Raul Casanova was designated for assignment Monday to open a roster spot for Tim Birkins, who was claimed off waivers from Baltimore. Casanova hit .253 with six homers in 79 at-bats in 2007.

The Devil Rays designated Raul Casanova for assignment on Friday, according to the AP. He had a .250 batting average with six homers and 10 RBI in 21 games, but struggled defensively.

The Devil Rays purchased the contract of Raul Casanova from Triple-A Durham on Monday, according to the AP. Casanova hit .258 with three homers and 12 RBI in 29 games at Durham. He will serve as a backup for Tampa Bay.

Raul Casanova signed a minor-league deal with Tampa Bay Thursday, according to MLB.com. Casanova spent all his 2006 season in the minors. His last extensive stint in the majors was in 2001, when he hit .260 with 11 homers in 192 at-bats with Milwaukee.
