Player Notes
December 1, 2008
On Monday, the Cardinals did not offer closer Jason Isringhausen salary arbitration, according to MLB.com.

Our View:Isringhausen is coming off elbow surgery and still says he wants to pitch. If he does it will probably not be with the Cardinals
November 25, 2008
Jason Isringhausen will meet with the Cardinals' team doctor next week to have his surgically repaired elbow examined and to get clearance to begin upper-body workouts and throwing, according to the St. Louis POst Dispatch.

Our View:Isringhausen has received interest from four teams, including the Cardinals. If it was up to him he would like to be the Cardinals closer.
November 1, 2008
Jason Isringhausen has filed for free agency, according to MLB.com.

Our View:He lost his closing role during the 2008 season, and was placed on the DL for the final six weeks due to an elbow injury. The Cardinals have shown some interest to bring him back, but it is unclear how much room they will have in their 2009 bullpen.
September 14, 2008
Isringhausen, returning from elbow surgery, plans to pitch in 2009, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports. "I'm sure I'm going to play," Isringhausen said. "I'm going to go through the rehab so that I can make that decision, but right now I plan on playing. We'll see how it goes from here."

Our View:Isringhausen is a pending free agent and still in search of his 300th career save. After this struggles this season, it would be surprising if someone relied on him to be a closer next season.
September 6, 2008
Jason Isringhausen will have surgery on his injured right elbow (partially torn tendon) next week, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Our View:He wants to pitch next season but it is a matter as to whether or not his body is able. His contract with the Cardinals expires after this season. The surgery will reportedly allow him to recover in time for spring training.
September 3, 2008
Jason Isringhausen has been transferred from the 15 to the 60-day DL, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. The team needed to make room on the roster for their wave of promotions from the minors, including pitcher Jason Motte.

Our View:Isringhausen was not coming back this season due to a torn tendon in his right elbow.
August 24, 2008
Reports out of St. Louis indicate closer Jason Isringhausen, recently diagnosed with a torn flexor muscle near his right elbow, is pondering his ability to complete the rehabilitation process and may be considering retirement from professional baseball, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Our View:On Tuesday, team medical supervisor Dr. George Paletta verified the diagnosis. Isringhausen spent Wednesday at home pondering whether he should seek surgery and try to rehab his way back to the major leagues or walk away from a big-league career.
August 20, 2008
Jason Isringhausen's injury is believed to be career-theatening, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. He has a torn flexor muscle near his right elbow. Team medical supervisor Dr. George Paletta confirmed the diagnosis to GM John Mozeliak Tuesday night after reading the results from a MRI of the elbow. The tear is located to the inside of Isringhausen’s elbow, and causes him problems gripping the ball and flexing his wrist. Rest was advised but surgery could eventually become necessary should Isringhausen want to extend his career.

Our View:He is the Cardinals' all-time leader with 217 saves. He has 293 saves overall for his career.
August 19, 2008
St. Louis Cardinals RP Jason Isringhausen (elbow) could be done for the rest of the season, according to MLB.com.

Our View:An MRI and exam revealed right elbow tendinitis and a partial tendon tear in his flexor group. The Cardinals announced Isringhausen's test results following Tuesday's game against Pittsburgh. Manager Tony La Russa anticipates that Isringhausen will miss the remainder of the season. No ligament damage was found during Isringhausen's exam.
August 7, 2008
In all likelihood, the St. Louis Cardinals are not going to re-sign Jason Isringhausen for next season, and MLB.com is reporting that no one should be surprised if the Cleveland Indians take a long, hard look at him.

Our View:Haven't the Indians had enough of washed-up closers after Joe Borowski? Despite his decent performance today, it is abundantly clear to anyone who has watched him pitch that Isringhausen simply cannot get it done in the ninth inning any longer.
August 6, 2008
The Cardinals will go to a closer by committee approach after Jason Isringhausen's latest blowup, according to the AP. Manager Tony La Russa still thinks Izzy can be a useful piece of the bullpen. "Oh yeah, I definitely do," the manager said. "I think he's got a lot he can offer us."

Our View:The Cards added youngster Chris Perez to the pen Wednesday, and he could get a crack at the job. It sounds like La Russa will play the matchups, though.
July 28, 2008
Jason Isringhausen will return to the closer's role according to MLB.com. He is 1-5 with a 5.84 ERA this season.

Our View:Izzy buckled badly in the role the last time we saw him there. In nine July appearances, he has a 6.23 ERA and we caution you to put him in your lineups. Still, they have a favorable series matchup with the Braves coming up and he could notch a few saves this week. The move is more of a reaction to Ryan Franklin's failings than Izzy's successes.
July 13, 2008
Jason Isringhausen will start to get some chances to close out games, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. "He's healthy, so now he has to go out there and show he's the best guy. That way he's earned it, and it's not like somebody gave it to him," said manager Tony LaRussa.

