Manager Terry Francona said Thursday that Jason Varitek may be only a week away from returning from arthroscopic surgery on his left knee, according to the Boston Herald. Varitek initially was going to join the team in Seattle today, but the Sox decided it would benefit him more if he remained in Boston. "He thinks he’s about a week away from playing," Francona said. "Sept. 1 is going to be pretty damn close. Does he need (to go to) Triple A for a day or two? It will depend on how he feels."

"He's trying to do as much baseball as he can, like throwing, so, when he comes [back], he doesn't have to wait another week to do that stuff. He was throwing off a chair like the third day [after surgery]. He's trying to do as much of that stuff as possible. He has to get rid of all the swelling."
