Player Notes
October 6, 2008
Shawn Estes cleared waivers on Monday and decided to become a free agent, according to the Associated Press.

Our View:Estes only made it out to the hill for 43.2 innings due to a couple of injuries, and even when healthy his performance was less than ideal (4.74 ERA, 1.56 WHIP). He will likely latch on with someone because he is left-handed, but don't look for anything more than you saw from him this season.
September 11, 2008
Shawn Estes lost to the Dodgers on Wednesday night after allowing five runs and nine base runners over five innings. He also allowed two home runs in the3 outing.

Our View:If you are counting on Estes to bring home the gold, you had better be ready to settle for the bronze. He is nothing more than a rotation filler and shouldn't be looked at as a fantasy option except in NL-only leagues.
September 4, 2008
In his first start since late May, Shawn Estes was spectacular in holding the Brewers to one run over six innings in his second victory of the year.

Our View:Estes walked only one batter, but he also punched out only one hitter, in a tidy seven hit effort. He will remain in the Padres rotation the rest of the way, but expecting a repeat of tonight's effort moving forward is probably pushing it.
September 1, 2008
Shawn Estes, out since May 31st with a broken thumb, was activated from the DL on Monday, according to the Associated Press. The Padres also called up Matt Antonelli and Wade LeBlanc.

Our View:Estes has a 3.33 ERA over 24.1 innings this season, and he looked solid before getting hurt. However, given his track record, it would be a huge stretch to expect another run of consistency now that he is back with the Padres.
August 20, 2008
Shawn Estes has suffered a setback as he attempts to rehab from a broken left thumb, according to Padres.com. Estes has an infection under a fingernail that is causing him pain, thus delaying his return.

Our View:Estes has had his next start pushed back a couple days, as he tries to rid himself of the infection.
