Less than a month after signing a minor league contract with the Dodgers, Brian Giles has announced his retirement from baseball, according to Dylan Hernandez of the Los Angeles Times.

Our View:Giles, a 39-year-old 15-year veteran, simply had nothing left. He hit an unseemly .191 in 225 at-bats with the Padres last season, and got on base at an equally abysmal rate of .277. He had hit just 14 home runs since the end of 2007. He finishes his career as a .291 hitter, and with a huge on-base percentage of .400.

Brian Giles has signed a minor-league contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers, according to MLB.com.

Our View:The long-time Padre will try to be the club's fifth outfielder and a pinch hitter deluxe. After hitting just .191 in 225 at-bats a season ago, he is far from a slam dunk to make the team.

According to Dan Hayes on Twitter, there are 8-to-10 teams interested in free agent outfielder Brian Giles and his representation feels that he will have a deal in place by the end of the week.

Our View:Giles had massive knee issues last season that limited him to 61 games and a dreadful .191/.277/.271 line. Still, he had an .854 OPS in 2008, so he could still be a factor if he is 100 percent. His defense has become a liability the last few years, so perhaps an AL team will target him as a potential DH and spot starter. Stay tuned.

The Yankess are interested in free agent outfielder Brian Giles, according to the Newark Star-Ledger.

Our View:Giles, soon to be 39 years old, looked awfully done in 2009, batting .191 in 225 at-bats. The Yanks may look, but will almost certainly not sign him to their bench.

MLB.com is reporting that the Padres will not offer long-time San Diego outfielder Brian Giles arbitration, making him a free agent.

Our View:Catcher Henry Blanco was also not offered arbitration. Giles has been somewhat of an albatross for years now in San Diego, getting paid handsomely for very little run production. He will likely have to take a spot on somebody's bench if he wants to continue playing.
