Jason Varitek has been offered salary arbitration by the Red Sox, according to the Boston Globe.

Our View:Varitek is a Type-A free agent, so the Red Sox would receive a first round pick and a sandwich pick in the 2009 draft if he declines the arbitration offer. He likely will, as he covets at least a two-year deal.
November 27, 2008
The Red Sox will reportedly offer Jason Varitek arbitration and it is highly unlikely that he will accept, according to the Boston Herald.

Our View:Varitek was reportedly looking for at least a two-year deal. He's still a decent defensive option but his offense has really taken a downturn lately, as he hit just .220 in 2008 and only drove in 43 runs.
November 26, 2008
With the assumption Jason Varitek may not return to Boston, several clubs have offered catchers on the trading block, according to the Boston Herald.

Our View:Brian Schneider, Miguel Montero, John Buck, Ramon Hernandez, Bengie Molina, Carlos Santana, Kelly Shoppach, Victor Martinez, Jesus Flores, Kenji Johjima, Jeff Clement, Yorvit Torrealba, were all reportedly being shopped to Boston, as well as the previously mentioned Mike Napoli and Jeff Mathis. In return, clubs are likely asking for Justin Masterson, Clay Buchholz, or Lars Anderson.

Agent Scott Boras stated that Jason Varitek does not intend to be reduced to a backup role in 2009, according to the Hot Stove Blog on MLB.com. Boras added, "Varitek intends on being a full-time player for many years to come. He's in great shape. His defense, his game-calling skills, his leadership skills are extraordinary and at the highest level. There's no catcher that has a higher win-loss percentage starting a game than Jason Varitek. Any reports of anyone saying otherwise are inaccurate."

Our View:Varitek is still among the best catchers in the majors, but his offensive skills are on the decline. Boras still hasn't held forrmal discussions with Boston GM Theo Epstein regarding Varitek.
November 25, 2008
Jason Varitek has denied reports that he received a one-year contract offer from the Red Sox, according to MLive.com. There is talk that the Detroit Tigers may have interest in the veteran backstop.

Our View:Varitek is still one of the better defensive catchers in the league but his offense continues to slide each and every year.