Our View:Unfortunately for Isringhausen, he got that chance last night and blew it, giving up three earned runs in one-third of an inning in the Cardinals 12-11 loss to the Pirates. Don't insert him back in your fantasy lineup quite yet.
July 9, 2008
While Ryan Franklin is still considered the Cardinals' primary closer, skipper Tony La Russa said it is no longer automatic that Franklin will be the ninth inning option, this according to the team website. When Franklin pitched the eighth inning of a tie game at home on Saturday, it indicated that Jason Isringhausen will begin to see some ninth inning opportunities. "You just keep pitching [Isringhausen], and he's going to pitch in critical situations," La Russa said. "And you keep evaluating on a game-to-game basis who's available and who should pitch when. What's a timetable for? What's the need for a timetable?"

Our View:Since returning from the disabled list, Isringhausen has been effective. The report noted that it's just a matter of time before Izzy is reinstated to his former role.
July 1, 2008
Jason Isringhausen figures to avoid the DL with his injured right knee, and he is now working on finding the proper brace to wear on the hill, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Our View:Izzy worked with a brace that he deemed too bulky, so on Monday he used a lighter version to protect the sprain. He still hopes to reclaim his closers role at some point.
June 27, 2008
Jason Isringhausen underwent an MRI on his ailing right knee on Friday and could be headed back to the DL, according to CardinalsBlog.

Our View:Isringhausen himself commented he was told he has a strained ligament, a strained tendon and a strain of the knee capsule. We will keep you posted on his status.
June 22, 2008
Jason Isringhausen ended up loading the bases before wiggling out of the jam on Sunday against the Red Sox, according to MLB.com. "I put myself in that pressure situation, but...I was able to make good pitches when I needed to. I walked a couple guys, but I got behind them, so I'm not going to give in to them."

Our View:With Ryan Franklin far from dominating since taking over the closers role, it might just be a matter of time before Izzy is once again put into the closers role as today was a big step toward reclaiming the role.
June 18, 2008
The Cardinals report reliever Jason Isringhausen returned to active duty on Tuesday night, but the team still intends to ease him back into the fold and will give him more work in the bullpen to insure he is as healthy as can, according to MLB.com.

Our View:The right-hander pitched around an error in the ninth inning on Tuesday, and he hit a batter. But he did not allow any runs, hits or walks in his first game back. He pitched in a close game, with St. Louis trailing by one run. However, manager Tony LaRussa tells reporters he is going to be choosing his spots carefully when giving Isringhausen the call, at least for now.
June 17, 2008
Jason Isringhausen worked a scoreless inning Tuesday in his first outing since being activated from the DL.

Our View:It's not clear at this point when, or if, Izzy will regain his closer gig. He will likely pitch in a setup role initially and could get his old job back if he shows he is over his funk.
June 14, 2008
The Cardinals surprisingly activated Jason Isringhausen from the 15-day DL on Saturday, the AP reports. He had been scheduled for a bullpen session. Isringhausen hadn't pitched since May 15 due to a right hand laceration. He had recently lost his closer's role. General manager John Mozeliak says Isringhausen will work in middle relief for the time being.

Our View:We all know the injury was basically a front for Izzy to clear his head and work on his stuff, but this news is still a bit surprising. Ryan Franklin has been okay, but Izzy has a chance to regain his closer's job if he can find his old groove.
June 14, 2008
The Cardinals delayed Jason Isringhausen's throwing session by one day, and he will work on Saturday. The reliever could face live hitters, and if all goes well, he could come off the DL early next week, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.

Our View:The Cards haven't indicated if Izzy would return as the closer or if he'd need to prove himself before pushing Ryan Franklin. We'll continue to follow the reliever's progress.
June 12, 2008
Jason Isringhausen is scheduled to throw on Friday in front of the Cardinals' brass, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. If that goes favorably, he could be activated from the DL as early as this weekend. He noted that his mechanics are corrected, and his confidence restored.

Our View:He deemed himself ready to return to the Cardinals' bullpen when he returns, if not right away as the closer.
June 7, 2008
Jason Isringhausen, who is recovering from a right hand laceration, will begin a rehab assignment on Monday at Single-A Palm Beach, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Our View:The team is yet to set a timetable for his return to the Cardinals, or what his role may be with the team, as he blew five save opportunities this season.
June 4, 2008
Jason Isringhausen could begin a minor league rehab assignment as soon as next week, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. GM John Mozeliak said, "He's definitely doing things that are encouraging. He's feeling better. Based on what happens in his next throw, we may consider a rehab. Things are definitely moving forward."

