Player Notes
September 4, 2008
In his first start since late May, Shawn Estes was spectacular in holding the Brewers to one run over six innings in his second victory of the year.

Our View:Estes walked only one batter, but he also punched out only one hitter, in a tidy seven hit effort. He will remain in the Padres rotation the rest of the way, but expecting a repeat of tonight's effort moving forward is probably pushing it.
September 1, 2008
Shawn Estes, out since May 31st with a broken thumb, was activated from the DL on Monday, according to the Associated Press. The Padres also called up Matt Antonelli and Wade LeBlanc.

Our View:Estes has a 3.33 ERA over 24.1 innings this season, and he looked solid before getting hurt. However, given his track record, it would be a huge stretch to expect another run of consistency now that he is back with the Padres.
August 20, 2008
Shawn Estes has suffered a setback as he attempts to rehab from a broken left thumb, according to Padres.com. Estes has an infection under a fingernail that is causing him pain, thus delaying his return.

Our View:Estes has had his next start pushed back a couple days, as he tries to rid himself of the infection.
August 16, 2008
Shawn Estes will be back with the team on September 1, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune.

Our View:Estes will make a few more rehab starts then join the club when rosters expand. He was having a nice season, with a 3.33 ERA and 1.15 WHIP, though that was on just four games started.
July 30, 2008
Shawn Estes, who is recovering from a broken left thumb, will pitch a second bullpen session Wednesday and a simulated game Saturday before joining Single-A Lake Elsinore next Tuesday to begin a rehab assignment, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune.

Our View:He figures to make around three rehab starts, and looks to return to the Padres at some point in August, barring a setback.
July 6, 2008
Shawn Estes could have the cast removed from his injured left thumb as early as Friday, according to the North County Times.

Our View:The cast will be removed as long as the ailment has healed properly. Manager Bud Black noted that Estes is likely three weeks away from pitching, meaning he could return to the Padres at some point in August.
June 3, 2008
Shawn Estes will avoid surgery on his broken left thumb, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune. Estes said, "Surgery would not speed things up. I've had a rough couple of days. This was something I was not mentally prepared for."

Our View:He is still expected to miss 6-8 weeks, and will start using a bone stimulation device Tuesday. Estes fared well this season as he went 1-1 with a 3.33 ERA and solid 1.15 WHIP over 24.1 innings.
May 31, 2008
The San Diego Padres have reportedly placed LHP Shawn Estes on the 15-day disabled list after fracturing the end of his left thumb during a fall down some stairs, according to MLB.com.

Our View:Estes suffered the fracture when he fell going down the stairs that lead from the visiting clubhouse to the dugout during San Diego's 7-3 victory in 13 innings on Friday. The Padres have reinstated RHP Carlos Guevara from the disabled list to take Estes' spot on the 25-man roster.
May 28, 2008
San Diego LHP Shawn Estes suffered his first loss of the season as the Padres fell 6-4 to Washington. Estes pitched five innings to allow four runs on four hits (all earned) with two walks and thee strikeouts.

Our View:Estes allowed his second home run of the season and surrendered his highest earned run total of the season thus far.
May 19, 2008
Shawn Estes cleared another hurdle as the issue of his elbow never came up while discussing his two-hit, 6.1-inning outing against the Mariners, reports the Union Tribune. "On paper, we should have won that game," said Estes, who departed with the Padres leading 2-1. As for himself: "My curve was not working too well (Sunday). But my two-seamer (fastball) was breaking down and away from the righties. "What is the point of throwing the breaking ball if the fastball is working like it was? Keep it as simple as you can."

Our View:Only 45 of Estes' 89 were strikes. But he issued only two walks in the no-decision. His first two starts has solidified his station with the Padres. He is now officially the No. 5 starter and will be for the rest of the year, barring an injury.
May 18, 2008
Shawn Estes held the Mariners to just a single earned run over 6.1 innings on Sunday in a no-decision.

Our View:With Mark Prior's return pushed back, Estes could be the Padres #5 starter for the foreseeable future after a second straight strong start. However, Estes just doesn't have the arsenal to keep this up, so be wary of counting on anything other than up and down performances.
May 13, 2008
Shawn Estes, the Padres new fifth starter, picked up his first victory since 2005 by holding the Cubs to two earned runs over 5.1 innings.

