Rockies GM Dan O'Dowd shot down a report in the LA Times that the Rockies and Angels were having trade talks regarding Todd Helton, according to the Rocky Mountain News. "There is absolutely nothing there," O'Dowd said. "I haven't talked to (general manager) Bill Stoneman or anyone with the Angels since the winter meetings. I have no idea who came up with that story."

The Angels were in talks with the Rockies on Wednesday about a Todd Helton deal, but it ultimately fell through, according to the LA Times. The proposed deal had Helton going to the Angels, with Chone Figgins, Casey Kotchman and Erick Aybar going to Colorado. The Rockies offered to pay a portion of the $90 million left on Helton's contract, but it apparently wasn't enough.

Todd Helton will be rested more in 2007 as the team tries to keep him sharp throughout the year, according to the AP. Helton has dealt with acute terminal ileitis, which causes fatigue. "With the volume of games that he's played and the intensity that he plays with, there's a wear-and-tear factor that I can't even appreciate," manager Clint Hurdle said. "We want to find a way to capitalize on his productivity and that's what we've talked about for 2007, setting the schedule up prior to the season and following it with more ample time down for him."

"It would be different if I was hitting .400, then I would have more say in the matter," said Helton. "I told (manager Clint Hurdle) he should hit me ninth."

Helton has just seven hits in his past 35 at-bats and was replaced by Ryan Shealy in the starting lineup. "When I was first told, I was upset because I want to play, but when you look at it from a team standpoint, it's a good idea," he said. "I hadn't had a day off in a while, and we are off (today), so it's two days in a row."

Todd Helton says that his swings feels better now than when it did just before he went on the 15-day disabled list with an illness, according to the Rocky Mountain News. In the final five games before going on the DL, he was just 4-for-17. "I was lost before, so I feel a lot better," Helton said. "I feel like I've slowed things down a lot and got back to what I've been working on in spring training." Helton is expected to be activated from the disabled list tonight.

Rockies trainer Keith Dugger said he'd like Todd Helton to play five innings tonight for Triple-A Colorado Springs, seven innings Wednesday and nine innings on Friday before being activated on Saturday, according to the Rocky Mountain News. However, that timetable could be moved up a day depending on Helton's performance.

He's responded well to treatment the last few days, as the pain and swelling in his small intestine has diminished.

The stomach illness of Todd Helton was diagnosed on Tuesday as acute terminal ileitis, which is inflammation that specifically localizes to the end of the intestine, according to the AP. There is still no timetable for his return. The doctor prescribed more rest for Helton before he can begin exercising again.

The team said he was at home "resting comfortably with his family." Helton was hospitalized Friday with severe lower abdominal pain and a fever. Rockies officials hope to get a diagnosis of what's causing his severe abdominal pain by tonight or tomorrow. Helton will be re-evaluated Saturday after the results of testing performed Friday become available. "We really don't have a diagnosis at this point in time," trainer Keith Dugger said. He attributes it to the work of massage therapist Yoshii Hiro Nishi. "It has flared up a little, but I have been able to get it under control," Helton said. "The big thing for me is Yoshii. He's unbelievable. He knows what he is doing." Helton hit .320-20-79 last season.

Todd Helton had successful arthroscopic surgery to remove a loose body in his right elbow on Monday, according to the AP. The operation corrected an injury Helton sustained while working out at Coors Field last week. "This was a minor procedure that we expect will sideline Todd for a couple of weeks," Rockies general manager Dan O'Dowd said. "We anticipate him being completely recovered for the start of spring training."
