Cardinals starter Chris Carpenter did not have surgery to deal with the nerve problem in his shoulder because it could have affected his day-to-day lifestyle, possibly limiting the use of his right arm in the future, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. "There was a risk of significant complications," said St. Louis team doctor George Paletta.

Our View:Carpenter and other doctors believe the condition will heal with rest. He will be an extremely risky pick for fantasy owners next season.

Chris Carpenter has decided against surgery to repair a compressed nerve in his right shoulder, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Our View:There was no guarantee that the surgery would permanently correct the problem, so Carpenter opted against it. GM John Mozeliak remains optimistic about the situation, but his status for 2009 is unclear.

Cardinals pitcher Chris Carpenter will get more opinions from different doctors before deciding what he will do concerning the nerve issues in his right shoulder, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Our View:Carpenter may need surgery on his shoulder, and nobody is quite sure how much that would affect him in the future. We'll keep you updated as soon as any new information is available.

Chris Carpenter's career could be in jeopardy because of nerve issues in his right shoulder, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. An MRI has revealed no structural damage, but the issue is with compression and scarring of a series of nerves feeding the shoulder. Surgery to alleviate the condition is "very much on the table," said a source. The source added: "This is a big deal. If the nerve doesn't recover, it's a serious problem. It could prevent him from pitching."

Our View:Obviously this would be a huge blow to the Cardinals for next season and beyond. Even if Carp doesn't end up having surgery, he would be a huge question mark for fantasy owners.

The Cardinals' team doctors found no structural damage or anything to merit concern in the scan taken Friday on Chris Carpenter's right shoulder, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Our View:Carpenter will now visit with a nerve specialist today as the team continues to search for a reason, and a treatment, for the nerve irritation in Carpenter's throwing arm.
