Player Notes
September 26, 2008
Scott Rolen went 2-for-3 with an RBI in Friday's 3-0 win over Baltimore. The game was called in the seventh inning due to rain. He hit a single and a double, his 30th of the season.

Our View:Rolen has 50 RBI for the season, with 11 coming in September.
September 20, 2008
Scott Rolen went 2-for-4 with a home run in the Blue Jays 6-3 win over Boston on Saturday.

Our View:Rolen has actually had a solid month of September, hitting .299 with two home runs and eight RBI. His fantasy value is slim to none for the rest of his career because he'll never again have a healthy shoulder.
September 17, 2008
Scott Rolen had a big night at the plate in the Blue Jays' 8-7 win over the Orioles. In four at-bats Rolen had two doubles and a triple.

Our View:Rolen is still one of the best defensive third baseman in the league but the days of Rolen being a productive hitter have come to end. In 2008 he has only hit nine home runs and is averaging .253. These numbers are the reason why Rolen is no longer a formidable fantasy asset.
September 4, 2008
Scott Rolen believes he can still be a productive major league player now that he has made some adjustments to his batting stance, according to the Toronto Star. Rolen lowered his hands to account for range of motion issues that have occurred due to his shoulder woes.

Our View:It's clear that Rolen will probably never be the same player he had been. His days of being a productive offensive player for fantasy owners are likely over.
August 28, 2008
Scott Rolen was out of the Jays lineup on Thursday night as his shoulder continues to bother him, according to MLB.com. Rolen hopes to be in the starting lineup on Friday when the Jays take on the Yankees.

Our View:Rolen's days of effectiveness at the plate appear to be finished, at least for this season. He struggles to do the most rudimentary things at the plate on most days, a fact that the Jays can't be too happy about considering that Rolen is due $26 million over the next two seasons.
August 26, 2008
The Blue Jays activated Scott Rolen from the DL Tuesday. He has been out with soreness in his left shoulder.

Our View:Rolen could help out AL-only squads a bit, but that's assuming his shoulder doesn't act up again.
August 19, 2008
Scott Rolen is currently rehabbing his sore left shoulder in Florida. The trainers are trying to "break up" the tissue in his shoulder to provide the third baseman with more flexibility, manager Cito Gaston informs MLB.com. Gaston is not sure if Rolen will be able to return to the lineup by next Tuesday, August 26.

Our View:Fantasy owners shouldn't be waiting on Rolen, who has a long history of left shoulder injuries.
August 10, 2008
Third baseman Scott Rolen was placed on the 15-day disabled list with continued soreness in his left shoulder, according to MLB.com.

Our View:Think the Blue Jays might want Troy Glaus back? Rolen's shoulder has been a problem for four seasons now, as he has undergone surgery on it three times since 2005. He'll clearly never be the same player he once was, and isn't someone who needs to be on fantasy rosters.
August 10, 2008
Scott Rolen was scratched from Sunday's lineup due to his sore left shoulder, according to the AP.

Our View:He was replaced at third base by Marco Scutaro. Rolen is not hurting that much, but doesn't have a lot of mobility. The team is trying to get it stretched out so he can have more. He should be avoided in standard mixed leagues until he proves he can be effective again.
August 8, 2008
Scott Rolen will not be in the lineup on Saturday as the team will give his sore left shoulder a rest, according to MLB.com. "I'll try to give a day game off after a night game," manager Cito Gaston said.

Our View:Rolen is clearly a shadow of his former self at the plate where he has a mere seven home runs and a .250 batting average, terrible production for a player who used to regularly hit .280 with 25 home runs. Don't expect that type of production to return this season.
August 7, 2008
Batting in the eight hole, Toronto third baseman Scott Rolen went 1-for-3, scored two runs and drove in two as the Jays beat the A's 6-4.

Our View:Rolen is a shell of what he used to be offensively, and he has nearly no value in fantasy leagues anymore.
August 5, 2008
Scott Rolen is listed as the starter for Tuesday's game against the A's. He has missed the last two contests due to pain in his left shoulder.

Our View:Rolen has shown very little pop since late June, and we can't help but wonder how long his oft-injured shoulder has been bothering him. Fantasy owners should not expect much over the final two months.
August 4, 2008
Toronto third baseman Scott Rolen will not play tonight as he rests his ailing left shoulder, according to MLB.com.

Our View:Rolen has not been good this season, hitting just .254 with seven home runs and 36 RBI, and he hit a horrid .163 in July. His glory days in fantasy baseball are over, and should you have him in an AL-only league, remember that Rolen will be rested a lot unless his shoulder health improves.
August 1, 2008
Scott Rolen returned to the lineup on Friday after spending two days on the bench to rest his injured shoulder, and in his first at-bat he homered, according to MLB.com.

Our View:Rolen apparently isn't in pain, but his range of motion continues to be limited which hinders his ability to generate bat speed which has led to his .163 batting average over his past 23 appearances.
July 30, 2008
Scott Rolen has been scratched from the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Rays with a sore left shoulder, according to the AP.

