September 4, 2008
Gary Sheffield's right shoulder has been sore, and he may not be able to play Thursday, according to the Detroit Free-Press.

Our View:Sheffield is hitting a disappointing .228 on the year, and his home run and RBI totals, 14 and 45 respectively, are not good enough to make fantasy owners put him in their lineups.
September 1, 2008
Gary Sheffield hit a home run against the Yankees in the second inning Monday that placed him at No. 25 on the all-time home run list, just ahead of Fred McGriff and Lou Gehrig, according to Tigers.com.

Our View:Sheffield has had a poor season by any standards, disappointing fantasy owners to the tune of a .224 batting average, 13 home runs and 43 RBI.
August 25, 2008
Manager Jim Leyland is looking ahead to 2009 regarding Gary Sheffield, according to the Detroit Free Press. Leyland said, "He's on the ball better and swinging more aggressively. I think he's improved a lot. All I need him to do next year is hit. He's not going to play the outfield. I think he's got a chance to be fine. It's a matter of centering more balls, and I think he can do that. Sheff can still be a force offensively. He can still put fear in pitchers."

Our View:Sheffield will turn 40 in November, but is signed for another season with Detroit. It is not hard to picture him having a favorable bounce back season in 2009.
August 18, 2008
Gary Sheffield had three hits, including his 13th homer, in the Tigers' 8-7 win Monday.

Our View:That's three homers and eight RBI in seven games since Sheff was placed on waivers.
August 13, 2008
Gary Sheffield reports he has no concerns about the Tigers decision to place him on waivers, according to the Associated Press. "I don't pay attention to it -- I've been on waivers plenty of times," he said Wednesday. "I don't know why it is a big deal that I've been put on waivers. That's nothing new. Lots of great players are put on waivers but it is only a story when it is someone like Manny [Ramirez] or me -- someone that people have an opinion about."

Our View:Sheffield claims to have no hopes or expectations of being traded, though the decision indicates it is a possibility. His lawyer, Rufus Williams, confirmed Sheffield hasn't asked to be dealt. Sheffield homered twice on Tuesday but is hitting just .223 with 12 homers in an injury-plagued season.
August 12, 2008
The Tigers thought a late surge would get the win, but the pitching immediately fell through to give Toronto the 6-4 win. At the dish, it was Gary Sheffield (the recently-waived Gary Sheffield) doing work, going 2-for-4 with two homers to total two RBIs and two runs scored on the night.

Our View:He's still hitting a lowly .223 on the season, but a team in need of power seems likely to give it full consideration. As we saw tonight, he is a beast when motivated.
August 12, 2008
Gary Sheffield has been put on waivers, and is available for any team to claim, according to MLive.com. However, he remains in the Tigers lineup tonight.

Our View:Sheffield had a tiff with manager Jim Leyland over playing DH exclusively and not being allowed to play in the outfield, but it's unlikely this move had anything to do with that. It probably had a lot to do with the fact that Sheffield is hitting .222 and will make $14 million next year.
August 11, 2008
Gary Sheffield wants to be used in the outfield and not just at DH, according to MLB.com. "I don't want to DH. I don't feel like a baseball player when I DH. I don't know how to be the leader that I am from the bench."

Our View:Well Sheff, how about you do better than hitting .222 with only 10 home runs in 275 AB? With numbers like that, he should just be happy that he is in the lineup no matter what spot he occupies.
August 8, 2008
Gary Sheffield is feeling good again and stated that he is no longer limited in any way by his shoulder, according to MLive.com. He has not felt this good since the first half of 2007, when he had 21 homers at the All-Star break for Detroit, and he added, "I'm back to being a threat. I've been feeling like that for awhile, but I need to be active. You lose your rhythm otherwise."

Our View:Sheffield has eight hits, one homer, and four RBI over his last six games, and looks to be a solid fantasy performer down the stretch.
July 21, 2008
Gary Sheffield went 1-for-5 on Monday, but that one hit was a three-run homer.