Our View:He has been on the DL since May 16 due to sustaining a right hand laceration after punching a clubhouse television in Milwaukee. The team is yet to set a timetable for his return to the Cardinals, or what his role may be with the team, as he blew five save opportunities this season.
May 22, 2008
Jason Isringhausen is scheduled to throw off a mound on Friday, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. He landed on the DL last Friday with a laceration and infection of his pitching hand.

Our View:Friday's session is considered the first step in what could be as much as a six-week rehabilitation from his hand condition and mental strain associated with a rough couple of weeks. Cardinals' GM John Mozeliak last week estimated the process would take two to six weeks. Manager Tony La Russa then voiced optimism that Isringhausen could be available after 15 days, but others within the organization have described La Russa's view as overly optimistic.
May 16, 2008
Updating an earlier report, the Cardinals have in fact placed Jason Isringhausen on the 15-day DL with what is being called a lacerated pitching hand, according to The Sports Network.

Our View:There is no official word on how Izzy injured his hand, but a report is circulating that he injured himself when he punched a TV in the locker room, twice, on May 9th, meaning that he pitched three times since the incident. When will pitchers learn to punch things with their non-pitching hand, or better yet to be adult about things and just throw a bat?
May 16, 2008
The Cardinals will make a roster move with Jason Isringhausen today, likely placing him on the DL or possibly designating him for assignment, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. The team has denied a physical ailment is the reason for his recent struggles, though club sources have indicated that the former closer has been receiving treatment for his arthritic left hip. Izzy has said he's willing to work his problems out in the minors, and he would almost surely clear waivers given his high salary. "I'm out of answers. I'm out of excuses," Isringhausen said. "We've just got to go to the next step, whatever that might be. I don't have any answers. I expect probably an answer tomorrow when I get here. We'll go from there."

Our View:Ryan Franklin should continue to close while Izzy is out, though Russ Springer could get some save chances, as well.
May 15, 2008
Jason Isringhausen picked up his sixth blown save of the season and fell to 1-5 after allowing four hits and three runs to the Pirates in the eighth inning on Thursday.

Our View:It's pretty ugly right now for Izzy. Those who picked up Ryan Franklin may be in for a few more saves than originally thought as Isringhausen seems pretty lost on the mound.
May 12, 2008
Cardinals deposed closer Jason Isringhausen pitched a scoreless eighth for St. Louis.

Our View:Isringhausen will work out his command issues before returning to the closer role. But rest assured the veteran will be the team's ninth inning option, sooner than later.
May 12, 2008
Jason Isringhausen, who was removed from his closer's role, threw about 20 pitches in the bullpen prior to Sunday's game against Milwaukee, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. He is trying to correct a flaw in his mechanics, which coaches believe began with how he throws his slider. The flaw caused Isringhausen to lose confidence in his cut fastball and his curveball, hence resulting in five blown saves.

Our View:Ryan Franklin and Russ Springer will share the closer's role temporarily until Isringhausen gets back on track. Isringhausen could still serve time in middle relief.
May 10, 2008
Updating a previous report, Jason Isringhausen has in fact been pulled from the closer's role in St. Louis, according to the AP. Manager Tony LaRussa made his decision and stated, "Jason's still prepared to pitch important innings, but for a while we’ll try to keep him out of the ninth inning. If we’re playing well, there’s still going to be games where you can’t cherry pick his situations because if we’re playing well, you need your bullpen."

Our View:Isringhausen has blown five saves, and holds a 1.72 WHIP. Isringhausen has recorded 11 saves however, and his replacement will have a chance to be productive, and hold solid fantasy value if effective. Ryan Franklin and Russ Springer are going to split the role for now.
May 10, 2008
Jason Isringhausen blew a save in Friday's 4-3 loss to Milwaukee, and he admitted that he needs a rest from the closer's role, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Isringhausen said, "I'm just getting sick of embarrassing myself and letting my team down. I remember in '06, I had an explanation. I just wasn't telling anybody. Now, I don't have an explanation. I'm just pitching like a second grader. My curveball is an out pitch. It's not a throw-for-a-strike pitch. It's just time for them to figure out, we should have five more games in the win column, in my mind. So we should be out there in first place even more. They can't keep sending me out there when I'm pitching the way I'm pitching. We're going to have to figure out some kind of remedy. I'm sure that remedy will give me some time off from that role and we'll get somebody in who can do a better job right now."

Our View:Isringhausen has blown five saves, and Manager Tony LaRussa said it is due to poor mechanics (and not a physical problem), and said he will decide what to do with Isringhausen today.
May 9, 2008
After getting two outs on two pitches, Jason Isringhausen imploded, allowing two singles and a walk before Rickie Weeks' two-run single gave Milwaukee a 4-3 victory on Friday night, giving Izzy a blown save and a loss.

