Isringhausen, returning from elbow surgery, plans to pitch in 2009, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports. "I'm sure I'm going to play," Isringhausen said. "I'm going to go through the rehab so that I can make that decision, but right now I plan on playing. We'll see how it goes from here."

Our View:Isringhausen is a pending free agent and still in search of his 300th career save. After this struggles this season, it would be surprising if someone relied on him to be a closer next season.

Jason Isringhausen will have surgery on his injured right elbow (partially torn tendon) next week, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Our View:He wants to pitch next season but it is a matter as to whether or not his body is able. His contract with the Cardinals expires after this season. The surgery will reportedly allow him to recover in time for spring training.
September 3, 2008
Jason Isringhausen has been transferred from the 15 to the 60-day DL, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. The team needed to make room on the roster for their wave of promotions from the minors, including pitcher Jason Motte.

Our View:Isringhausen was not coming back this season due to a torn tendon in his right elbow.

Reports out of St. Louis indicate closer Jason Isringhausen, recently diagnosed with a torn flexor muscle near his right elbow, is pondering his ability to complete the rehabilitation process and may be considering retirement from professional baseball, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Our View:On Tuesday, team medical supervisor Dr. George Paletta verified the diagnosis. Isringhausen spent Wednesday at home pondering whether he should seek surgery and try to rehab his way back to the major leagues or walk away from a big-league career.

Jason Isringhausen's injury is believed to be career-theatening, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. He has a torn flexor muscle near his right elbow. Team medical supervisor Dr. George Paletta confirmed the diagnosis to GM John Mozeliak Tuesday night after reading the results from a MRI of the elbow. The tear is located to the inside of Isringhausen’s elbow, and causes him problems gripping the ball and flexing his wrist. Rest was advised but surgery could eventually become necessary should Isringhausen want to extend his career.

Our View:He is the Cardinals' all-time leader with 217 saves. He has 293 saves overall for his career.
