in seven games played.
April 9, 2008
Boston’s top hitter? Try J.D. Drew , going 1-for-3 with one walk, one strike out, and one run scored in Boston’s 2-7 loss to the Detroit Tigers this evening. Drew now carries a team-leading batting average of .364, but let’s remember… it’s early.
April 2, 2008
J.D. Drew will start in right field against Oakland today, according to the Boston Globe. Previous reports stated that Drew could be out until the weekend, but that is not the case.
April 1, 2008
J.D. Drew will be available to pinch-hit Tuesday but will not be in the lineup, according to MLB.com. However, the outfielder will be in the lineup on Wednesday. "We'll have him available [Tuesday]," said manager Terry Francona. "Then he'll have another day off [Thursday]. I think he feels OK. There's a little, I think, apprehension, but I think he's doing pretty well. We'll see how he does today." Drew has been dealing with a lower back strain. Hopefully you aren't forced to use Drew in your fantasy lineup, but if you are, it sounds like you'll be getting him back soon.
April 1, 2008
J.D. Drew won't likely play on Tuesday due to his back ailment but could return Wednesday, this according to the Providence Journal. Coco Crisp should continue to man center field while Ellsbury handles right field, until Drew returns.
March 30, 2008
J.D. Drew continues to battle his back tightness and the team is unsure if he can play on Tuesday, according to MLB.com. Manager Francona stated, "I definitely think he feels better. It puts me in a little bit of a bind. Again, I'm not pointing a finger. It makes it harder for me to make a judgment on, 'OK, first of all, is he ready to play? Is he ready to play and help us win?' We'll just continue to monitor. That's why I played Ellsbury in right so we can have kind of backup plan there." If Drew is unable to play, then Coco Crisp would start in center field, and Jacoby Ellsbury would man right field.
March 28, 2008
J.D. Drew is doubtful to face his old Dodgers club in Friday's exhibition game due to the tight lower back that kept him out of the first two regular-season games, according to the Boston Globe. "I would like to get some at-bats at some point this weekend, but I want to make sure everything is good and sturdy in there before I go out and start taking some hacks," Drew said. The Red Sox are focused on getting him ready for their next regular-season contest on Tuesday, so they won't let him swing in an exhibition game unless he's close to 100 percent.
March 25, 2008
J.D. Drew has been scratched just a few moments before the first pitch of the 2008 season, due to tightness in his lower back, according to MLB.com. It is unknown if Drew will be able to play the second game of the series on Wednesday, and Brandon Moss replaced him in right field.
March 22, 2008
J.D. Drew joined David Ortiz in the long-ball parade on Saturday in Japan, hitting a three-run shot to left-center, this according to MLB.com. "The home run came on a fastball away," said Drew. "I made good contact. It's always good to produce with men on base." Drew is coming off a horrific 2007 campaign after signing a monster long-term deal. His fantasy value has plummeted. In some mixed formats the right fielder is not even being drafted.
