Gary Bennett signed a one-year deal with the Dodgers Monday, according to the AP. "Gary provides us with a veteran catcher who can spell Russell from time to time," Dodgers general manager Ned Colletti said in a statement. "He has been a member of some very good teams and the fact that he has spent his entire major league career in the National League is also something we found to be beneficial." Bennett, who recently admitted to using HGH in 2003, will serve as a backup to starter Russell Martin.

The Cardinals declined their $900,000 option on Gary Bennett Friday, instead opting to pay a $50,000 buyout, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Bennett, who hit .252 in 155 at-bats in 2007, didn't see much playing time down the stretch after the Cards acquired Kelly Stinnett.

Gary Bennett was back in Thursday's lineup after sitting out the previous night; he was beaned by an Aaron Harang pitch Tuesday. "I figured it would be a day or two," Bennett told the AP. "But yes, it's a relief."

Gary Bennett was forced to leave Tuesday's game after being hit on the neck by a pitch. He managed to get to his feet and walk to first, though he appeared dazed and was pulled from the game. With Yadier Molina out for the next 4-6 weeks, Bennett had just taken over as the primary catcher for the Cards. Kelly Stinnett replaced Bennett behind the plate on Tuesday.

With Yadier Molina out 4-6 weeks, Gary Bennett should get the bulk of the playing time behind the plate for the Cardinals. Bennett is hitting just .227 on the year and doesn't offer much fantasy help, but those in NL-only leagues might have no choice but to pick him up if they're looking for a replacement for Molina.