Our View:Rolen should have been on your bench for today anyway, as he is hitless over his last five games.
July 30, 2008
Scott Rolen plans to skip some games and cut back on his batting practice while undergoing an “extensive” rehab program for his surgically repaired left shoulder. He said, "I’ve been having some shoulder trouble, some problems with it. Not strength, not flexibility, not surgery. Nothing like that. Mechanically it’s not functioning right. The therapist looked at, the doctor looked at it. I talked to Cito and J.P. and we’re going to try to get some extra days off. I’ll keep playing, keep going out there and doing what I can do, back off in the cage a little bit."

Our View:Rolen is hitless in his last five games as well, and should be left on your bench for the upcoming fantasy week.
July 25, 2008
Scott Rolen had a modest six-game hitting streak that ended on Friday in Toronto's victory over Seattle. He went 0-for-5 on the evening.

Our View:Trading Troy Glaus doesn't seem like such a good deal for Toronto now, as Rolen continues the mediocrity he's been mired in since 2005.
June 26, 2008
Scott Rolen hit his third home run in four games, cranking a two-run shot off of Cincinnati's Edison Volquez in Toronto's 7-1 victory over the Reds. Rolen has hit half of his six home runs during that span.

Our View:Rolen's days as a fantasy stalwart seem to be over, as he has hit just 14 home runs over the last two seasons, covering 593 at-bats. That is one home run for every 42 AB, hardly the stuff that will win anybody their fantasy league.
June 24, 2008
With 14 runs scored on the night, more than a few of the Blue Jays are enjoying the rewards of a strong night at the plate in support of the 14-1 win over Cincinnati. The top dog was third baseman Scott Rolen , going 2-for-4 with his 15th double and fifth home run of the season, totaling four RBIs and two runs scored on the night.

Our View:Rolen came in hitting just .239 through June, but he now carries home runs in consecutive games with six RBIs to boot.
June 13, 2008
Scott Rolen went deep for the third time this year and the Toronto Blue Jays beat the Cubs 3-2 on Friday night.

Our View:Rolen is beginning to drive the ball, and as the air warms the third baseman should power up.
May 9, 2008
Toronto's third baseman Scott Rolen went 2-for-4 in Friday's loss to the Indians.

Our View:Rolen now has seven hits in his last 13 at-bats. He's healthy and seeing the ball well in his 13th game since coming off the disabled list.
May 9, 2008
Scott Rolen has hit safely in 10 of his last 12 games, according to MLB.com. He has five hits over his last two outings.

Our View:Rolen is hitting .318 over 12 games, with two homers and eight RBI. He also contributed one stolen base. He is proving to be a solid acquisition for the Blue Jays, as well as fantasy squads. He is in good form since returning from injury.
May 7, 2008
Scott Rolen hit his second home run of the season on Wednesday night as he went 2-for-4 with one run scored and two RBI for the Jays.

Our View:This was the second time in 11 games that Rolen had multiple hits in a game, and it helped to break up a 1-for-9 spell. Rolen still has a lot to prove, but it seems like he finally might be rounding back into shape.
April 27, 2008
Scott Rolen homered and drove in two runs in his third game back from the disabled list.

Our View:Rolen, who was activated Friday from the disabled list after fracturing his right middle finger in spring training, homered in the first and has four RBI in three games.
April 25, 2008
Scott Rolen was activated Friday from the disabled list, this according to the Associated Press. Rolen has yet to play this season after injuring a finger in spring training. Rolen is in the starting lineup at third base and is batting sixth in the order.

Our View:Rolen hurt the finger on March 23 in a fielding drill and had surgery to implant a pin, then another surgery to remove it.
April 25, 2008
Scott Rolen is expected to be activated from the DL in time for Friday's game against the Royals, according to the AP. Rolen has been on the shelf since suffering a non-displaced fracture of his right middle finger during fielding drills before a Grapefruit League game on March 23.

Our View:The Jays have received little production at third base from Marco Scutaro, Joe Inglett, and John McDonald, as the trio has combined to hit a mere .236 with no homers and nine RBI. Rolen will ultimately be a sizable upgrade at the position, but he went 0-for-9 on his rehab assignment, and you should wait before considering him for your lineups.
April 24, 2008
Scott Rolen will likely return from his broken middle finger on Friday, this according to the AP. “I’m ready to play,” Rolen said. “I still have a pretty significant bone bruise. I can feel it when I throw, feel it when I hit. I think my options are, take a month and do nothing and wait for it to heal or play. It’s time to play.”

Our View:Well that's a ringing endorsement. Sounds like Rolen isn't sure what he can do, and given that he went 0-for-9 on his rehab assignment, we would caution against anyone counting on Rolen until he proves he is back in the swing of things.
April 23, 2008
Scott Rolen went 0-for-3 in a rehab start with Class-A Dunedin on Tuesday, according to MLB.com. He sat out Monday's game with flu-like symptoms, but is expected to return to the Blue Jays some time during their 10-day road trip.

