Gary Sheffield will make a decision today on whether to have surgery on his right shoulder, according to the Detroit News. "They want to meet in the morning and discuss everything," Sheffield told The Detroit News by phone. "From there, I'll either have the surgery or not. I'm not sure what's going to happen until I meet with the doctor." When asked if retirement was a possibility, Sheffield responded, "It's hard to say," he said. "It's one thing to go through rehab. It's another thing to go through surgery with rehab. That's the part where you keep asking yourself, 'What am I doing and why?'" Check back over the next day or two as we learn what Sheffield's decision is.

Gary Sheffield should know by Thursday whether he will undergo surgery on his ailing right shoulder or simply rehab the injury. "It's going to be a tough decision either way," Sheffield told the Detroit Free Press. "It's based on what they (the doctors) tell me, and then I go from there. The more times you have surgery on something, the more chances you're taking. This (would) be the third surgery I've had on this shoulder." Regardless, Sheffield's health will be a concern the remainder of his career.

Gary Sheffield was activated from the DL Thursday and was back in the starting lineup for Tigers, batting third and serving as the DH. His return was an uneventful one, as he went 0-for-3 with a walk and two strikeouts. Owners should know that Sheffield could very well struggle over the final month, especially in the power department, so be careful to keep expectations reasonable.

August 28, 2007
The Tigers hope Gary Sheffield will be ready to return from the DL when he is eligible on September 6. "That's what the thought process is," GM Dave Dombrowski said in the Detroit Free Press. "After the game (Sunday), they told me he made significant strides, but apparently he didn't feel as good (Monday) morning. We always knew that if it got to where we knew for sure that he wouldn't play (by) the middle of this week, we'd put him on the DL, because we need another person here to help us win games." Sheffield was placed on the DL Monday with a shoulder injury that has plagued him for awhile.
August 27, 2007
The Tigers placed Gary Sheffield on the 15-day disabled list Friday with a sore right shoulder, according to the AP. The move is retroactive to Wednesday. Sheffield hopes to return this season, but given how much pain he's been dealing with, nothing is set in stone.

In fact, when asked if it's possible that he might be done for the season, Sheff said, "I can't say. I really can't say," according to the Detroit Free Press. His shoulder is so sore right now, that he can't even do light exercises. He may end up undergoing surgery to repair the problem at some point, though he's holding out hope of continuing his season.
August 22, 2007
Gary Sheffield is expected to miss at least the rest of the Tigers' current homestand while he tries once and for all to calm down an aching right shoulder that has bothered him for much of the last two months, MLB.com reports. "It's time for me to shut it down and get myself right," Sheffield said, "because I'm doing myself and the team a disservice by trying to play hurt. It's one thing to be hurting and one thing to be injured. And I'm on the side of injured."

Gary Sheffield returned to action on Wednesday, going 1-for-4 at the plate. It was his first start since August 1, as he was battling a sore left shoulder. A cortisone shot Sunday seemed to do the trick, but his status for Thursday's game will depend on how the joint responds to Wednesday's action.
August 7, 2007
Gary Sheffield got a cortisone shot in his left shoulder on Sunday and should be back in the lineup within a couple of days. Sheffield, who has missed four straight games because of an ailing right shoulder, got a shot in the left shoulder because he had been overcompensating and it became aggravated. "I'm not sure I'll get all the strength back," Sheffield told the Detroit Free Press. "I'm hoping to get enough back to play." Sheffield will be a risky fantasy play until he proves he can produce despite playing at less than 100 percent.

Gary Sheffield will not need to go on the disabled list, as his shoulder injury isn’t as serious as he first feared. The AP reported that Sheffield’s collar bone was pushed out of place and causing numbness and soreness in his right shoulder. Sheffield said the injury happened when he fell on his right elbow in a collision with second baseman Placido Polanco on July 21. Sheffield began taking medicine on Thursday and started therapy and rehab on Friday.
August 2, 2007
Gary Sheffield admits he's concerned about his ailing right shoulder. "There's numbness in my grip," Sheffield told the Detroit News. "My whole right side [doesn't feel right]. Even when I'm wiggling the bat like I do, I get numbness in my hands. I don't know what's going on." Manager Jim Leyland says he'll give Sheffield some rest if that’s what the slugger needs to get healthy.

According to the Detroit News, Sheffield was to receive a cortisone shot on Wednesday night – his second one in two weeks in the same area. It's unclear how much more action Sheffield will miss, if any. He has been playing through minor pain like this for years, but fantasy owners should expect the occasional day off over the final few months of the season.

Gary Sheffield was implicated, along with Barry Bonds, during an interview of a Bay Area Laboratory Co-Operative chemist on HBO on Tuesday night. According to the Detroit News, Patrick Arnold claims both Sheffield and Bonds took "the clear," a steroid Arnold is credited with creating. Arnold pleaded guilty to conspiring to distribute steroids in 2006 and was sentenced to three months in prison. Sheffield is seemingly immune to the multiple off-the-field distractions that seem to follow him around and the steroid investigations continue to move at a snail's pace, so don't expect this to affect Sheffield's play in the near future.

Gary Sheffield has dropped the appeal of his three-game suspension and will instead serve a reduced two-game suspension on Saturday and Sunday, according to the Detroit News. June 14, 2007
Gary Sheffield says he has "no idea" when his appeal of a three-game suspension will be heard, the AP reports. Umpire Greg Gibson ejected Sheffield after the slugger argued a strike call, then broke his bat on a groundout and threw away the piece of wood still in his hands. The Tigers play nine straight games in NL parks beginning Friday, for what it's worth, visiting Philadelphia, Washington and Atlanta, so there may be some incentive for Sheffield, who's been mostly a DH this season, to serve the suspension over this time frame.

Gary Sheffield was ejected in the top of the fifth inning Thursday night by plate umpire Greg Gibson after arguing a called strike, then breaking his bat on a groundout and angrily throwing the piece of wood still in his hands, according to the AP. After running halfway to first, Sheffield whirled and came back at Gibson. Tigers manager Jim Leyland and catcher Ivan Rodriguez ran out of the dugout to restrain Sheffield, who repeatedly poked his finger toward Gibson's face. Sheffield could face and fine and/or a small suspension for his actions.

Gary Sheffield hasn't earned a hit in his past four games, so Tigers manager Jim Leyland plans to start Sheffield in the outfield Thursday in an attempt to spark his bat, according to the Detroit Free Press. "I'm trying to get him going a little bit -- try something different," Leyland said. "Change the scenery a little bit. He's having a tough time adjusting to the DH thing. He's always been a player (in the field). He's still the DH, but I'm going to play him out there a couple of games (in the four-game series in Toronto that opens tonight). He'll be more active out there, and maybe he'll get started."

Gary Sheffield returned to the Tigers on Saturday after missing time to handle a legal matter and went 2-4 and scored a run. He hadn't played since Monday. Sheffield's lawyer, Rufus Williams, said Thursday that his client "is involved in a legal proceeding for a baseball-related matter brought about by a previous agent." "He's not himself yet," manager Jim Leyland said, adding that he didn't expect Sheffield to miss any more time with the legal issue.
