Shawn Estes will avoid surgery on his broken left thumb, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune. Estes said, "Surgery would not speed things up. I've had a rough couple of days. This was something I was not mentally prepared for."

Our View:He is still expected to miss 6-8 weeks, and will start using a bone stimulation device Tuesday. Estes fared well this season as he went 1-1 with a 3.33 ERA and solid 1.15 WHIP over 24.1 innings.

The San Diego Padres have reportedly placed LHP Shawn Estes on the 15-day disabled list after fracturing the end of his left thumb during a fall down some stairs, according to MLB.com.

Our View:Estes suffered the fracture when he fell going down the stairs that lead from the visiting clubhouse to the dugout during San Diego's 7-3 victory in 13 innings on Friday. The Padres have reinstated RHP Carlos Guevara from the disabled list to take Estes' spot on the 25-man roster.

San Diego LHP Shawn Estes suffered his first loss of the season as the Padres fell 6-4 to Washington. Estes pitched five innings to allow four runs on four hits (all earned) with two walks and thee strikeouts.

Our View:Estes allowed his second home run of the season and surrendered his highest earned run total of the season thus far.

Shawn Estes cleared another hurdle as the issue of his elbow never came up while discussing his two-hit, 6.1-inning outing against the Mariners, reports the Union Tribune. "On paper, we should have won that game," said Estes, who departed with the Padres leading 2-1. As for himself: "My curve was not working too well (Sunday). But my two-seamer (fastball) was breaking down and away from the righties. "What is the point of throwing the breaking ball if the fastball is working like it was? Keep it as simple as you can."

Our View:Only 45 of Estes' 89 were strikes. But he issued only two walks in the no-decision. His first two starts has solidified his station with the Padres. He is now officially the No. 5 starter and will be for the rest of the year, barring an injury.
May 18, 2008
Shawn Estes held the Mariners to just a single earned run over 6.1 innings on Sunday in a no-decision.

Our View:With Mark Prior's return pushed back, Estes could be the Padres #5 starter for the foreseeable future after a second straight strong start. However, Estes just doesn't have the arsenal to keep this up, so be wary of counting on anything other than up and down performances.