Our View:Sheff has two long balls in five games since the All-Star break, which is a good sign. He remains a major injury risk, but he should be useful while healthy.
July 17, 2008
Gary Sheffield hit his first homer on Thursday since June 26th.

Our View:Sheff is hitting just .219 with five home runs on the season. He endured a terrible second half last season when he hit just .203.
June 24, 2008
The Tigers found failure at the ballpark tonight, falling 8-4 to the Cardinals, though designated hitter and recently-returned-from-injury slugger Gary Sheffield did what he could to boost his mates. Sheffield went 1-for-4, hitting his fourth homer of the season to total two RBIs and one runs scored on the night.

Our View:This was Sheff's first game since May 26th, hitting his first homer since May 23rd. Now that he's back he's already making noise and hopes to get the Tigers back in the fray for the AL Central.
June 24, 2008
Gary Sheffield has recovered from his strained left oblique and has been activated from the DL, according to the AP. The team optioned Jeff Larish to Triple-A Toledo to make room on the roster for Sheffield. He will start tonight.

Our View:Sheffield was only hitting .213 with three homers over 136 at-bats prior to landing on the DL, so fantasy owners should wait until he proves effective before starting him again.
June 24, 2008
Gary Sheffield could be activated from the DL as early as Tuesday, according to the Detroit Free Press. GM Dave Dombrowski noted that Sheffield was scheduled to fly to Detroit for a meeting with team officials today. Sheffield has been on a minor league rehab assignment with Class-A Lakeland since the start of last week as he recovered from a strained left oblique.

Our View:As long as Sheffield does not suffer any more setbacks with the injury, it is likely he will rejoin the active roster soon. He has been serving as the primary DH most of the time this season, and his return could impact the playing time of rookie Jeff Larish, who is currently working as the DH against righties.
June 23, 2008
Gary Sheffield's return to the Tigers will be delayed as he missed two games over the weekend during his rehab assignment at Single-A Lakeland, according to the Detroit Free Press. He missed Friday's game to attend a graduation, and Saturday's game was rained out. Sheffield's upcoming schedule has not been set, and Manager Jim Leyland said, "I don't know how that's going to play out."

Our View:It was believed that Sheffield may rejoin the Tigers before Tuesday's series opener against the Cardinals, but now his return date in uncertain.
June 15, 2008
Gary Sheffield, who is recovering from a strained left oblique, will begin a rehab assignment with Single-A Lakeland Monday night, according to BlessYouBoys.com.

Our View:Manager Jim Leyland commented that he is going to let Sheffield tell the team when he feels ready to return. At that time, Jeff Larish will likely be shipped back to Triple-A Toledo.
June 9, 2008
Gary Sheffield has begun taking swings and is set to begin hitting live BP Tuesday, according to MLB.com. Sheff is working his way back from a strained left oblique muscle. "I can see the light at the end of the tunnel. And that's what I feel good about," he said.

Our View:It's not clear exactly how far that light is, but it's good that Sheff is coming along. We'll continue to monitor his rehab.
May 27, 2008
Detroit has placed designated hitter Gary Sheffield on the 15-day disabled list, suffering a left oblique strain during Monday's game against the Angels, according to MLB.com.

Our View:Sheffield suffered his injury starting out of the batter's box on a ground ball in his second at-bat. He pulled up lame about midway down the line, immediately turning to limp towards the dugout. To replace Sheffield, Detroit will purchase the contract of Jeff Larish from Triple-A Toledo on Wednesday. The team is expected to push Carlos Guillen into the DH role in the short-term future.
May 25, 2008
Gary Sheffield is three RBI away from tying Andre Dawson for 32nd on the all-time list, according to MLB.com.

Our View:Sheffield has registered four RBI over his last two games, with three coming last night in a 19-3 win over Minnesota.
May 22, 2008
Gary Sheffield served as the Tigers' DH and went 3-for-4 in Thursday's 9-2 win over the Mariners.