Our View:Isringhausen, who has a major-league high five blown save chances to go along with his NL-best 11 saves, said it's time for him to sit down with Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak, manager Tony La Russa and pitching coach Dave Duncan and figure out what to do. The expected results of the meeting will likely keep Izzy from pitching on back-to-back days.
May 5, 2008
Jason Isringhausen pitched the ninth inning of St. Louis' 6-5 win over Colorado on Monday night for his 11th save in 14 chances. Once again his ninth inning work was an adventure as Izzy had to induce Garrett Atkins into a 5-4-3 double play after Helton drew a one-out walk.

Our View:Isringhausen's numbers are down right ugly. A 6.50 ERA and 1.39 WHIP don't trump his eleven saves, but they offer strong evidence that the right-handed veteran is nearing the end of his closing career.
April 30, 2008
Jason Isringhausen worked a scoreless ninth inning on Wednesday to pick up his ninth save of the season.

Our View:Izzy has an ERA of 6.00 and a WHIP of 1.33, but as long as he keeps racking up the saves there is no reason to panic with those peripherals.
April 22, 2008
Jason Isringhausen took a loss against the Brewers on Tuesday. The closer entered the contest in the bottom of the 12th inning and got one out before allowing a walk, stolen base, and game-winning single.

Our View:We're not really worried about Izzy, but it's not good to see him give up runs for the third time in his last four outings.
April 21, 2008
Jason Isringhausen picked up his seventh save of the season with a perfect ninth inning for the Cardinals.

Our View:The guy just keeps picking up saves with at least 32 in seven of the past eight seasons.
April 16, 2008
Jason Isringhausen allowed two runs on three hits on Wednesday night though he was able to hang on for his six save of the season.

Our View:Don't look now but the Cardinals are 11-4 thanks to six saves and a win by their closer.
April 12, 2008
Jason Isringhausen entered Saturday with five saves before blowing his first one of the year against the Giants as he allowed two runs in an inning of work.

Our View:As often happens in such situations, Isringhausen was still the pitcher of record when the Cardinals came back to take the lead which led to his first victory of the season.
April 7, 2008
Jason Isringhausen picked up his third save of the season on Sunday. The Cardinals right-hander was skipped in a save situation on Saturday, after pitching the ninth innings of Thursday and Friday's wins. Izzy gave up one hit in the ninth inning of Sunday's win, but after four games and four innings of work he has yet to allow a run.
March 23, 2008
Jason Isringhausen pitched a solid inning against Minnesota on Saturday, as he held the team hitless with one walk and one strikeout. The plan is to have him pitch three or four more times in the Cardinals' remaining exhibition games.
March 19, 2008
Jason Isringhausen pitched one inning against the Orioles on Wednesday and looked solid as he forced two ground-ball outs and a strikeout. He commented, "Everything went good, and that's all I can ask for. I worked on my pitches and didn't have any problem with my back." He added that he hopes to pitch five more times in the Cardinals' final 10 exhibition games, according to MLB.com.
March 18, 2008
Jason Isringhausen hopes to return to the mound on Wednesday after missing a schedule appearance Sunday due to a sore back, this according to Scout.com. Izzy said his back was improved Monday and didn't believe the injury would sideline him long.
March 17, 2008
Jason Isringhausen was a late scratch Sunday due to a stiff back, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. "Right now it's not a concern," pitching coach Dave Duncan said. "He'll step back. Spasm goes away, all will be OK." With any luck, Izzy will be back in the mix within a few days.
March 6, 2008
Jason Isringhausen picked up the win in his first appearance of the spring as he tossed one inning and allowed no baserunners. Despite injuries last year, Izzy still put up 32 saves and a 2.48 ERA despite being limited almost exclusively to one inning outings. Look for more of the same this year as Tony LaRussa certainly knows how to use his relievers.
March 1, 2008
Jason Isringhausen is working on adding a split-finger fastball and a hybrid spread-finger splitter to his arsenal of pitches, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. "He keeps adding a little something different with hitters," manager Tony La Russa said. "I think that's very important, especially for somebody who pitches late in the game. The old videotapes aren't going to tell the whole story in a particular year." Every little bit helps. Izzy picked up 32 saves and posted a 2.48 ERA and 1.07 WHIP last year.
February 16, 2008
Manager Tony La Russa said Jason Isringhausen would take a little extra time before pitching in Grapefruit League games, according to the team's official website. Izzy will be limited to batting practice sessions during the early portion of the spring schedule. The team's ninth inning option has plenty of wear and tear on his right arm and the skipper won't overwork his closer. With the Cardinals in rebuilding mode, Isringhausen shouldn't be counted on as one of the top fantasy options in '08.
