Player Notes
March 20, 2010
Tim Wakefield was solid in five innings of spring action against the Orioles on Saturday, allowing no runs while walking two and striking out three.

Our View:He was much better than he was earlier in the week, and now finds his spring ERA at 3.29. After an injury-plagued second half to the 2009 season, he looks ready for 2010.
March 15, 2010
Tim Wakefield was shelled for five earned runs on nine hits over 3.2 innings in today's 8-4 loss to the Orioles in exhibition action. He had no walks and one strikeout.

Our View:This was the polar opposite of his previous outing, when he fired three scoreless innings against Florida. The 43-year-old old knuckle-baller should have at least one more quality campaign left in him, if he can stay healthy. He went 11-5 last season, but was limited to 21 starts due to injuries.

Tim Wakefield again looked great for the Red Sox, throwing three scoreless innings against the Marlins while allowing two hits and failing to issue a walk.

Our View:The Red Sox pitching staff looked great overall on Tuesday, giving up just seven hits (not one of which went for extra bases) and failing to issue a single walk in the shutout. As of now, Daisuke Matsuzaka and Clay Buchholz are the favorites to open as the No. 4 and 5 starters for Boston, though we wouldn't count Wakefield out just yet.
March 5, 2010
Tim Wakefield allowed just one hit in two innings of work against the Twins in Grapefruit League action on Friday.

Our View:The veteran knuckleballer also issued no walks. An encouraging beginning to the spring, no doubt.

Tim Wakefield was already throwing off a mound at Red Sox Spring Training on Thursday, according to ESPN's Gordon Edes.

Our View:It's obvious that the 43-year-old knuckleballer wants to prove that he is healthy, and for the moment, he most likely is. Just wait until July or August, however. He should not be drafted in mixed leagues.

Tim Wakefield plans on holding a spot in Boston's rotation for the upcoming campaign, according to CSNNE.com.

Our View:Wakefield noted that he feels great following offseason surgery to repair a herniated disc. This is encouraging news, but the knuckleballer will be 43 this season, and will be competing with John Lackey, Josh Beckett, Jon Lester, Daisuke Matsuzaka and Clay Buchholz for the five rotation spots.