Our View:That was only his second multi-hit game in May, and he hasn't hit a home run over his last 20 games. He should remain on your bench.
May 19, 2008
The Detroit News suggests that Gary Sheffield is expected to return to the lineup for the upcoming Seattle series, but as the Tigers' designated hitter. "He'll DH Tuesday and Wednesday," said Leyland, "and I hope for a third (consecutive game on Thursday)."

Our View:Sheffield won't be playing in the outfield so during interleague games at National League parks Sheff will likely be on the bench.
May 17, 2008
Gary Sheffield is scheduled to get Saturday night off with Matt Joyce playing left field for the second straight game.

Our View:With the Tigers playing in an NL Park, Sheff is sitting against right-handers. It's possible that the veteran will be back in the lineup on Sunday when Arizona sends Randy Johnson to the mound.
May 14, 2008
The Tigers team website reports that Gary Sheffield's days as a regular outfielder appear to be over. After just over a week in left field, Sheffield was out of the lineup on Wednesday for a day off. When he returns on Thursday, however, he'll be back at designated hitter. Manager Jim Leyland made the decision and talked with Sheffield about it prior to Wednesday's game. Leyland saw signs that Sheffield is still being bothered by his right shoulder, a sign Sheffield confirmed.

Our View:Leyland believes that playing the field and hitting isn't going to help the healing process, despite Sheff's desire to be both in the field and the batters box with claims it makes him a better hitter.
May 10, 2008
Gary Sheffield will serve as the Tigers' DH against the Yankees today, according to MLB.com.

Our View:Manager Jim Leyland made the call to rest his shoulder, and to give Matt Joyce some action as the starter in left field.
May 6, 2008
Gary Sheffield commented on his move from the DH spot to left field, according to CBSsports. Sheffield said, "I think DH is a position for guys who can't do nothing else. You have to accept it in your mind. I never realized how mental it is. I was noticing fans in the stands, popcorn vendors. I was noticing things I never noticed."

Our View:Sheffield replaced Jacque Jones in left field on Tuesday, who was designated for assignment. Magglio Ordonez covered the DH spot. It remains to be seen if Sheffield's previously sore shoulder will allow him to stay in the outfield.
May 5, 2008
Gary Sheffield has been moved from the Tigers' designated hitter role into left field for tonight's game against Boston. Magglio Ordonez will serve in the DH role for Detroit.

Our View:Sheffield told manager Jim Leyland he would be more productive at the plate if he could be more involved in the game. In other words, he begged into the left field spot. Sheff is still nursing an injured shoulder, and defensively he is more of a liability than asset at this stage of his career.
May 5, 2008
Gary Sheffield is 6-for-10 with two doubles, a homer, and two RBI lifetime against Daisuke Matsuzaka, tonight's opposing hurler for Boston, according to MLB.com.

Our View:Sheffield was given the day off to rest on Sunday, and could use another good outing against Dice-K, as he is only hitting .185 over 23 games this season, with five RBI.
May 3, 2008
Detroit manager Gary Sheffield has informed the press he will be giving DH Gary Sheffield a day of rest on Sunday as the Tigers visit Minnesota, according to CBSSports.

Our View:Leyland also noted catcher Ivan Rodriguez will be getting the day off, but he suggested he could do that today. Stay tuned.
April 30, 2008
Gary Sheffield had two hits and a stolen base on Wednesday night as he continues to struggle to find his stroke given the issues with his shoulder.

Our View:In what qualifies as a hot streak in his dismal season, Sheffield is 3-for-8 over the past two nights though he has just five RBI all season. It's really hard to predict just how much he will improve given that shoulder, but we would like to think he will find a way to be successful even if he has to change his approach a bit in the process.
April 27, 2008
Detroit designated hitter Gary Sheffield continues to struggle, striking out in his final two at-bats Sunday to extend his hitless streak to 16.

Our View:Sheffield has admitted that he is playing through shoulder soreness. The question is whether he can continue to play with the injury and contribute in the process, or will future at-bats resemble his 0-16 drought.
April 25, 2008
Gary Sheffield is back in the Tigers Friday starting lineup and will serve as the designated hitter.