Our View:He will start at third base when he returns, hence pushing Marco Scutaro out of the spot. He could post quality numbers for Toronto, and is worth keeping tabs on, especially if you need help at third base.
April 22, 2008
Scott Rolen could be back with the Blue Jays before the end of the current road trip. "If all goes well," manager John Gibbons informs MLB.com. "As a matter of fact, that's what we're hoping." Rolen has logged three minor league rehab games as he returns from a broken right middle finger. The Blue Jays' road trip runs through May 1.

Our View:If Rolen comes back this weekend, fantasy owners could obviously get him into their lineups for the next period. It sounds like that's the best-case scenario.
April 20, 2008
Scott Rolen suited up with Class-A Dunedin today for his first Minor League rehab appearance since the third baseman broke his right middle finger, and is one step closer to joining the Jays, according to MLB.com. Team GM J.P. Ricciardi commented that the plan was for Rolen to appear in Minor League games at third base on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday to continue to test his recovering finger. Following Tuesday's appearance, Ricciardi stated the team will re-evaluate Rolen's status. The team is hoping he can make a swift return, especially following today's release of Frank Thomas.

Our View:He will start at third base when he returns.
April 16, 2008
Scott Rolen could return in about two weeks as a best-case scenario, according to the Toronto Star. Manager John Gibbons commented that he's pleased by what he's seen of Rolen during these two games in Baltimore, as he is recovering from a broken finger. Gibbons added, "I thought he looked really good. He looks ahead of where I'd expect him to be (after watching him take batting practice with the team)." Rolen will return to Florida today to continue his rehab.

Our View:This is favorable news, and it looks like he is still on pace to return by the end of the month.
April 14, 2008
Scott Rolen showed up in the Blue Jays clubhouse on Monday night. He informs the Toronto Star that he's ahead of schedule on his rehab. Rolen is throwing (but not fielding), and he took batting practice on Monday. He is out due to a broken right middle finger and could be back by the end of the month.

Our View:We'll all be happy when someone other than Marco Scutaro and Joe Inglett are holding down the hot corner for the Blue Jays. We'll continue to monitor Rolen's progress.
April 7, 2008
Scott Rolen will have the pin removed from his broken right middle finger on Monday, and he remains 2-4 weeks away from returning, the Toronto Star reports. Marco Scutaro is starting in his place.
March 27, 2008
Scott Rolen could be sidelined until May due to his broken right middle finger injury, according to MLB.com. Dr. Thomas Graham inserted a pin in the tip of Rolen's finger and he is scheduled to have it taken out on April 7. At that time, it is unclear how much time it will take Rolen to return to the lineup, but Rolen said Graham believed the third baseman could be out until late April or early May. Rolen added, "He gave a four-to-six week window from the time of surgery. We'll all hopefully be optimistic and cut that down as much as we can in the right way, the smart way."
March 24, 2008
Scott Rolen had surgery on Monday to insert a screw into his broken finger, this according to the AP. “It will be in there for 14 days,” general manager J.P. Ricciardi said. “Then they will take the screw out. Then he can start moving his hand and it’s tolerance at that point.” Initial reports pegged the time for a return as anywhere from 2-6 weeks, but given the news of this surgery, two weeks just isn't going to happen. Marc Scutaro figures to play third base until Rolen returns.
March 23, 2008
Scott Rolen broke his finger during a fielding drill Sunday, and might not be available for Opening Day, this according to ESPN. Rolen injured the finger taking grounders during a morning field drill. "It ripped his nail completely off his finger," general manager J.P. Ricciardi said. Rolen broke the bone above the top knuckle on his right middle finger. It's unclear how long he will be out. A normal recovery time of a non-displaced fracture is anywhere from 2-6 weeks.
March 19, 2008
Scott Rolen went 2-for-2 against Boston, and raised his spring average to .346. Rolen will have a chance to drive in a favorable amount of runs in the Jays' lineup.
March 5, 2008
Scott Rolen has batted second in the Jays lineup the past two games, though manager John Gibbons says that it is just so that Rolen can pick up more AB, this according to MLB.com. "We're trying to get him at least three [at-bats] a day," Gibbons said. "Right now, at this stage, five innings is his limit that we're going with. No, we're not looking at [Rolen batting second in the regular season]." Rolen had only eight HR in 392 AB last season, and the Jays need him to do a whole lot better than that this season since he will hit in a run producing slot in the order.
February 25, 2008
Scott Rolen is ready to take on the new challenge of proving that his surgically repaired shoulder is healthy enough to allow him to return to his former all-star self in Toronto this season, according to a report on the Philadelphia Enquirer. Rolen was limited to just 392 AB and eight home runs last season, but he appears fit and ready to replace the power that Troy Glaus took with him to St. Louis as the other party involved in the trade.
January 14, 2008
Scott Rolen and Troy Glaus both passed their physicals Monday, which finalizes the swap for the two third basemen. Rolen hit .265 with just eight homers in 392 at-bats last year. He's coming back from shoulder surgery.
January 12, 2008
FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal is reporting that the Cardinals and Blue Jays are going to swap third basemen, with Scott Rolen heading north and Troy Glaus to the midwest. Both players are coming off surgeries: Rolen to his right shoulder and Glaus to his left foot. The deal is pending both passing a physical, which isn't a given since both just got cut open.
