Player Notes
November 19, 2008
Brian Giles expects to begin the 2009 campaign with the Padres, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune. Giles said, "I don't see how that would be a thought for them, to pick up my option and try to trade me before spring training. I think they picked up my option to be one of the pieces to try to win here. I don't think they picked up my option to try to trade me. I'm going to play here."

Our View:Giles has the power to veto any trade. Giles' power may be on the decline, but he still hit .306 with a .398 OBP in 2008 with 81 runs scored.
November 7, 2008
The Padres exercised Brian Giles's option for $9 million on Friday, according to the Padres' official site.

Our View:With a buyout of $3 million, this move makes a lot of sense. Even with Giles' power numbers down, the Padres are unlikely to get an outfielder with the same production for $6 million, the difference between his buyout and option.
September 30, 2008
Brian Giles appears almost certain to remain with the Padres as the club is leaning towards exercising their $9 million option, according to the Padres Official Website. "We're probably leaning more toward exercising the option," Towers said. "This is guy really makes our offense go, and he's the type of hitter we like to have, especially in this ballpark," GM Kevin Towers said.

Our View:Giles was seventh in the NL in batting (.306) and sixth in OBP (.398) in a quietly effective season. He is no longer anything more than a passable option in the power categories (12 home runs, 63 RBI), but he hits for a high enough average and produces enough runs (81) to be useful in deep mixed leagues.
September 28, 2008
Brian Giles was 1-for-4 with an RBI in what may have been his last game as a Padre after five-plus seasons. The 37-year-old right fielder will be a free agent this winter.

Our View:Giles hit .306 and drew 87 walks in 2008. He has not hit more than 15 home runs in a season since 2004.
September 11, 2008
Brian Giles went 1-for-4 with a run scored on Wednesday night, and he failed to record an RBI while leaving four runners on base.

Our View:Giles has morphed into a solid leadoff hitter with a .303 average and a .394 OBP. He still has doubles power with 34 doubles, though his lack of speed (one steal) and the poor offense around him limit his production (70 runs scored).