Our View:Few players in the league have a history of playing hurt like Sheff. The Tigers offense has heated up and the right-handed slugger returns to take advantage of potential opportunities to produce for his fantasy owners.
April 24, 2008
Gary Sheffield had some surprising news today, he might consider retiring if his shoulder doesn't come around, according to the AP. “It hurts. I can’t continue to go out there and play like that," Sheffield said. I’m not going to put myself through (more surgeries and rehabs) like the past. I’m not going to do that." He received a second cortisone shot on Wednesday to help with the pain.

Our View:Often times players talk of retirement when injured, but most often it's just talk. Sheffield is hitting only .192 on the year, and there is no doubt he is hurting, but we would be pretty shocked to see him call it quits in the middle of the season.
April 23, 2008
The Detroit Tigers report hopes of seeing Gary Sheffield in the starting lineup on Friday, according to CBSSports.com.

Our View:Sheffield has missed the last three games for the Tigers with an aching shoulder but the team believes is nearing a return to health. We will update as more information becomes available.
April 22, 2008
Gary Sheffield received cortisone shots in both shoulders on Tuesday and is expected to miss at least two more games. "I was told three days is realistic," he informs the Detroit News.

Our View:For a guy who has received probably dozens of cortisone shots in his career, we'd think he'd know the timeline by now. Anyway, fantasy owners should continue to sit Sheffield.
April 21, 2008
As expected, Gary Sheffield is not in the lineup for Monday's game against the Blue Jays. Sheffield is dealing with a sore right shoulder, and there is some speculation that he may end up on the DL. Carlos Guillen is at DH on Monday.

Our View:We already knew Sheff would be sitting out on Monday, but we simply wanted to confirm his status. We'll continue to follow his progress.
April 20, 2008
Gary Sheffield wants team doctors to check out his sore right shoulder, according to the Detroit News. He will not be in today's starting lineup against Toronto, and stated, "When you have the surgery I had, you're going to have your good days and bad days. I kind of rushed it. I have work to do. I'm just trying to get it stronger. It was major surgery, and I have to get it to a point where I'm comfortable. Obviously I'm not. want to get it looked at. I want to know what's really going on, like exactly how much scar tissue I really need to break up, because it feels strange playing baseball when you can't do what you're capable of doing. It doesn't hurt as much as it did, but it still doesn't give me the range of motion that I need. When I try to swing harder, it slows it down even more. I didn't know it was going to be this tight."

Our View:We will keep you posted as to what the doctors tell Sheffield regarding his shoulder. He is only hitting 10-for-52 so far this season.
April 15, 2008
Gary Sheffield, who is playing through some shoulder pain, hit his first home run of the season on Tuesday.

Our View:Sheff, who helped the Tigers to their second straight victory, had only one RBI coming into tonight's game. Sad isn't a strong enough word for what the Tigers offense has been. After two victories, and a combined 17 runs in the last two games, Detroit is poised to have some of their big bats break out.
April 14, 2008
Gary Sheffield stated that the shoulder that he had surgery on in the off-season is bothering him right now, according to the Detroit Free Press. He noted, "I just have to keep putting in my work. I can't get discouraged." Sheffield also said the shoulder has bothered him more than he expected. But, on Saturday, some scar tissue in the shoulder tore, which he thinks will improve his range of motion.

Our View:Sheffield is hitting 5-for-28 so far, and hopefully he can get get stronger as the season progresses.
April 12, 2008
Gary Sheffield is expected to be in the Tigers' lineup today, according to MLB.com. Sheffield took Friday off after experiencing swelling in his injured right ring finger on the Tigers' Friday morning flight from Boston.

