Livan Hernandez threw his usual slop against the Cardinals on Sunday, walking in a run in the process, but managed to give up just one earned run in three innings of work. He walked three and struck out two.

Our View:You get what you pay for with Livan, and today looked a lot like what his regular season outings should look like for the Nats this season. Even in NL-only leagues, his fantasy value is basically nonexistent.

Updating an earlier item, the Nationals have indeed signed veteran hurler Livan Hernandez to a minor league contract, according to Bill Ladson of MLB.com.

Our View:Ohh boy. This news should be upsetting to Nationals fans for two reasons. First, Livan Hernandez is back in the fold in Washington. Second, it likely means that Stephen Strasburg will not begin 2010 in the major leagues. Luckily for fantasy owners, they have the luxury of being able to ignore things like a team signing Livan Hernandez to a minor league deal.

After a series of widely hailed roster moves this offseason, the Nationals are now in "serious" contract discussions with Livan Hernandez, according to MLB.com's Bill Ladson.

Our View:In other words, they are thinking about making a bad roster move. In their defense, however, they had previously expressed a desire to land a Livan Hernandez "type" this offseason, as in someone who could eat up innings without getting hurt. It's just that no one thought that actually meant they were going to bring back Livan Hernandez. Stay tuned.

Livan Hernandez wants to pitch for the Nationals in 2010, but the young ball-club does not appear to want him, according to MLB.com.

Our View:Livan went as far as to offer a contract proposal to the team during last month's winter meetings, which the club ignored. At age 34, and after many consecutive seasons of ballooning ERAs and batting averages against, Hernandez's best bet appears to be signing a minor-league contract with a club very thin on starting pitching.

According to Bill Ladson on Twitter, the Nationals have declined arbitration on starter Livan Hernandez, first baseman Dimitri Young, catcher Josh Bard, outfielder Austin Kearns and reliever Ron Villone.

Our View:None of the above players were Type A or B free agents, so the Nationals stood nothing to gain by offering them arbitration. It doesn't mean they definitely won't return, but for a young team with a very limited payroll, it seems foolish to invest in washed up, aging athletes. Expect the Nats to push prospects and go forward on the cheap.