Our View:Estes is a huge risk to show any type of consistency, so the smart money is on staying far away from him in all but the deepest of leagues.
May 10, 2008
Shawn Estes has been awarded the fifth spot in the Padres' rotation, and will make his first start on Tuesday against the Cubs, according to the North County Times. Manager Bud Black said Estes looked completely different from the pitcher he saw in late March before the Padres requested Estes go to Triple-A Portland. Black saw improvements in Estes' velocity, command and breaking stuff.

Our View:Will Ledezma will return to the bullpen. Estes hasn't pitched in the Majors since April 5, 2006, but is given a chance to start again after he only allowed two hits over 1.2 innings in his first game back this season, with two strikeouts.
May 8, 2008
The Padres have purchased the contract of lefty Shawn Estes from Triple-A Portland, according to the AP. The team also placed pitcher Kevin Cameron on the DL. Estes was 4-2 with a 3.67 ERA over six starts for Portland, and Manager Bud Black said, "I think he’s best suited to start, but we’ll see how it plays out."

Our View:Estes will be used in the bullpen Thursday against Atlanta. He will help shore up the Padres' pen, but isn't worth targeting as a fantasy prospect.
May 7, 2008
Updating a rumor we reported earlier today, the San Diego Padres have confirmed their intentions to purchase the contract of LHP Shawn Estes on Thursday, according to MLB.com.

Our View:The team reports Estes will be in uniform for the Padres' final game of a three-game series against the Atlanta Braves and will used to bolster a struggling bullpen. As a result, RHP Kevin Cameron will be placed on the 15-day DL with a first-degree sprained ulnar collateral ligament of his right elbow, an injury suffered just three pitches into his appearance in Tuesday's 5-3 loss to the Braves. Estes was 4-2 with an ERA of 3.67 in six starts for Triple-A Portland.
May 7, 2008
Veteran left-hander Shawn Estes , pitching well as a Triple-A starter, is still on the club's radar for a promotion before he can become a free agent May 15, notes SignOnSanDiego.com.

Our View:Much of what happens with Estes will depend on the progress of Mark Pryor and how well Will Ledezma pitches on Thursday in Atlanta.
May 6, 2008
Shawn Estes improved to 4-2 with seven innings with no earned runs allowed on Saturday for Triple-A Portland, according to MLB.com. Estes has a 3.67 ERA this season in the minors.

Our View:It is possible that the 35-year old lefty might be considered for a start on Thursday with the Padres, who are thinking of making a change in the fifth starter spot of their rotation. Wil Ledezma and Glendon Rusch are the in-house candidates for the start if the Padres opt to replace Justin Germano, who hasn't won a decision this season.
March 25, 2008
The San Diego Padres have made the final cuts to solidify their major league roster for opening day, according to MLB.com. Pitchers Shawn Estes and Adam Bass will both be move to the minor league camp along with outfielder Chip Ambres. The Padres also optioned infielders Oscar Robles, Craig Stansberry and Brian Myrow to their Triple-A affiliate in Portland.
March 17, 2008
Shawn Estes had another rough start for the Padres, and fell to 0-3 for the spring as he allowed five runs on 10 hits over 4.2 innings of work against Arizona. His ERA now sits at 15.00, and will be hard-pressed to earn a spot in the Padres' rotation at this point.
February 29, 2008
Shawn Estes got blasted for six runs in two-thirds of an inning Friday. Estes hasn't pitched since April of 2006 because of elbow surgery but is hoping to make the Padres rotation as a non-roster invitee. Obviously he didn't do himself any favors today.
February 10, 2008
Shawn Estes has emerged as a dark horse to be the Padres' fifth starter, according to the Denver Post. While the soft throwing Estes is well past his 15-minutes at the big league level, any pitcher that starts half of their games in PETCO Park has to be a NL-only fantasy consideration.
February 8, 2008
Shawn Estes will enter spring training with a clean bill of health, Padres GM Kevin Towers told the San Diego Union-Tribune. Estes hasn't pitched since undergoing reconstructive elbow surgery in June of 2006. He'll attempt to win a spot in the Padres rotation.