Our View:He is only hitting .190 over 21 at-bats this season, and the injury won't help matters.
April 7, 2008
Gary Sheffield returned to the lineup on Sunday night after missing a couple games due to a torn tendon at the top of his left right finger. He went 1-for-3 with a walk against the White Sox. Sheffield will wear a splint for six weeks, but he takes it off and tapes the finger when batting, the Detroit News explains.
April 4, 2008
Gary Sheffield will not play on Friday, but he is not going on the DL yet. Sheffield injured his left ring finger on Thursday. "He does have a torn tendon," manager Jim Leyland tells the Detroit News. "But not in an area where the trainers think it will affect his grip on the bat. When the swelling goes down, he should be able to play."
April 4, 2008
The degree to which Gary Sheffield's finger swells overnight will dictate his status going forward, according to The Detroit News. Sheffield jammed his left ring finger while sliding into second base in Thursday's game, tearing a tendon in the finger. Detroit has a day game Friday, so the chances of Sheffield playing would seem to be very slim. We'll keep you posted on his status.
April 3, 2008
Gary Sheffield, who tore a tendon in his left ring finger Thursday when he slid into second base, left open the possibility that he would play Friday, but manager Jim Leyland said it's unlikely the DH will be available, according to the Detroit Free Press. Sheffield wore a splint on the finger after the game and said he had "no feeling" in the finger immediately after the injury. "I think I hit it on the base, but I'm not sure," he said. "I didn't notice it until I got in the dugout, looked at it, and it looked deformed." Sheff is as tough as nails, but this sounds like something that will keep him out of the lineup at least a few days. A DL stint is certainly possible. Marcus Thames would likely see the bulk of the time at DH if Sheffield misses significant time.
April 3, 2008
Gary Sheffield tore a tendon in his left ring finger in the eighth inning of Thursday's game while sliding into second base, the AP reports. "He would have not been able to hit if we came around to him in the ninth," Tigers manager Jim Leyland said. "I don't know how serious it was, but he couldn't bend it." There is still no word on how much time Sheffield will miss. If he does miss time, Marcus Thames figures to gain significant at-bats.
March 11, 2008
Gary Sheffield finally returned to action Tuesday after missing a few games due to leg cramps. It was almost as if he wasn't there in statistical terms, since he was 0-for-3 in the game, but it's good to see him back in the mix, nonetheless. Let's hope he can stay in the lineup and get ready for the regular season now.
March 9, 2008
Gary Sheffield skipped his third straight game on Sunday due to leg cramps, but he should return in a couple of days, according to the AP. "I’d be worried more if he was the shortstop, where you’ve got to play, take groundballs, make the double play," manager Jim Leyland said. "He’s probably not going to play the outfield to start with. If he’s able to hit to start with, that’s good enough for right now." The malady doesn't appear to be any big deal, but when you're talking about a 39-year-old, it's still something to pay attention to.
March 8, 2008
Leg cramps will keep Gary Sheffield from taking part in Saturday's exhibition game, according to the Detroit Free Press. "We're not going to take a chance with it," manager Jim Leyland said. Sheffield is 0-for-11 this spring, but clearly his health is of much more relevance right now.
February 18, 2008
Gary Sheffield will apparently fill the role of DH this season for the Tigers and only rarely be used in the field according to a report on MLB.com. "I don't expect Sheffield to play in the outfield much, particularly in the start [of the season]," manager Jim Leyland said. "I want Sheffield to be ready to hit, and I'm not going to do anything to jeopardize that off the bat. He likes to play the outfield, but I have to watch that shoulder and make sure we can maximize his offensive skills." Sheffield should once again be a productive bat given his all-around offensive game, but his value will continue to be limited if he only qualifies at DH.
February 12, 2008
Gary Sheffield said that he is swinging the bat “pain-free,” according to the Free Press. Sheffield began a rehab program in late November after undergoing shoulder surgery in October. Sheffield and the club believed his surgery last fall was to “clean up” his shoulder. But the surgeon found additional, unexpected damage: a torn labrum. Now it’s time to envision the healthy Sheffield in a lineup that has gained Miguel Cabrera and Edgar Renteria. If you take Sheffield’s performance in the 2 1/2 months before his injury, then project it over a full season, he would amass 50 homers and 135 RBIs.
